A leisurely Saturday afternoon in the park quickly mutated into a real-life horror scene when three pit bulls attacked a man and his German shepherd without warning, police said.
During the unprovoked attack, the man pulled out his concealed weapon and opened fire, hitting one of the pit bulls and scaring off the others.
"If I didn't have my gun - I'd be dead right now," he later told KOMO News.
"It was an instant decision. It's not something I wanted to do. I love animals."
Kirkland police Sgt. Rob Saloum said the violent drama unfolded Saturday as a local man was playing catch with his 3-year-old German shepherd across from Juanita Bay Park, in the 9700 block of NE Juanita Drive.
At the same time, another man was there with his three unleashed pit bulls.

At least he waited until the dogs committed to attack, unlike the cops who open fire at the sight of a dog, any dog... or cat, fish, hamster, pink lawn flamingo, backfiring car, each other...
I’m going to have to start carrying my pepper spray mace whenever I’m out walking. Can’t handle a gun; would shoot myself in the feet, even with taking a class and target practice. Does anyone know if pepper spray will affect dogs like it does humans?
Thank God he was armed and not afraid to use it.
>>LaValley acknowledged that the dogs were fighting, but said Lewis should not have opened fire.
“At no time whatsoever was his life in danger,” LaValley said<<
REALLY?! So when those pit bulls of yours attacked Lewis, they were playing frisbee?
It should work on dogs as well as humans.

Guess we’ll have to start calling her Phoebe Dugger. LOL
Speaking of pit bulls, whatever happened to chet99?
Mr. LaValley, welcome to your civil lawsuit! What a stupid, stupid thing to say to a reporter. Of course, only an idiot would allow 3 pit bulls to run around unleashed in public, so I guess I’m not surprised he said that.
When a pit snaps it needs significant negative persuasion to stop. Aim for the the eyes, snout, mouth, and ears. In that order. Should work...
The owner of the pit bulls, Justin LaValley, then took them away - and even shook Lewis' hand before leaving the scene. The injured pit bull was taken to a veterinarian for surgery and is expected to survive.
LaValley acknowledged that the dogs were fighting, but said Lewis should not have opened fire.
"At no time whatsoever was his life in danger," LaValley said.
To that I say, bunk. Shoot first and let God sort 'em out later.
I’d shoot all three pits to save my dog, then beat the crap out of the owner for having such dangerous animals loose in public.
A pack of angry pitbulls finally got their revenge.
Hell no it won’t stop a lone dog let alone 3.
Your neck or arm would be in that mouth before you could get the spray out.
Get bear spray. It’ll stop a charging bear. It’ll do havoc with anything smaller. It’s expensive, like around $30 but worth it.
It’s a shame he did not kill all three of them. Those dogs are a menace. A woman here in town was mauled and killed by one about a year or so ago. The pit “who never attacked anyone in its life”, even though there were several complaints lodged agaisnt the dog, basically tore the woman’s face clean off her skull. No open casket for her.
The dog was destroyed and there is a trial for manslaughter pending for the owners.
“LaValley acknowledged that the dogs were fighting, but said Lewis should not have opened fire.
At no time whatsoever was his life in danger, LaValley said”
So it would have been OK if he was just bitten or maimed then? Another idiot detached from reality.
It sounds like these Pit Bulls had a serious case of ball aggression.. Thank goodness the Shepherd and the man were not seriously injured.
This happened at a park.. I doubt any of the dogs were supposed to be off-lead.
At the off-lead dog park I go to, a small dog was killed by a Greyhound and a Lab had his stomach torn-up and both legs broken by a Pit.
No matter where you are with your dogs.. please be careful and observant as to what dogs are in the vicinity.
Trust you instincts in sizing up a dog and the dogs owner.
How about wasp spray? You could fill up their eyes mouth and nose when they were still 20 feet away.
>Id shoot all three pits to save my dog, then beat the crap out of the owner for having such dangerous animals loose in public.<
I would too. And sic the German Sheperd on this POS.
Someone call the UN; their bill granting animals the same rights as humans just got violated/sarc
I have a CCW and the pit bulls would have ALL been history on the first attack!
I'm with you there. As a cyclist I have had a few run-ins with mutts over the years. Any dog ever bites me, pit rotty whatever, he's dead. If I can't get to a firearm I figure to cut his heart out with my Mel Pardue. If the owner has a problem with that, we'll sort it out after I dispatch his mongrel.
Wasp spray is good too but bear spray reaches out thirty feet for almost thirty seconds. Wasp spray is good against people attackers and is cheaper than p-spray. (my dad, brothers and my uncle are all ex-military and know this stuff).

We used to take our maltipoo to the large dog park in Redmond. Now, we get out of the car and as soon as the dog gets in the first part of the park, he will go no further. Three times we tried. We don’t take him to dog parks at all any more.
Anybody have any Obama spray?
My husband insists I carry a can of wasp spray in my Tahoe. I pray that I will never have the need to use it, even for wasps.
"At no time whatsoever was his life in danger," LaValley said.
Justin needs to be brought up on charges. By the way, why were this guy's pit bulls unleased? Isn't there a lease law there?
I’m always wishing for the headline:
Pit Bull Owner Shot
Same here. But I back it up with my Beretta Tomcat pistol. My dad insists I carry it.
Anybody have any Obama spray?
Picked up by the SPCA?
Nope - but I bought some wine and drank it Obama self.
Ah, this guy is an obvious nitwit. He'll probably be charge with the attack. I'd give him an extra charge for being stupid.
Last year 2 of my now departed neighbors pits came down to our farm. I didn’t know it at the time but they killed one lamb, our female Great Pyrenees went after them. In the battle that ensued my girl got her muzzle cut some but our big male Pyrenees came and joined the battle. This is one big dog not to be messed with, he(Weighed in by our vet last week at 202lbs, all muscle) He snatched up one of the pits by the hind leg and literally tore the leg off. The other pit took off. My wife found the lamb a short while later but saw the whole fight. I hate these dogs to no end.
Bump and a Woof...
chet99 was banned. odd that someone would use a number mame and post the same things. hmmm.
Wow! I want to say more, but am a little too stunned. Just wow.
>>How about wasp spray? You could fill up their eyes mouth and nose when they were still 20 feet away.<<
That would be my choice after a .38.
I forgot to mention.. Trust your dogs instincts as well.. I would have given up after 3 attempts, too.. Maltipoos are generally brave.. Something must have been up for him/her to react that way.
There is a small dog area at the park I take my 10 month old Border Collie/Sheltie mix.. He usually tries to play with every dog there.. Except for two dogs he won’t go near..
Shooting a dog with a pistol, especially a small, concealable pistol, is a lot harder than most people think.
The dog is not a stationary target, it is moving all the time. Especially after you shoot the first one.
I have a pitbull.
You want to come shoot me?
When my husband was little, his babysitter was a chow named Buttons. Pit bulls with hair, he calls them. Buttons killed two prize Dobermans one morning, after their owner let them loose on her.
I love Great Pyrenees! Wish I could have one. I saw a dog out in Nevada, it was a Pyrenees, Yellow Lab cross. As big as a Pyrenees but it looked just like a Yellow Lab. I really though my eyes were playing tricks on me. The owner lived in a trailer, which made the dog look even bigger because of the small space.
Somewhere out there on the web, a man posted a video about ‘how to kill a pit bull that’s attacking you’. He noted, for example that common defensive moves - kicking at it etc. allow the dog to bleed you down pretty quickly (weaken you considerably with blood loss and flesh wounds) and those dog sparing measures generally do not work against the breed. He said one approach was to flip the dog and then ‘bounce on his chest’ to collapse his ribcage and everything else in the vicinity. That’s assuming the dog is on his hind legs biting you (suggests you may have to ‘allow it’ to grab you LEFT arm because you ARE going to get bitten unless armed) and you reach under and grab the dog’s right front leg (with your right hand) and pull down-across-up to roll the dog over onto his back - at which point you go knees down on his chest and...if you have to...bounce your weight.
Protties against the Catholics, Baptists vs the Calvinistas, Applejobs vs the Microsofties, chihuahasofties contra the pitbullies. Your FR on dopamine!
Three unleashed pit bulls in a park - what could possibly go wrong?
