By Robert Pigott BBC News, Religious affairs correspondent

About two-thirds of Malaysia's population is Muslim The Malaysian government has refused to release 10,000 Bibles which it seized because they contained the word Allah to refer to God.

The government, which is dominated by Muslim Malays, claims that the word Allah is Islamic and that its use in Bibles could upset Muslims.

The Roman Catholic Church is challenging the ban in court.

Religion has become highly sensitive in Malaysia, where about two-thirds of the population is Muslim.

Religious minorities have accused the government of undermining their rights.

The government has impounded Bibles before, intercepting 5,000 in March as they were imported from Indonesia.

Proof that Allah is not the same God.

I suppose my Malay language version of "Helter Skelter", where I replace "Charles Manson" with "Allah" is probably a no-go, then...

Yet the Muslims claim that Jesus was a prophet of Allah. Does it not make sense to have the word Allah in a book about a prophet of Allah?

I do not think it wise or prudent to introduce the word/name “allah” into a Bible for ANY reason.....

If the Malaysian word for G0d is the same as the word for allah, how is any religious minority supposed to discuss their G0d without using the word?

muslims suck

I was going to suggest we send this story to every lib we know who claims that “Islam is not a threat because God and Allah are the same Deity”. Guess moslems don’t agree with that bit of PC BS!

Good point.

Part of the way Islam tends to paint itself into a corner. They tend to follow their precepts to their logical conclusions with no allowance for common sense, as that sort of human judgement is generally discouraged.

Not only is the Koran the literal word of God, allegedly unmodified, its very language is the literal word of God and translations by definition are corruptions of the word.

The very words on paper are holy, hence the sacrilege of Koran-destruction, as is the transcription of the Arabic words in non-religious works by infidels.

You'll have to take that up with Arabic-speaking Jews and Christians.

Oh, they do agree. That point is explicit in the Koran, and the Hadith as I recall, and it is doctrine in all flavors of Islam. The Christian and Jewish God is Islams Allah, as far as they are concerned. Thats why there are special provisions in their scripture and all their schools of law.

The problem here is the OTHER Islamic idea, which is not universal, merely a not uncommon interpretation/logical conclusion, that the actual WORDS in the Koran are sacred. The divine revelation to Mohammed is held to have been in that specific language, with those specific words. literally the word of Allah. Given the rigid prescriptive and legalistic nature of Islam, this is a critical point.
