A Saudi man convicted of paralysing a fellow countryman in a cleaver attack is being threatened with having his spinal cord cut in a tit-for-tat punishment.
The ultra-conservative desert Kingdom enforces Islamic law and on rare occasions metes out punishments based on the ancient code of an ‘eye-for-an-eye’.
The case judge in the northwestern province of Tabuk has sent letters to several hospitals seeking their advice on whether it is medically possible to render the attacker’s spinal cord non-functional, local newspapers said.

An eye for an eye. I guess they take their justice seriously. I’d like to see somebody compare their crime statistics against ours. Anyone care to guess which is lower?

Would a licensed surgeon actually perform such an operation? I guess the Hypocratic oath doesn’t apply in Saudi Arabia.
You just gotta love our system of justice. Guy rapes and murders a whole family, gets the death sentence, 25 years later they lead him off to a nice clean room, give him a great meal, let him say goodbye to his Mommie, then give him a nice clean injection. Yep, great deterrent.
I'd guess theirs. Not only are their punishments severe; there's a whole class of approved victims (women and dhimmis) to work out your aggression on in an approved fashion.

That article says that the local hospitals are unwilling to perform this kind of operation. Mosty probably the staff is trained in the West :).

Licensed MDs in this country perform abortions;seems like a pretty small step to me, from dismembering a child in the womb to intentionally paralyzing an adult. Hopefully we aren’t getting a glimpse of our future here!
The left likes to suggest that the (right) ‘wingers have a lot in common with the extremist Taliban and muzzies. Some of the comments on this thread would go a long way toward support of that contention.

Yup, words mean things.
You realize they against even this clean death the convicted ones fight to the bitter end through endless appeals.
An Islamist (as you will find in the Saudi theocratic government) supports discrimination against non-muslims under the law (fewer rights under the law and harsher sentencing for crimes committed against muslims).
You will have to keep stretching to try to make the point that anyone on FR is an “Islamist” but it is very easy to point out that Saudi Arabia is an Islamist kingdom. Nothing “conservative” about it.
