In an obvious attempt to keep the goofy issue alive a bit longer, President Obama finally released the long-form version of his birth certificate today.
Rather than simply post it on the White House website, Obama took six minutes of presidential time to visit the White House briefing room, where all the important media folks hang out waiting for their next important broadcast messenger assignment. Such a visit to such an important place by such an important person is guaranteed to attract maximum attention.
Of course, it worked. Would we be writing about this again without the president's appearance?
... If you've got something you want the media to desperately want, tell them they can't have it. High school cheerleaders know this law of human behavior instinctively.
The president says he really, really wants to be talking instead about the crucial, pressing and also the really important real issues facing this nation in the 21st century: national security, the budget, debt limit, energy (but not gas prices).
However, sigh, there's this bunch of, well, you know, different kind of fixated people distracted by something as trivial as whether he's legally qualified to be president of the United States, as he has been for the past 827 days.
And so, as most politicians or appointees claim when forced to do something, he's going to release this long-form birth certificate -- just to end the distraction, mind you.
Which, of course, he could have done 34 months ago when the distraction first began. But the release will keep it going for one more day. And make him look good, a key bipartisan goal of any politician. And keep people busy on that while he does something else.

I had some suspicion that he was using this as a “rope a dope”.
The birth certificate document released on the White House Web Site has alot of issues. Too many. I think the WH wants to keep this alive until the elections, discredit their opponents and just gave fresh meat for that.
But the document has already been resolved as fake, layered/edit PDF file.
No, the LA Times has been Faked Out! It's a Badly Done PDF Document File on the White House Website. The layers have not been synced into one "picture" within the PDF Document File.
A "Scanned In" picture would have No Layers. And this looks scanned in as if it had been from a binder, but the Layers are the key to it's veracity.

Where’s the foot print? I won’t believe it until I see the baby foot print and compare to the president’s footprint. I think this is a foot conspiracy!
Don’t be fooled that the LA Times has changed stripes in any way, still very left — but they do allow this blog on their website. “Top of the Ticket” appears in on-line opinion section of LA Times.
1. The threat of new laws in states requiring documentation in order for him to be on the ballot in 2012.
2. The upcoming hearing in the Ninth Circuit.
3. Continuing pressure from the citizen media.
4. Poll numbers.
What it really demonstrates is that he and all his supporters knew the COLB was NOT a BC, and they still persisted in saying that it was. They will not concede anything unless they are absolutely pummeled on it. It also demonstrates why Jan Brewer, John McCain, etc were wrong. An actual BC had not been shown, and those types of Republicans would let him get away with passing off a COLB.
I wonder if there will still be a push in state legislatures to pass law that will require all candidates to present a long form birth certificate in order to be placed on the state’s ballot?
So the guy spends millions and hires attorneys to keep this (and other documents) sealed, and NOW releases it. Um yeah. That makes perfect sense.
I don’t buy it. Everyone knew that a forged BC would be produced. Everyone! Duh! Why spend all that time and money to concel something like that if there wasn’t something to hide. And so today they release it.
Again, I don’t buy it.
But I guess we all need to drop it now as he’s provided “proof.”

I didn't see this. Does anyone know if he marched into the briefing room holding one of the copies he obtained?

Obama wants the birthers to go keep going further out on the limb before he cuts it off.
Where do you guys get the idea it is layered? I can open the PDF in Appel Preview, and Adobe PhotoShop, and it definitely is NOT layered. The PDF contains a single, non layered bitmap.
I doubt it.....
I take it back. I used the PDF extract tool, and it is indeed a layered file. My mistake!
