Climate, Culture, and Catastrophe in the Ancient World
Sanford University ^ | 2001 | Meehan

This page presents a summary narrative of and links to geological and paleoclimatalogical data bearing on the remarkable events of 3000 BCE (calendar years BC), when urban/technological society began.

Most of ouromes from referenced scientific literature, although some of the studies, such as of the Mesopotamian delta, and certain sea level interpretations, are the author's.

You will also find a handy chronological index HERE. A summary graph of events around 3200 BC will be found here.

This is a very old site that I had forgotten about. Blam posted about this era several times over the years and I am posting this so I won't forget the site.

Many of the links are dead but Prof Meehan brings out a lot of interesting points.

Go to the Link.

If you can get to the original site Meehan is a rather cool guy, married a much younger woman, and has a good sense of humor.

The thing that brought this to mind is a thread that Blam posted years ago about a meteor crater discovered in Iraq dated to about this period.

Why this popped in to my mind as I was driving back from purchasing some alcohol to celebrate kicking my dear exes ass all over the Family Court System in Mass is a mystery.

On second thought, for a guy to get justice in the Probate and Family Court in Mass is an asteroid strike.

Meteor clue to end of Middle East civilisations

By Robert Matthews, Science Correspondent
(Filed: 04/11/2001)

SCIENTISTS have found the first evidence that a devastating meteor impact in the Middle East might have triggered the mysterious collapse of civilisations more than 4,000 years ago.

With reference to obscured craters in aluvial plains: A few years back, in one of Saddam Hussien's public works projects, a swampy area in southern Iraq was drained. In so doing, what appears to be a submerged meteorite crater was found that is thought to date to about 2350 BC. It is being hypothesized that the meteorite impact may have caused the demise of some early bronze age (historical) civilizations. See the Cambridge Conference Network Summary. [Added 07 Dec 2005.]

The author of this webpage used Google Earth to search for the exposed crater (Umm al Binni Lake) which, according to one source, is at 31 08 58 North 47 04 44 East, but he was unable to discern its presence. It's reported to be about 45 miles south of Al'Amarah, Iraq, and 10 miles northwest of the confluence of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. The Google Earth coordinates of Umm al Binni Lake are 31 14 26.5 North, 47 06 16 East. The lake is 28 miles (45 km) northwest of the confluence of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers and 42 miles (67 km) south (about 190 degrees CW from north) of Al'Amarah. See Master and Woldai (2004) (6) [Added 04 Jul 2008.]

Looks like they are trying to tell us it's not there, but I can still see it in the black and white image. Seems Umm al Binni Lake was created AFTER the original image was taken. It's NOT in the same location.
