Santa Clara voters OK 49ers stadium

Santa Clara voters Tuesday approved Measure J, the San Francisco 49ers' plan to build a $937 million stadium in their community.

The measure took a strong early lead, and although results from the city's precincts were coming in slowly, the crush of mail ballots that was reported minutes after the polls closed was enough for the victory.

Santa Clara officials and several hundred stadium supporters packed into an American Legion hall to celebrate the anticipated passage of Measure J. While precinct results were slow to arrive, the stadium supporters exuded confidence. By 9:30 p.m., the pro-Measure J leaders already were handing out awards and congratulating each other for a measure well won.

Opponents of the stadium could only watch the results and hope for an upset that never came.

"We did everything we could possibly do, and all we can do now is wait," said Bill Bailey, a leader of the effort to block construction of the new home for the NFL club.

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom has argued that Santa Clara's stadium election does not guarantee that the 49ers will leave the city, which will move ahead with plans for a new stadium site as part of the Hunters Point Shipyard redevelopment project.

Good bye old stadium.

Hello, Goldman Sachs field.

Or, maybe they’ll call it the Pelosi Bowl?

The taxpayers will be sorry.

They should come to Pittsburgh and see what a new baseball stadium has done for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Are these voters idiots? Or are they convinced that at some point, the federal government (ie, taxpayers) will wind up bailing out California and all its municipalities because California is “too big to fail”. It’s kind of like Obama promising to bail out anyone with credit card debt over $50,000 as of December 2010, and then being surprised at personal credit card use between now and November.

This is terrible. Of course, this doesn’t mean it will actually go through. Voters approved a stadium in San Francisco back in ‘97 or ‘98.

I don’t know what was done to persuade voters to go for this. I remember when both new stadiums (baseball and football) were built here in Pittsburgh. The mayor of Pittsburgh at the time declared that it won’t cost the citizens anything because most of the money would come from the state. He didn’t mention that the state’s contribution would come from — gasp! — the taxpayers.

And of course, we were told that a new baseball stadium would make the Pirates competitive. Well, the Pirates are now in the cellar and have been since the stadium was built. Guess the new stadium didn’t work out for them.

I wish I was a billionaire 49’ers NFL team franchise owner, because then I could get Bay Area dumbasses to build a shiny new stadium for my shitty team while I claimed all the tax credits, raised beer prices to $11.75 a cup, and sold the fans $7.25 hotdogs that are older and have more wrinkles than Harry Reid’s scrotum-inspired face.

Well, the syphilis of their fans will be Santa Clara’s problem. Good luck, Santa Clara.

Sigh.

CA voters played a perfect game last night - 27 batters, 27 strikeouts.

I am not sure this stadium will ever really happen, but traffic will be terrible and parking will be worse.

Well, so much for me being able to get off the 101 to go to church (Our Lady of Peace) on the same exit as this boondoggle - if it comes to pass.

BTW, the reason the Santa Clara voters went for it is that the backers “guaranteed” that there was no financial risk to the taxpayers - only UPSIDE! :-/

How are they going to pay for it, when the entire state is going broke, and Santa Clara is running massive deficits?
