I have purchased Windows 7, and have downloaded it. I now have the file Win7-HP-Retail-en-us-x86. on my desktop. I would like to do a custom install (i.e. wipe out everything on the disk and reinstall software), not an upgrade. Therefore:
- MUST I copy this win7 application to a CD or DVD? I'm thinking I should, because if I don't, won't the installation of Windows 7 wipe out the Windows installation file itself?
- If I do have to burn a CD or DVD with this Win7 file, must I make it bootable? I need the computer to boot off this CD/DVD, right? Am I going to have to do that old Dos SYS D: command? how else will the system "know" to make the CD bootable?
Thanks.
yes, put the iso onto a dvd(Since a cd-r will be too small to hold it) then when you restart the computer, make sure its booting directly to the CD..then just let it install..it will restart a few times, just let it go and dont press anything, takes about 20 minutes to do
If you downloaded an ISO, just burn it to disc using your favorite program (InfraRecorder, etc.).
If it's an exe file, you may need to put it in it's own folder and work from there. If it's a zip or rar file, do the same. Another option would be to place it on another drive and go there to install. You just have to know what the file extension is to know what to do.
Just to get better advice, what is the last 3 letters after the”.”?
We went from Vista to 7, and our superguru just took us back to XP, and everything is wonderful.
The file name is Win7-HP-Retail-en-us-x86.exe. I think you’re saying that all I need to do is burn this file to a DVD? Then, I tell the computer to boot from the CD/DVD drive? But don’t I need to make the DVD itself bootable?
You went from 7 back to XP? May I ask why?
(Just curious. I don’t have 7 but was thinking about it.)
Take it in for a refund and buy a MAC!
.iso look it up.
Is it an iso or an exe?
If it’s an exe, you can copy it to any fat or ntfs partition and run it. If it’s an iso, you must first extract the files. I use 7zip to do this. After extracting, make sure all of the extracted files are in one folder, copy them to the drive (with a fat or ntfs partition) and run the exe.
You can also do this from within Windows, that is run the exe. Windows will then do some stuff, ask you some questions, and tell you it has to restart to complete the installation.
Short answer is no, if it’s an iso you do not need to burn it to a cd.
Make an ISO image of your Windows 7 download
Here are the steps to do a clean install with your new DVD:
Why didn’t you run XP on 7 using virtual XP?
