Fairfield, Ill. — A tip from the public has led to the arrest of a Fairfield Community High School physical education teacher on charges she had unlawful sexual contact with a student.
Haven A. Kirkpatrick, 29 of Fairfield, faces eight counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse - each a Class 2 felony. If convicted, she faces the possibility of between three and seven years in prison on each count.
Kirkpatrick was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon at the home of her parents in Carmi and lodged in the City-County Jail pending transfer to Wayne County. Judge Timothy Neubauer of Jefferson County set her bond at $10,000 cash; she posted that and has been freed pending further proceedings.
The arrest of Kirkpatrick follows a fairly brief but intense investigation carried out by Illinois State Police Special Agent Rick White, Fairfield City Police, the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services and the Wayne County Sheriff's Department. Kirkpatrick is accused of having illicit sexual contact with a FCHS student between the ages of 13 and 17.
In each of the charges, Kirkpatrick is accused of holding a position of authority as a high school teacher over the alleged victim, who was at least 13 years of age but under the age of 18. In each of the eight counts, Kirkpatrick is accused of having unlawful sexual contact with the victim "for the purpose of ... sexual gratification." The alleged contacts took place, investigators said, as recently as July 2 and as early as May 18 of this year.
The charges were filed Wednesday morning by Edwards County State's Attorney Michael Valentine, who was appointed special prosecutor in the case because of a conflict of interest concerning Wayne County State's Attorney David M. Williams. "I intend to move forward vigorously with the prosecution of this case," Valentine said. "The cooperation between investigating agencies in developing this case was phenomenal."
A native of Carmi, Kirkpatrick is a tenured teacher at FCHS. She was hired in 2006 to teach girls' PE, health and driver's education. In January of 2009, she was named assistant girls' track coach. She also served as the girls' JV basketball coach, a position she resigned from at the end of the most recent school year.
Prior to coming to Fairfield, Kirkpatrick was a teacher at a high school in Gallatin County. In 2007, she was convicted in Edwards County of permitting a DUI to occur for allowing an intoxicated individual to drive her vehicle. After pleading guilty, she was placed on three months of court supervision, ordered to take driver's education classes and ordered to pay $152 in fines and court costs.
FCHS Superintendent David Savage was out of town on Wednesday and unavailable for comment on the arrest.

Interestingly enough, according to the school's website she is also the driving instructor. Do you supposed she qualified to teach the class after following the judge's orders?
