And now, a case of black and white that is anything but black and white.
A white congressman, Jim Moran of Alexandria, goes to pick up his kids at a recreation center where most of the children are black. Moran parks his Toyota Avalon and as he's getting out, he's approached by an 8-year-old boy, who is black. (The boy's parents don't mind if I use the child's name. I mind.)
The boy says something. That much everyone agrees on.
Moran says the boy said: "Give me your keys. I have a gun."
The boy says he said, "I like your car."
And we're off--downhill all the way. Moran grabs the boy, they tussle, the congressman ends up with his hand on the boy's throat. The boy's mother shows up at Cora Kelly Recreation Center and showers Moran with cusswords. Over the next two weeks come ugly accusations, threats of a lawsuit, accusations of racism--your classic post-O.J. slamdance of polarized perceptions.
Carjacker or car enthusiast? I spent a morning with the boy and his mother, Melanie Gaitwood. The boy showed me how he can watch traffic on Route 1 and name the make and model of every passing vehicle. The boy demonstrated how Moran yelled at him, held him at the throat (my neck still hurts) and carried him into the rec center, whereupon police were summoned.
This is a nice boy, the rec center director says. The boy's report cards are fine, no bad behavior noted. Gaitwood says her son would never do anything like what's alleged. "I know my child," she says. "He loves cars. He talks to people about cars all the time."
And yet.
Moran has no reason to make up this encounter. He's a liberal who's won broad black support for many years.

Choking an 8 year-old!
Your story speaks volumes, but so does this record: Jim Moran is now in his 20th year in Congress. Northern Virginia (government bureaucracy dependent to the core) keeps returning him to the House election after election.
Look up “term limits” in your dictionary and Jim Moran’s mug should be one of the pictures featured.
When the congressman is Jim Moran, it's not even a close call. Believe the kid.
Sheeeyit. No group of people hold blacks in lower esteem than Liberals.
The most vile racist couldn't have done more harm to blacks than Libs like Moran.
The shame of it all is that blacks fail to recognize it.
Just read this Rashomon-like rehash of this old story. It seems to me there are several reasons why Moran would make up this story:
1. All black kids look alike to him and he choked the wrong kid.
2. Like all phoney libs, he loves black people in general but hates them in particular.
3. He was drunk as usual and overreacted.
4. Like most libs, he’s a coward and positively lives in fear of 8 years olds.
5. Like all libs, if he’s moving his lips - he’s lying.
And this is a perfect example of what has run off the rails in this country. It doesn't matter to me which side in this story is telling the truth. I don't care. But I've seen way too many instances of “I'm a congressman..sit down and shut up.”.
I'm sick and tired of these buffoons behaving like they are somehow anointed royalty. I would have cheered had that soldier punched him in the nose after being told to sit down and shut up, and to be honest, I feel like doing that myself every time I see Schumer or any number of DemonRATS spewing their lies and smirking.
No mention of his party affiliation. Just the “liberal” buzzword towards the end.
I wouldn't put it past an 8 yo to make a comment like Moran alleges but who would take it seriously? It sounds like the congressman was "punked" by a smart-ass kid and freaked out. It isn't far afield from the things I've heard out of the mouths of kids in recent years. Maybe the area is high crime, making it more plausible the kid could be packing as a gang recruit.
If it wasn't "a liberal who's won broad black support for many years," the guy would be in prison. The ensuring racial firestorm would ensure a guilty verdict whatever the facts on the ground.
I think the kid threatened Moran and Moran over-reacted.
I missed that! That's insane. Many of these "anointed royalty" moments seems to involve Democrats. I'm sure there must be one involving a Republican I just have no memory of any.
Bobby Etheridge fell for much less "cause." Moran has a history of extremist rhetoric and, shall we say, "personal" anger management problems.
This is, in every way, equal to being caught "in bed, with a live boy or a dead girl."
And yet, in Etheridge's case, back home the congressional district he had repeatedly been re-elected to represent in Congress had changed demographically, the national backlash to Obama driving the 2010 election results favored Republicans, and his competition was managed to strike a responsive chord and to obtain equal name recognition.
This is despite a monolithic press mouthpiece favoring the self-referential Democrat socialist elites.
Moran has gone over the line, and if American civilization were healthy and its people mostly self-confident, he would already have been shamed into resignation. But our civilization is eroded, particularly among the frightened government employed or dependent mob in and around the district he represents.
My response is not to change minds in his district but to look to minds and conditions in the district where I live, hoping (and working to see) no one as unbalanced as he ever even gets elected in the first place.
As it is, if his supporters are so weak and fearful that they can't confidently replace him with a more friendly face, let this creep be the face they choose to represent them.
Moran should pick on a child his own size.

Apparently problems in managing adult beverages as well.
This is Virginia. As long as he didn’t call the kid Macaca, his job is safe.
Just like John Kerry’s “Don’t you know who I am?” when pushing his way to the front of store lines.
I would venture a guess that #3 is the controlling factor.
I can just imagine if the kid was wearing a yarmulke.
Anybody else would have laughed it off.
But not a nasty, drunken ‘rat like Moran.
Plus Moran had tough competition to keep up with in the party of Teddy Kennedy and Chris Dodd.

The libs are the most color-struck people on earth.
Their whole trick is identity politics and they exploit it SHAMELESSLY.
