Think of how contact with Greek and other artifacts inspired architecture, fashion, writing, philosophy and culture in the larger world. Theses bits of stone, clay etc. were Ambassadors. Would these cultures have had as great an influence if these things had remained in the dirt where they were found? Perhaps - but I doubt it.
And the way things are going - unrestricted immigration - more of the descendants who created them will be living here anyway.
Just saying...but seriously give them back.
Oh no they don’t. Whatever we got out of mich...er...that old ciry is ours. Finders keepers, and everybody else sucks. If they argue the point farther, we’ll just threaten to sent over a platoon or two of Marines to turn their country into a parking lot.
Because the Greeks had, and have no appreciation of anything from which they cannon derive immediate profit. Sure, let’s just stick them back on a dirty, disheveled tourist trap of a once great site and let the wonderful Athens air degrade them.
To say nothing of the stray dogs and cats using them as a toilet.
When the Greek economic crisis hit, I was wondering if Greece was going to push the Brits for a bailout as an exchange for the Elgin Marbles. I am only half-joking here.
