French hunters urged to declare war on the boar
BBC ^ | December 23, 2010 | Hugh Schofield

Wild boars roam the oak forests and shrublands of Europe, Asia and north Africa. These large, bristly haired pigs are the ancestors of our farmyard pigs which have been domesticated for thousands of years. Their four, continually growing tusks are kept sharp for fighting off other males during the breeding season. Injuries inflicted can be severe, especially after a powerful charge.

French farmers and forestry experts are at a loss to explain a dramatic rise in the numbers of wild boar, apparently linked to increased fertility among the female animals.

Last winter, hunters across the country killed a record 560,000 boar - 10 times more than they were shooting 30 years ago.

But the population is easily replacing itself, and now stands at well over a million.

The problem is not just that the animals cause severe damage to crops and meadowland.

They are also beginning to encroach on areas inhabited by humans. Omnivorous, adaptable and highly mobile, wild boar have been increasingly spotted in town streets and gardens in recent years.

In 2009, they were responsible for nearly 21,000 road accidents across the country. Neighbouring countries including Germany and Italy reported similar problems. Now it is up to the hunters to keep the wild boar population under control

If they’re under 70 or 80 kilos, they’re pretty tasty. Over that they’re used for sausage. I was invited on a boar (called cinghiale in Italy) hunt in the province of Tuscany in 1995. Since I had not purchased a hunting license, I could not actually hunt but was part of a large group of spotters (the hunt seems more social occasion for the landed gentry and their urban friends than a hog hunt in the US).

They serve wild boar (and other game meats) in German restaurants that specialize in taking in and cooking what the jaegers (hunters) bring in. Those little tuskers are delicious.

Those are lap pigs. Parisian ladies keep them as pets.

This is a boar.

An 11 y.o. kid in Alabama killed it with a pistol. 1051 lbs, 9.5 feet long..

That's 477 kg for you lap pig loving, cheese eating, Jerry Lewis worshiping....

"They taste a lot like cat"

I ate cat for the first time (I think) just this past summer. I was gifted some lynx.

In the future, I'll be re-gifting the lynx. Too much hair in with the meat.

They taste like breakfast sausage. Texas has a problem with them too. I don't pay for pork anymore. It's even legal to spotlight them, no license required.

You could substitute mohammedans for boars and get the same discription. They are also beginning to encroach on areas inhabited by humans.

So the boars are multiplying like Muslims in Europe, and the Muslims are multiplying like boars in Europe.

They both hate each other.

Looks like a cultural collision is inevitable.
