Pastor: Mayor's statement an 'insult' to some
The Topeka Capital Journal ^ | April 27, 2011 | Tim Hrenchir

Pastor Ty Sweeting, of the Metropolitan Community Church, said Wednesday that a statement Bunten made about the importance of children being raised by a man and a woman who are married was an "insult" to single-parent households and blended families.....Bunten said of his statement: "The ideal situation is a man and a woman form a family to have a child and provide that child the values, the care and the love that they deserve — and I make no apology for it whatsoever."

This is in my local paper...and I never know if the AP has picked something up, so I did an excerpt.

Its an interesting story. The mayor made a fairly innocent statement about the importance of a traditional two parent household...and people are offended. In particular, the pastor of a church which caters to gays and transgender people is offended?!?!

There are comments after the article - some involve local stuff which won't make sense...but others are interesting. It is implied that this alleged 'church' really is just a political organizaton.

By the way, this mayor is probably in his 80's, is a Republican (but this is Kansas, think Bob Dole Republican), but has definitely NOT run on a 'family values' platform. He just comes from an older generation which views it as completely obvious that a traditional two parent household is preferred. He had no idea it would be a controversial statement; but, I am glad he is not backing down.

I am sure the Pharisees were insulted by some of the things Jesus said.

Pastor Ty Sweeting, of the Metropolitan Community Church....

"Metropolitan" is a name often used by "churches" with an "agenda", if you get my drift....

The people who take offense to this are the women who INTENTIONALLY bear children out of wedlock and remain unmarried (though bearing other children) while rearing their children.

THIS group is the most surly, ill-bred, irresponsible and ‘hooked on gov’t assistance’ crowd of dirty and loudmouth hoydens you will ever see. Go to any super market or store and see them in the check out with their children. (the kids are pathetic)

These women are clueless about nutrition, (just look at what they are feeding their kids), clueless about making a home (look at their DIRTY clothes and unkempt, unwashed children)...etc.

These women are a boat anchor on American society. Their kids are doomed to poverty, disease and ignorance. I say this because ONE child out of wedlock, I'll give you. But a lifestyle of irresponsible reproduction is inexcusable.

So, um, does this make research that shows a solid correlation between the rate of male incarceration and being raised in a household without a constant father figure being present during childhood also an ‘insult’?

I would bet that the “offended” man/pastor of the MCC is not merely a “pastor” but also, like most of his(former “her”?) gay involved in one of the “same sex couples” as are of his “church.”

I’m sure the research showing that children raised in single-parent households ALSO have, on average, lower educational achievement, lower lifetime earnings, and higher rates of substance abuse is also “offensive.”

Now, before the single parents here get mad at me, I know sometimes a spouse can become abusive, adulterous, criminal, and/or develop a substance abuse problem. In those cases, leaving the spouse may be necessary to raise the children in a stable and safe environment. I also know a couple of people who were careless about birth control when young and had one (yes, ONE) out of wedlock pregnancy, but went on to raise the child responsibly. And sometimes a parent is widowed while he/she is still raising children.

If these were the primary reasons for single parent households, I’d bet the statistics on children from single-parent households would be far closer to the statistics on children from intact households.

“a church which caters to gays and transgender people”

Chock full of demons.

So the “men” who go around impregnating multiple women are blameless in all of this, I suppose.

We had a hit movie where one of the main characters was named “Fat Bastard”. The word “bastard” is also a curse word, a reference to a person of ill temper and bad character. Yet, what is a “bastard”? By definition, a child born out of wedlock, and often without a father in their lives.

There is a reason we call bastards, “bastards”. Yet we cannot bring ourselves to be truthful in polite company.

We can laugh at a funny movie character, yet turn on a dime and call someone a “bastard”. We are not supposed to be consistent in the application of the word to all the millions of bastards in real life, many of whom will end up in jail because the circumstances of their birth deny them the training they need to fully function in society.

The solution to this problem is for young women to delay childbearing until their circumstances can support the proper raising of a child. But society is moving away from this standard at warp speed and over 70% of black children today are born to mothers who are not married and who do not have a stable male presence in the home. Other ethnic groups are not far behind.

No good will come from this. And I speak as someone whose wife has spent years working and volunteering in a charity devoted to helping these teen mothers trying to deal with being new mothers.

I attended a church service with my friend last year. The theme of the sermon was how the Bible tells us single parenthood is wonderful. He twisted Bible passages to have the opposite meaning in order to justify his lie. The lie was really a sales job. Turns out he was lying in order to attract single parents to his diminishing flock.

Divorce happens in our disposable, self centered society and so single parents can not always avoid or change that outcome. But no single parent I know would say that raising kids alone is ideal. Claiming the Bible promotes single parenthood or homosexuality is lying in the name of God.
