dictionaries ad nauseum, internet | 5 November 2009 | Thursday's sub

Posted on 11/05/2009 4:19:32 AM PST by secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

truculent \TRUCK-yuh-luhnt\, adjective
1. Fierce; savage; ferocious; barbarous.
2. Cruel; destructive; ruthless.

Example sentences:
I ask whether impeachment will become still another arrow in the quiver of the warrior class of ever more truculent partisan politicians in Washington.
-- "Former Watergate Prosecutors See Censure as Alternative in Clinton's Case", New York Times, December 9, 1998

Bitter and truculent when excited, I spoke as I felt, without reserve or softening.
-- Charlotte Bronte, Jane Eyre

Those bamboozled into believing palpable untruths that are recognized as such by the larger community are likely in time to develop an attitude of truculent resentment and outright paranoia rather than self-esteem.
-- Thomas M. Disch, The Dreams Our Stuff Is Made Of: How Science Fiction Conquered the World

Etymology:
Truculent derives from Latin truculentus, from trux, truc-, rough, savage, fierce.

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

On a different forum, I sometimes use as a signature a quote by Muhammad Ali during an interview with Howard Cosell when Cosell used the word 'truculent'.

Ali said, "I don't know what truculent mean, but if it's good, I'm that!"

Look if an anti-fascists parable strikes you guys as hitting a little too close to home, then maybe its time you looked at yourselves.

What did you think of the show?

It didn’t help to have two impossible things happen before the aliens even announced themselves. First the FBI lady just slips behind the police line and nobody notices (Worst. Perimeter. Ever.). Then, in a panicked city with airplanes falling out of the sky and people running to and fro, she locates her son instantly.

I thought the show was slightly rushed. They could have taken more time to develop things slowly.

I liked it. A lot. Peace, devotion, universal health care, and a gullible populace that just excepts these shady creatures with no past...gee sounds familiar.

It’s missing something though for me, Jane Badler was pure evil as Diana and we haven’t seen that from the new V’s, yet.

The “Anna” character blinks too often, a subtle clue to her un-humanity. The way she, on camera, said “you can ask me anything” after being just the opposite beforehand was chilling in its chutzpah.

Interesting, too, is the backstory with the terrorists and the involvement of Vs in the resistance.

I liked the whole “sleeper cell” of V’s bit. They really updated this thing to fit our times well.

Anna has potential but at this point I like Diana better.

xsfrosh is having it administered today at her school. and you know what convinced me of it’s safety? the fact that they are giving it to GITMO detainees first. LORD KNOWS they won’t do a blessed thing to endanger the jihadists, so that must mean it’s safe.

i don’t see how that could work for mlb. the reason is simple supply and demand. the supply of nfl games is very small compared to baseball, and the demand is very high. 500 games a year vs. 5,000 - most of the mlb games aren’t huge monday night events, they’re just one in a long season. mlb gets some money from the networks for weekly games, but it’s nothing like what nfl gets for football. besides, i don’t see how bud selig could be useful if he wants to negotiate local tv contracts for the yankees in one market and the royals in a market that is totally different due to fan base, revenue expectations, and local costs. (i don’t see how bud selig could be useful in much of anything, but that’s another story.)

team owners with money and media access drove revenues up with the cubs and wgn, braves and tbs, and then the red sox and nesn. since then, the dolan family adopted that model with cablevision and the knicks and rangers. this proved that it doesn’t work if the owner is an idiot. the yankees and mets are also on the home team channel bandwagon. in both cases, they spend much of the money on the team.

i can’t see how mlb could make an honest effort at controlling revenue against a network that the team also owns. if they forbade the team from charging a high amount for the games, the team owners just get their own games on the cheap and put the money in their pockets, as opposed to investing in players. until recently, the red sox were guilty of this, but they changed their ways and the result is two ws wins so far.

besides that, the talent pool for baseball is much bigger than that of football. baseball has four levels of minor league talent, plus college ball, plus numerous other countries to find new players. i’ve seen australians, koreans, japanese, canadians, venezuelans, and dominicans in the world series in the last ten years. if you can’t afford players from usc, get them from somewhere else.

if you’ve never read moneyball, i recommend it as one of the most interesting books about the game that was ever written. the red sox, in addition to loosening up the purse strings a bit, have been following billy beane’s methods and it produced two wins for them. granted they do not have the same budget as the marlins or the diamondbacks, but it shows what a team with a good budget and sound management can do.

incidentally, if team ownership acts foolishly and ignores the future needs of the team, why should it compete with the teams who realized that revenue is the central factor of the game?

Yeah, it was foolish of Pittsburgh to only have 2 million people compared to NYC’s market.

The NHL draws talent from aroudn the globe, has little in national TV contracts, most revenue is local from tickets/concessions and local TV rights.

Yet it doesn’t stop the league from having a reasonable salary cap that allows all teams to operate from a fair standing.

Baseball is all about the money and who can buy the best players. Yes, exceptions occur with good systems who draft and develop well. And no, money doesn’t guarantee a victory.

But when the system is set up do one team can spend more on one player than other teams do on their entire payroll, there is little reason for fans to root for the local also-ran.

In comparison, in the NFL ineptitude not revenue prevents certain franchises from success.
