At least there is something good in the bill, not much, but something. I’m not optimistic we’ll get the 41 Democrats we need to defeat it though.

So they added an amendment making abortion part of the “death” bill? May God have mercy on this nation if this mess passes the Senate and becomes law.

It restricts federal funds from paying for abortions, in most cases.

It would prohibit federal funds from paying for plans which cover abortions. So, the language of the amendment is good. The problem is that it will probable be stripped out of the bill in the conference committee and it gives pro life dems cover to now vote for the healthcare bill.

Against. It's an amendment to prohibit federal dollars supporting abortion under Obamacare. It will probably get stripped out of the bill in conference or ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in a few years. The main effect is to give Blue Dogs cover when they vote for the bill.

The amendment prohibiting federal funds for abortion from health care funds is passed but with the understanding that this might be dropped in the Conference Committee.

The Stupak amendment removes most abortion from the bill. Its not perfect but decent for a democrat.

I disagree. The Republicans got rolled on this amendment. It will be taken out in committee after the bill is voted on.

We can't look back, but if pubbies had acted responsibly when they had the majority we wouldn't be in this nightmare.

I am normally not a pessimist, but our government has gotten so bloated and all-powerful there is not much the average citizen can do to stop this train. After I visited Mikulski's office I checked her staff - over 25 people! Disgusting.

don’t go mad but would this have been better
some of the GOP votes present, making the bill fail thus making it harder for blue dogs to vote yes for Govt care.???

“Excuse my ignorance but is that for abortion or against abortion?”

Neither...it is a meaningless fig leaf to give cover to the DIMS who are too chicken shite to vote...CNN says there are at least 35 ready to vote no on the HC bill, but that still leaves us shy...although it is closer than I thought it would be...but this laugher of an amendment will dissappear in the reconciliation with the Senate bill, which will be the REAL test...but there is still a chance this could go down tonight...slim, but possible...but really, this will all be neaningless until the Senate and House bills get totally screwed together (so we can be totally screwed, together) later on...

"Excuse my ignorance but is that for abortion or against abortion?"

Neither. It's a bill to give cover to the blue dogs so they can vote for the final health bill. They got their cover. They can now say to their electorate that they voted against federally funded abortions and can now vote for the whole monstrosity. It's over. We lost this round.

It is a strong pro-life vote that is going to give the RATS huge problems after tonight. The margin was stronger than anticipated, which will infuriate the abortion lobby.

Naive thinking. Look at the big picture. Kill healthcare. This is not about abortion right now. It’s about healthcare. We want to get rid of both. Keep your focus. It’s about the healthcare bill.

I think its going to lose some pro abort votes for the democrats.

I don’t think so. I’ll bet that they have promised the pro-abortion crowd that they will change it before it’s final form, or just take a separate vote next year to make sure that abortion is available to all, as often as desired, for free to those who don’t want to pay for them. This amendment is a temporizing measure to get the votes.

"I think its going to lose some pro abort votes for the democrats."

It is a fact that it will be added in between the house and senate. Everyone knows this. This was just for blue dog cover. It's a travesty and will be reborn in the final version. Awful.

It’s a charade- this amendment will be dropped or watered down in conference committee. The final bill will allowing abortions in case the mother’s health is in danger. This is an exception wide enough to drive a truck through.

My congressman, Steve Driehaus, promised not to vote for the bill if it included abortion coverage.

This gives him cover so that he can vote for the health care bill, then abortion coverage will be reinserted later.

Libs are freaking evil!!!!!

“I am normally not a pessimist, but our government has gotten so bloated and all-powerful there is not much the average citizen can do to stop this train.”

Relax and be of good cheer. The train stops when it runs out of fuel. The money is all gone and the credit cards are tapped out. They can't pass this bill or anything remotely like it because they can't pay for it. Long before any health care reform gets into the U.S. Code that simple fact will torpedo it. Pelosi may win tonight (I remain unconvinced) but the bill will die at some point anyway. Even if they pass it, the repo man will take it away before it does much harm. All the Democrats can accomplish at this stage is to damage themselves politically.

Sit back and enjoy the show. They're imploding.

The “Life of the Mother” amazing how that thing can be expanded rapidly. It was a good trick by Pelosi to allow this to come up and pass, pick up the hard-core Pro-Life Dems and strip it in Committee. The Amendment is at least something, but the Bill remains and always will be, a monstrosity.

“It’s a charade- this amendment will be dropped or watered down in conference committee.”

No doubt Pelosi is promising to do exactly that, but that doesn't mean she can deliver. If that's the plan it just kicks a dispute that makes it impossible to get a majority behind any final bill down the road to explode the process later. The abortion dispute is just one of the problems Dems are trying to paper over here. They are much too deeply divided to get this done.

I agree, the bill remains a disaster and hopefully somehow it can die. It’s up to a Senate filibuster I fear because there is no way Pelosi would miscalculate and have it go to the floor without ensuring she had 218. Granted, passing it by one or two votes won’t look good, but they don’t care.

I have been watching this show for the last 40+ years, and the government continues to explode: EPA, Dept of Ed, EEOC, Homeland Security, and on and on and on. We didn't have the money for those programs either, we just print more so the dollar can deflate even further. Sorry, but I've had it.

The Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) amendment to the House health bill, which would bar federal funding for most abortions, has passed on a vote of 240-194. Democrats split 64-192 against the amendment, but 176 Republicans voted in favor of it while none opposed it and Jon Shadegg of Arizona voted present.
