A drug that failed to fight the blues could be the female answer to the little blue pill Viagra, the lead North American investigator analysing tests of the drug said Tuesday.
Women who took the drug flibanserin when it was being tested as an anti-depressant said it didn't help them beat the glums, but did give them "an increase in libido that they liked," John Thorp, one of the investigators analyzing data from three clinical trials of the drug, told AFP.

Does this strike anyone else as .... lets put out a drug, see what it does and then market it accordingly? Seems a tad scary to me that you shoot at one target, miss and then move the bullseye.
I wonder how it works on post-menopausal women.

Doesn’t bother me. For hundreds of years, that’s how medicinal remedies were discovered — by accident. Plus, when a drug ends up being used for something it wasn’t originally intended for, there’s much less chance that the studies supporting it for that use have cherry-picked or made-up results.
A friend of mine said that when his wife got on anti-depressants it was like flipping a switch in her head. He said she instantly became more “adventurous.” I asked him which one she was on, but he didn’t know.

Anybody else notice that it’s always MEN finding this stuff?
That's what happened with Viagra. It was initially being tested as blood-pressure medication. It didn't help with blood pressure, but none of the test subjects were willing to turn in the unused medication when the tests were deemed unsuccessful. Pfizer inquired as to why they weren't getting the ineffective pills back and discovered that the men were happy with the results of the "unsuccessful" drug.

My company has been working on this for several years. I’ve actually participated in the manufacturing process.
Maybe this can be used by working conservatives who only have 1-2 kids to help even up the odds for future generations.
The real question is - how do I slip this into my wife’s margaritas?

Perhaps it’s because I’m a guy, but I don’t see that as a failure. LOL
That's what clinical trials are for: to test the effectiveness. But sometimes, they find that it has a desirable side effect.
Minoxidil was originally used to treat high blood pressure. It was found to promote hair growth, and is now available over-the-counter in Rogaine.
Finasteride is used to treat prostate cancer. It was also found to promote hair growth, and is now marketed as Propecia.
