Haven’t followed the series very closely. Why is Merlin so attached to these royals who treat him so cruddy?

Has been told his fate is tied to theirs. Specifically to Arthur’s fate.

But with the death of King Daddy Uther in last seasons finale, who was totally against magic, and had made it a death penalty, things will likely change now. They may be only paying lip service to the original story line, but eventually, Merlin will be outed, and nobody will be treating him “cruddy” after that, I expect.

During the great withdrawal from ESSEX, et al (which Arthur had foolishly signed over to the Saxons) Merlin went to Brittany. In those days it was a much larger principality and included the coast of Normandy and that peninsula.

The grapes were all dead. There were no animals or people in that region. It was barren. Merlin moved SE to the headwaters of the Rhone and planted grapes in a more climatologically welcoming regions ~ Beaujolais!

He stayed there a while, then withdraw back to the West and replanted the grapes there.

All of this is covered in the Annals of the Kings of Britain as well as the Arthurian folios preserved in Eastern France (which show Merlin much more important than Arthur).

(NOTE: I used modern English names for these people and places. Myrrdhin and Ad are probably more correct ~ but my favorite part is where Myrrdhin seals Ad in a cave and lets him rot. So much for giving away land to the Saxons).

Season 3 was pretty good - you’ll enjoy it.

I see SyFy is doing a US version of ‘Being Human’ - I really like the UK version - hope they don’t mess too much with it.

“Orlando Furioso” is the literary work referred to. Merlin is substantially more important; in fact Arthur is barely mentioned. The story centers on Orlando. One part that was interesting was that Merlin foresaw that Excaliber would be broken and had the Lady of the Lake forge 2 copies, the second to replace the one that would break.

I enjoyed the first season of BH. It had a good balance of humor and drama. The second season was too dark and didn't have much humor until about episode 4 or 5, and then went dark again.

It will be interesting to see the US version.

How many seasons has there been? I watched it until NBC pulled it in the middle of the first season. Never knew someone else picked it up?

2 seasons. When NBC stopped airing it after the first season, it’s sister channel, SyFy, began airing it with its second season. Which is a shame in the sense that SyFi iosn’t very good about streamimg even the 3 most recent episiodes. So. if you miss it on their cable/Sat channel, and it’s repeat, you’ve were out of lick going to their website to watch it streaming.
