Maybe you can do what I’m doing, as it will feed your need for marketing (but it depends on your region). I started this in January and it’s really taken off!

1. Find an area company who provides internet radio broadcasting - to start your own internet radio show as producer/co-host.
2. Buy an hour of time per week for a show. Negotiate a starting rate of free or $100/per.
3. Post an ad or call to recruit an expert in any business field you are interested in to host the show. They don’t need any experience in radio, just need conversation skills and ability to interview others (I.e. “Asking questions”)
4. Sell as many radio ads as station will give you.
5. Charge guests to come on your show. You are selling PR!

If you want more details, I can help you if you email me. Very easy to do, marketing wise. See RSuccessRadio dot com as example. I started with nothing and have not paid a penny and I only have 4 sponsors (only cuz I’m not marketing it every week!). Trying for 18 to fill inventory.

You didn't say the size of the town you live in or if you are fit or not. My advice is to sell your labor while you are young. There is a labor shortage in most places but the smallest towns. A reasonable sized town always needs yard work, trash hauling, and other "work" others don't seem to want to do. My dad always said to figure out what others won't do and you volunteer and charge the crap out of them. It got me a plumbers helper job doing sewer work mostly and a chance to get my Journeyman's license by the Master plumber. I made as much as the Journeyman because he didn't want to do it anymore and the Master was giving me a free education and said he would make sure I got my license from Austin. The Army got me, so it was messed up when I got back and he hired someone else, but the principle still works. One of the richest men in Houston right now started with 2 pickups and a few illegal aliens hauling toxic waste. No one else wanted to do it. He now runs an billion dollar plus business on the NYSE. When your young, sell your labor. Another plus is working weekends and long hours. Most kids today think a job should be 9-5 M-F. When you are older, sell your brain.

Just as an example, right now, I need my water line dug up to fix a leak, I need my patio re roofed, I need to clear a ditch of brush for a couple hundred feet, I have 2 vehicles to fix, my garage needs cleaned( about a 2 day job of heavy lifting), and my front lawn by the street needs the brush cleaned about 15 feet deep by 200 feet long. I plan to have it all done by June, but would pay for some of it if I could find someone that would work and finish the job without whining about how they had to leave because their back hurts. I'm almost 59 and can usually work circles around 20 somethings. Labor is what you have to sell right now and if you sell it as a bagger at the local market, you won't get gas money. Working for someone else is slow death. Work for yourself, set the rates as you see fit.

Wonderful advice. God bless you and know that you will be doing the work that you are fully passionate about - soon!

What a tremendously helpful thread! Will pass along to a few people who need this info.

God bless all who are looking for work.

My only recommendation is to totally ignore the claims that the economy is bad, or that jobs are hard to find, or that work is not easy to get at this time.

Put such talk, thoughts, OUT of your mind and your speech.

Instead, thank God (Looks like you know Him, right?) every day for the work that He has for you to do!

God has a plan and a purpose for your life - and He wants to guide you step by step into that plan/purpose.

It is not something to worry or fret about (and it doesn’t look as if you are worried - so good).

You may do this already, but I would recommend you start every day with maybe 15 to 20 minutes reading His Word - wherever you want to read in His Word is fine - just ask Him to bless the meditation of your heart and the words of your mouth - and He will speak to you through whatever part of His Word you choose to read each day. Just a few verses are fine.

Include a few minutes/words to Praise and Thank Him who bore your sins, your worries, your affirmities, your diseases, on the cross where He poured out His Life and His Blood for you, to forgive and cleanse you of all your sins and to bring you into His Kingdom and to give you New Life (resurrection life) in Him, and to write your name in the Lamb’s book of Life - so you will be with the Lord Jesus and all His saints forever!

He says that the hairs on your head are numbered, and that He knows your rising up and your lying down, your goings and your comings, and that no matter where you go or what you do, He is right there with you!

Then ask Him to guide your steps that day, and to make the words of your mouth to glorify Him (May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in thy sight Oh Lord my strength and my Redeemer).

Thank Him for pouring out His Holy Spirit on you and on all you do and all you meet and talk to that day.

Then just rejoice in Him, His provision for you, His promised ordering of your steps (If you seek Him first, all these things will be added unto you....job, work, spouse, friends, income).

I will promise each day will be an adventure and a joy!!

God bless you and please report back on your adventures!

Stop thinking of employment as a Job and start thinking of it as Work. When you talk to a potential employer, tell them you want to work. Don't tell them you're looking for a job.

Back when I was running an Asphalt Company, my ‘rule of thumb’ was that if someone showed up at 6AM WITH THEIR LUNCH, I would hire him on the spot.
That person came looking for work, not an excuse or an alibi.

Thank you for the kind words! This thread definitely turned out to be such a huge, huge help... I hope it grows more with more ideas.

I definitely believe God has set a path for everyone. We must always have faith, and that if we are comfortable, we need to be extremely grateful.

This country needs to go back to it’s roots, with entrepreneurs and hard working people. I have a few ideas in the works just because of this thread. By next week I am hitting the ******* pavement!

My friends just like to watch TV and play xbox. They think that having a resume when graduating college is their one way ticket to riches.

Why is this government so hostile to entrepreneurs? Do they not realize that it is the bedrock of the economy???

You are welcome. And you are going to be just fine!

Your friends will see what you are doing and will “get it” eventually.

Just keep doing what you are doing, be kind and forgiving and joyful towards them, but you just keep on keeping on with joy and determination and God will take care of the rest (as said in previous post to you).

Glad you know God has a purpose and a plan for your life. So why not seek HIM and ask HIM to guide your steps into that plan?

Then relax, follow the path He sets out before you one step at a time, and rejoice all along the way. That doesn’t mean there is no work involved. Of course you have to work at anything you do - but do it all to the Glory of God - whatever you do - either in your search or when you actually have begun your work - and He will take care of the rest.

I so wish I had known this when I was your age. Would have saved me a lot of years of “worrying”.

Forgive me, but just don’t worry, or even spend a minute thinking about what our government is doing or is not doing about anything that concerns you as far as your efforts to find what work/life’s calling - that God has planned for you to do. Just give that question to Jesus and He will handle that also.

We truly are not to be anxious about anything, but in everything (say to yourself “in everything”) through prayer and supplication let your requests be made known unto God and He will supply every need and will bring you His peace and Joy in the Holy Spirit - which will make your life one so full of joy (unspeakable and full of glory) that you will be dancing through your days!

That doesn’t mean you will not have troubles or sorrows or trials or hardships.

It just means that you will walk with the certainty that He is right there with you along every step of the way, even during times of confusion, chaos, troubles, difficulties, and trials.

And that when you commit your way to Him, when you delight yourself in HIM, He will take care of everything else! He will order your steps, bring into your path every person He wants you to encounter, and will open the doors for you to go through into the plan and purpose that He has for your life!!!

Of course you will probably encounter obstacles as you move along this path that the Lord Jesus lays out before you, one step at a time (Ask Him to give you a Vision - His Vision - of your life’s calling/plan - and He will do it!)

You are so fortunate to be at this time in your life and to have access to all the technology that God has made available in your day.

And, oh, pray for your friends to “get it” - the sooner the better for them. But just give THAT to Jesus too and then just bless your friends however He shows you to do so...and leave the rest to Him for them too.

Above and beyond the suggestions made to directly pursue a paying position, you should consider volunteering for worthy organizations such as a food bank or an outreach ministry distributing donated clothing and houshold items. It’s certainly needed right now.

Show up on time or early without fail, be cheerful, work hard, take and follow direction well, make friends and contacts, and begin building a support network of people who appreciate your ability and desire to make a difference.

That, in and of itself, will lead to a paying position in time if nothing else will. You’ll have the satisfaction of becoming part of the larger community in your area as well, which should help with the feelings of guilt about being dependent upon your family.

You should be trying to find ways to have your own business, you never get rich working to make someone else money, be your own boss and make your own hours.

Look at businesses in your area, look at how they operate together and find something that isn't being done or can be done better, network with people, find people who are talented and can make things happen for you.

Project confidence in yourself, you're the boss, you make the decisions. In a society of sheep, its the wolves that decide how everyone lives. There is no better feeling than having built something yourself and have it succeed, but don't be afraid to admit that you might have made a mistake and correct for changes in the marketplace (no shame in being wrong, but if you don't admit it you'll never learn anything).

As others have said, persistance is the key. You say you have a marketing background, perhaps sales is where you should look for employment. Selling yourself is just as important as selling a quality product. Dress nice, keep in shape and have confidence in yourself.

Oh, and stay away from the McJobs, if you're intelligent and driven, you wont like it there.

It depends on where you live. There is one city that is rapidly growing in population, has an unemployment rate of 3.9%, and is experience a renaissance of source in terms of the amount of young people/total population. There is also plenty of housing construction. The city is my hometown and will surprise you:

New Orleans

We have among the highest need for construction workers, bartenders, hotel clerks, etc. of any city in the country. We also have one of the highest percentages of young professionals (college grads) in any city. 40% of the white, adult population in the city is under 35 and single.

We're coming back in a big way. And we need smart people. The suburbs of the city were mostly unaffected by the storm, as those levees held. Most neighborhoods that flooded were those you would never go to anyway.

New Orleans just made, as a city, $200 million dollars from visitors coming to the city to WATCH the Super Bowl. Mardi Gras was the highest attended in 25 years.

I guarantee you that you could find a job here and no where else will you have as good of a time. It isn't just Bourbon St., there are fun places to go all over town.

My 2 cents.

After giving up on large company world, I have started doing some short contracting IT and hopefully photography/video gigs. I do a lot of trolling on Craigslist and since I am in a not so big state, I sweep the states surrounding me. Some stuff has come to me word of mouth. I also spent a few minutes with Photoshop and a card maker program and produce my own business cards. For the longest time I collected other cards to see how other people did theirs. I kept good ones and some bad ones.

I would also add accounting to your major. Most accountants always have jobs, especially at tax time.

Marketing is a very difficult major to get a job in right now. My niece has a marketing degree. She originally went into real estate, but has lost those jobs. Currently, she is working at Saks as a store clerk, and not getting paid much.

I guess it's only me that finds the irony in a marketing major that can't even market him/herself to a burger joint or Walmart. Leave the smiley faces off of the end of sentences in your applications.

If you're looking for a business to get into, make sure it is something you love ... that way you'll never spend a day working.

“Work for yourself, set the rates as you see fit.”
_________

My nephew had a sales job at Radio Shack. When people were uncertain about how to set up their new music system or computer, he would mention that his brother would be happy to do it for them. His brother would come out to their house and set it up and, when asked what he would charge, he said, “just pay me what you think it’s worth.” People paid him a lot more than he would have charged. I guess he undervalued himself because the job was easy for him, but to his customers he was saving them considerable aggravation.

Toastmasters might be something to join. They teach you how to present yourself to the public through learning how to give speeches, and many people in the club are in business and are networking. They’ll help you put your best foot forward.

Well, my dad taught me I always have a job. When out of work, your full time job is finding a job. You spend 50+ hours a week seriously looking for a job...make it your job, and you’ll find one. Then find another one (it’s easier to find a job when you’re employed).
