The New York Yankees this year had a payroll of $206 million. The San Diego Padres had a payroll of $37 million and neither team won its division.
So who had the better year?
I think it was Paul McCartney who once said, I dont care too much for money cause money cant buy you a World Series championship, although it can pretty consistently get you into the playoffs.
Hes right.
Lance Berkman is making $14.5 million this year. Thats more than the combined salaries of the Indians entire starting lineup in their last game of the season and Berkman Thursday night was the No.8 hitter in the Yankees lineup. Not their cleanup hitter. Number eight.
Kerry Wood, a mere setup guy in the Yankees bullpen, is making $10.5 million.

I also enjoyed the Braves whooping the Jints’ arses last night, but if they don’t do the job the Phillies will.
You Yankee hater guys sound a lot like race-hatin’, class-warfare Democrats. Poor little baby boys. Live with it. The Yankees have won more world titles than your pathetic little teams. Especially, the Bah-stun Red Sox. And there’s nothing you can do to change the facts, high payroll, great players and all. (Though I will agree with you about Jeter.)
Read the article; it’s about more than the Wankers. He encompasses the current post-season, all the teams. And holler all you like, you can’t stop the whole country from hating the Wankers. LOL!!!
Ditto that!
Ping of interest...
The Yankees spend much more money that every other team. They should win the World Series every year. The fact that they don’t shows that they are mismanaged.
(If you value your life).
MLB umpires also help the Skankies win by having one strike zone for them and a different strike zone for everyone else.
See this story below about how awful Hunter Wendelstedt was behind the plate in the Twins-Yanks ALDS game.

The umpiring is so bad this year that MLB management, players and umpires will have a summit on the state of umpiring on Dec. 3 just ahead of the start of the winter meetings.

How about that extra out the refs gave the Twins in the 9th in game 1?
Quit your whining. The Yanks are the gold standard of sports teams. Just ask the Mets how hard it is to win even with a big payroll.
I’m from Boston, and I don’t say ‘Bah-stun’.
(And I’ll take a losing Mets season than a winning Yankee one.)
How about “JETER IS A CHEATER!!!”
:-)
They are called UMPIREs not REFs. This mistake tells me that you are a casual MLB fan. Just a typical Skankee fan that does not know much about the MLB outside of the Northeastern region.
How much do the Skankies pay umpires to call a one-sided game? The biased umpiring in favor of the Skankies has been going on for years. Ask any fan of an AL team west of the Mississippi River. It’s time for MLB umpires to call games fairly no matter who is playing.
Do people who live in the Bronx ever go to a Yankees game? That’s one of the poorest neighborhoods in America, with the luxurious new Yankee Stadium tickets out of reach of those people.
I understand Yankees caps have been adopted as the cap of choice of certain youth gangs. Though the gangs aren’t necessarily Yankee fans, or even know who plays for the Yankees.
“The Yanks are the gold standard of sports teams.”
Oh really?
Manchester United,Arsenal,Barcelona, Real Madrid aren’t sports teams?
Methinks you have a bit of Yankee fan arrogance.
Reminds me of when Obama said he was such a big White Sox fan. But he couldn’t name a favorite player. And he said how he used to go to games at “COMINSKY PARK”, as he pronounced it with an “N” in it. Any real baseball fan knows it was “COMISKEY PARK” with no “N” in it. So Obama isn’t really a big fan, just as this other person who called a baseball umpire a “REF” as in referee clearly doesn’t follow baseball so closely.
So, they should be hated and punished for being successful? Sounds like resentment against achievement and hatred of the good for being the good. Baseball needs to accept the libtard idea that force must be used to promote equality of results. Runs need to be taken away from the Yankees and the other successful teams and redistributed to the other loser teams, so that every team can have a guaranteed win-loss record above some minimum amount. Not
ESPN is saying that Linecum’s two-hitter was more impressive that Halladay’s no-hitter? LOLOLOL
wideawake,
I do not think you nor I nor anyone could effectively “manage” the circus of prima donna’s that is the N.Y. Yankees.
Only thing one can say is at least they get the job done for the money spent,,,,, unlike say the METS,
Bleacher seats are $ 14 at Yankee Stadium. Yes many locals come to Yankee games, as well as families from the suburbs, and rich Manhattan celebrities.
It is quite a mixed crowd. LOL
Methinks the Yankees are appraised at being worth 2 billion dollars. They’ve won 27 championships. So unless the teams you cited can claim both, the Yankees ARE the gold standard of sport.
Normally am all for capitalism but I hate the Yankees too. So it was kinda sweet when the low payroll Marlins, including future Red Sox Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell, beat em in 03
WS. (Clemens was tanned rested and ready for a game 7
that never came). Call it, efficient use of capital

Never mind. :-)
For Red Sox fans, the Yankees seem like the MA Democrat
party: feeling of entitlement, always winning (well ALMOST always). When Red Sox Nation was spoken of, the pinstripes responded with Yankees Universe.
Right now am watching a playoff game—if Rangers win tonight
and Yankees follow suit you’ll have a team formerly owned
by George W. Bush playing against a team Sox fans regard as
“the Evil Empire” (and for those in Chicago, yes I know
there’s also the WHITE Sox but I’m so used to just using
“Sox” to refer to Red Sox...)
Rangers vs. Yankees would be a great series...Rays - Yankees..? Rerun.
Where did you get that 2 billion dollar figure?
Not doubting it,just curious.
Read it in a sports column last year or the year before, and I’ve heard it mentioned on sports talk shows here in New York.
Thanks.
That said, may the best team win. :-)
Just found this—
And now I will drop the subject.
“Darn right they...oh, wait...you’re talking baseball.
Never mind. :-)”
Heh heh heh ...
Since a person north of the Mason Dixon line is a Yankee. Then would a Philadelphia fan be autophobia ?
New York Yankees were originally the Baltimore Orioles until 1903. The team relocated to NYC from Baltimore, and were known as the Greater New York Americans. They were also known as the Greater New York Highlanders, then New York Highlanders, then New York Yankees.
Yankees are the most successful sports franchise in sporting history.
AL Pennants 40
Eastern Division Pennants 16
Wild card berths 4
Total World Series 40
Total won 27
Total lost 13
Winning pct .675
1998 Yankees own the MLB single season winning record of 125-50 (including sweeping the Rangers and Padres)
Let the baseless hating commence.
And who was the greatest Yankee of them all? Well, he hit the first home run in Yankee Stadium. He hit the first All-Star game home run. He was the first to hit one clear out of Comisky’s double decker stands in right. At the age of forty he was the first to clear the double decker stands at Forbes Field (a 500 footer). He also hit more home runs in one season than any other team in the American League. And by the bye, he holds the AL record for shutouts by a lefty in a season (shared with Ron Guidry). And he also stole home more times than Lou Brock. Why it sounds like the Bazoo of Bang himself, George Herman “Babe” Ruth.
Watched the Rays Rangers game and the playcall from the plate umpire was bad. The calls have been bad for the entire contest. I also remember the horrible calls in the Angels A’s game last year.
Didn’t notice the Yankees playing any of those games.
Love the Yankees! I think it would be great to have them meet the Braves in the World Series.
Babe Ruth’ performance enhancing drugs of choice were steaks, eggs, bacon, bread, potatoes, alcohol, and enormous quantities of “Tang”
Turn out the lights, Twins.
Also held the record for scoreless innings pitched in a World Series [29] until it was broken by Whitey Ford - another Yankee.
I call them refs for shorthand—I realize they are umpires.
I really feel bad for you Yankee haters. You have to resort to blaming the “refs”. Why not blame your ownership, who refuses to lay out the kind of cash required to get the top talent and compete with the Yankees?
Of course, the loser Yankee-hater will say that the Yanks can do that because they make so much money, without even realizing that when George Steinbrenner bought the team from CBS in the 70s, they were LOSING money. The Boss turned it around by putting a top flight product on the field, they started winning again, and now they are a dominant franchise.
It’s ok, go ahead and blame the “refs” again. Then pretend not to notice when your owner refuses to spend big money in the offseason while raising ticket prices for those home games when the Yankees are in town.
Boo hoo.
C’mon. Those teams are great teams with great traditions, but not comparable to the New York Yankees.
Good catches, both of you.
Lincecum is the guy we want to see get back to cruisin’ the Castro asap.
