My wife and I have watched it at least 20 times on DVD.
Love that movie.
Huh? There were gunfights, etc. in movies long before CGI. Plenty of special effects, photography, editing and writing methods to show what you want to show--as in Psycho, where the knife never actually touches the body, but the impact is immense.
But I am an 'older guy' as well and frankly I think special effects has come a very, very long way in the past 50 years.
Who argued otherwise? It doesn't mean that 'elaborate' is the same as 'believable' though.
Remember the first version of 'The Day the Earth Stood Still'? It was incredibly cheesy but a great story. Somehow in the re-make they managed to move light-years ahead in effects, but completely blew the story. So the first one is still better.
The first one is perhaps the most overrated movie I've ever seen. "Be nice or we'll kill you." No thanks.
Don't focus on the special effects so much.
I'm a writer, and have had some short material filmed, so please don't lecture me. I can talk about special effects if I feel like it, and why do you have such a problem when I am focusing on effects as the PROBLEM with storytelling these days? I focus on them in this thread because they are HURTING storytelling, That okay with you?
It's called suspension of disbelief and if you practice it and there is a good story, it will be much more enjoyable than trying to pick the tech side apart. IMHO.
How about you talk about what you want to talk about, and I'll talk about what I talk about, 'kay? ;)
My BIGGEST peeve these days--the men look like boys.
Have not seen “To Live and Die in L.A.” for AGES. Will have to see that one again.
Like the MST quote. I agree.
Well, yes, the Matrix movies did have more than just THAT as a problem; but what was so spectacular in the first movie (the physics defying fight scenes) was just stupid in the third movie (but THIS time I will hit him really really REALLY hard.... to no ill effect).
Will be on the alert for choir on soundtracks! Usually I don't notice the soundtracks at all, unless they are really bad and/or really overdone. I try to let it do to me what they want it to do to me, pull my emotional strings. If I am cognizant of it... it doesn't work!
“second coming of Audrey Hepburn”
Absolutely not. Audrey is an icon.
Ann is cute and has charm, but she is not magnetic like Audrey Hepburn.
Plus Audrey could dance.
Bourne Identity had a pretty good car chase scene.
But otherwise, I agree with you that the tend to be overdone.
Don’t forget Sabrina.
Audrey could charm anyone.
Instead of telling Michael Bay "Sorry, I am severely injured and in a tremendous amount of pain, your going to have to scrap the movie because I have lost a finger and had several others crushed." Shia quickly went through several very painful operations in order to salvage the film, had a special cast made to immobilize the hand as best that it could and then he went right back to work and did some amazingly physical work and stunts in order to complete the film. = Most of the work he did on the film from the point in the story where they are transported to Egypt and he supposedly injures himself when he lands (and they wrap his left hand), throughout the rest of the film he did while severely injured! He did all of this without complaining or feeling sorry for himself.
No matter what you may think of the film, just take the time to watch Transformers 2 and all of the physically demanding work he does while injured and you can't help but have respect for the guy, I know I do.
“We have 60 minutes worth of plot and dialog and a 90 minute movie! Put in two 15 minute car chases. Done.”
Can anybody name a chase scene where an incident during the chase was instrumental to the plot? Or are they ALL just ‘filler’?
You may be surprised to learn that there were a lot of good movies made pre-1980.
Watch TCM sometime. You will be amazed at how good movies used to be.
Say what you will but I have a lot of respect for Shia LaBeouf’s work ethic. The guy has a lot of guts. After getting T boned in his truck halfway through the filming of Transformers 2, and having several of the fingers on his left hand SHREDED when the truck rolled over on its side and caught his left hand under the trucks driver side door and the street, with the weight of the truck on it and then having the truck pushed sideways turning his hand into hamburger (I shudder just thinking about it), instead of telling Michael Bay “Sorry, your going to have to scrap the movie because I have lost a finger and had several others crushed.” Shia quickly went through several very painful operations, had a special cast made to immobilize the hand as best that it could and then he went right back to work and did some amazingly physical work and stunts in order to complete the film. = Most of the work he did on the film from the point in the film where they are transported to Egypt and he supposedly injures himself when he lands throughout the rest of the film he did while severely injured. No matter what you may think of the film just take the time to watch Transformers 2 and all the physical work he does while injured and you cant help but have respect for the guy.
He did all of this without complining or feeling sorry for himself.
” Shia LaBeouf topped a Forbes.com list of Hollywood’s Best Actors for the Buck with women claiming five of the top 10 spots compared to zero last year”
Oh, so Zero is an actor now?
I love all her movies. I just wanted to suggest three of my essential favorites for a noob. How is it someone can go thorough life not knowing about Audrey Hepburn???? (Even my wife understands my love for her. :0)
hahaha. How about this statement:
Because men typically earn less than women in Hollywood, they make up a full half of the top 10 list.
How dumb can they be?
anne hathaway had one of those “special girlfriends”
Bride wars as promoted (disclosure: never saw it by choice) seemed to be a subliminat two women getting married movie.
As for alice in wonderland, you could have totally ommitted her part and not changed the movie.
My wife and I are big Audrey fans. She was one of a kind.
We just watched a biopic on her. Jennifer Love Hewitt played Audrey and did a surprisingly good job.
Then we watched Funny Face. Love the Beatnik dance scene.
How about Duel?
I agree on Shia. He is very talented, and seems to be a professional.
She looks great in a black turtleneck, no? Great pic.
What happened that was instrumental to the plot? Haven't seen that movie in AGES!
