This'll be my first thread I start on FR, so forgive me if it's in the wrong place - I need some advice. I don't often have the chance to interact with liberals but when I do, it's usually a situation that quickly turns nasty. See the attached photo of the thread I was banned from. I'm "Jesse." The other names have been removed because despite them being dumb libs I don't want them FReeped ;)

There were a couple of other typical moonbat shrieks of rage before I was banned from the thread and my comments were erased - typical libs, cutting the mic and sanitising any evidence of opposition.

How can I effectively counter stuff like this while keeping the discussion civil?

Also, to answer the questions of “why was this person on your FB to begin with” - they hadn’t displayed any overt signs of liberalism like this before; so they were previously OK.

Looks like a stormy romance. Rush gives the best advice on discussing the issues with liberals - you can’t.

Arguing with an idiot, they bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Best to just move on.

Also, my final response would have been: It is compelling how my initial questions have still not been answered, and how quickly caustic the tone became. My initial comment about liberals acknowledged, I asked a couple of questions, and for some explanation of a viewpoint in a civilised, respectful manner - despite how 'illogical' or '(insert name of conservative radio host here)-fed,' they may seem, they were not answered - only ridiculed and screeched about. I am proud to be a conservative - if only to keep away from the infantile liberal mindset that prevents objective evaluation and frank, polite discussion of provacative issues.

It's real simple. Tell them this:

There is no discrimination at all. Any man, gay or straight, is free to marry a woman. Any woman, gay or straight, is free to marry a man. That is ABSOLUTELY EQUAL TREATMENT. That's equal rights and equal protection.

A good way to start is to accuse THEM of being intolerant and bigoted and narrow-minded. Then they have to defend their BS. And you remain all “more in sorrow than anger.”
They are typically jackasses and will fall for it every time.

To be blunt, you can’t.

If you stay calm and corner them with facts, they’ll shriek, scream, get vile, and ban you.

If you try to match their virtiol, they’ll shriek, scream, get vile, and ban you.

In fact, if you don’t agree with them 100%, they’ll shriek, scream, get vile, and ban you.

It’s like trying to teach a pig to sing: Can’t be done, and it annoys the pig.

PS Sometimes annoying the pig is fun, but don’t expect any other result.

The other people in that thread are cussing, personally attacking you, and acting like this is the first time they’ve encountered someone who disagrees with their opinion. I am having trouble understanding why it was YOU who were banned.

Ironic, isn't it, that those who claim to wish a civil debate use the most foul and abusive language that can be dredged up, triggered simply by the fact that another opposes their viewpoint?

My husband always says you cannot have a rational conversation with an irrational person. Of course, he is referring to his FIRST wife. ;)

Liberalism is a mental illness. You can’t reason with mentally ill people.

These two sentences would be a nice parting shot before you go. I agree there comes a point where you have to drop the argument. Clearly these people are everything they accuse Christians of being -- hateful, irrational. It's projection.

But I don't think Christians' and conservatives' first impulse should be to give up the fight and walk away. That's gotten us into a world of trouble over the past twenty years -- that's how libs have taken over so much of society, with little or no opposition. A good argument, even against bitter, anti-Christian loudmouths, is never wasted.

My recommendation is to not get involved in these type of discussions on Facebook. So many people are going to regret what they post eventually. This is all archived and searchable at some point in the future. An employer might find this person's post and realize that this person is unhinged (regardless of their position).

Please heed this advice. Protect your privacy - let others post their diatribes. You stay out of it.

Bingo, CodeToad.

Sex and sexual attraction exist for an obvious biological purpose. Men and women have complementary parts for an obvious reason. Those are cold hard facts. Whatever dysfunction causes people to try to imitate intercourse with a person who lacks the correct plumbing, there is no reason why society should embrace it and pretend it is “normal.” It is no more “normal” than if a person had an irresistible urge to eat by stuffing his food in his ear.

Just because they imitate intercourse, does not mean that society should set up an imitation “marriage” so that they can feel better about themselves.

Experience has shown me that there isn’t much you can do with hopeless liberals. As is clearly evidenced in your exchange, liberals are creatures of unthinking, illogical, raw emotion, intolerance, and hatred.

Conservatives base their viewpoints mostly upon simple facts and logical conclusions derived thereof. A liberal’s emotional condition simply renders them intellectually incapable of responding to or even recognizing logic.

The best you can do is have a little fun getting their blood pressure up and watching the fireworks of their emotional outbursts. You can continue to needle them endlessly about how they won’t and can’t answer your actual questions, which is entertaining for a while, but don’t expect to get them to concede that they might be incorrect about anything, ever.

The personal attacks and insults mean you are winning, and getting banned means you won the argument.

I would suggest that you not make the problems of other people your own. Maintain your own civility. It’s like the advice you get in Al-Anon (for families of alcoholics): first, maintain your own sanity even though a family member is making your life chaotic by drinking. I know this can be difficult when people are screaming in your own face, but you cannot “save” other people. Set a good example. There’s no way of knowing, but they may eventually come around more to your way of thinking.

My Facebook news feed is a swamp of this kind of bile right now. All they’re doing is making it clear (if not for their own teaspoons of brain matter) who the real hate-spewers are when it comes to the gay marriage issue.

It’s best for your sanity not to get involved. Just hide the “usual suspects” from your news feed until the smoke from the election clears.

Respect the fact that the person has been on a life walk different from that of your own and they will necessarily have different views, perspectives and opinions unlikely to change anytime soon. Educate yourself about their positions and educate yourself about your own. Once you've gotten through these stages, you should be ready to begin civil discussion with all but the wild eyed fanatics.

Also, remind them that Raila Odinga's favorite cousin has narcissistic personality disorder.

Today's White House Press Release stated that Raila Odinga's favorite cousin was too busy last night watching an HBO documentary about himself to give a rat's ear about the VA, NJ and NY elections.

How's that for a damn narcissist's attitude?

1. Why? Do you know these people? Do you think you have a 1% chance of changing their minds? 25%? 60%? I think not.

2. When people are throwing crude and mocking slanders as their part of the ‘discussion,’ why on earth would you want to participate?

3. Maybe you could refer them to a well-written analysis from a Catholic perspective — something they could THINK about and digest. A bit of light in the darkness.

For those who call themselves “reality based”, they sure are good at directing that “critical thinking” only in directions that suit their beliefs.

Where are all these science geniuses when it comes to this sublect. They think about this subject with emotions... they think about global warming with emotions.

It has nothing to do with science for me, although I understand your logic about the REASON humans are attracted to sex. Our job is to reproduce, period. Every aspect of our life is put there to make sure that this is successful before we die.

For me its just plain and simply disgusting.

You can't debate with people like that. There's no logic in it. It's all emotion and hate.

IMO, there are three things you can do:

1. Ignore it
2. Delete them from your friends or group (or delete yourself) at the first sign of lunacy
3. Get into a useless, frustrating fight.

Some people that are uninformed are worthwhile trying to convince. People like that are not. My husband has a welfare loving cousin on FaceBook that now lives in England. There's no point in debating with him because he's an idiot and won't be convinced.

This quote kind of applies to your situation and all of us:

"Exposure to true information does not matter any more. A person who is demoralized is unable to assess true information. The facts tell nothing to him. Even if I shower him with information with authentic proof, with documents, with pictures. Even if I take him by force to the Soviet Union and show him concentration camps, he will refuse to believe it until he is going to receive a kick in his fat bottom." It all depends on what you mean by “persecution.” I, personally, take pains to reinforce the “yuck” factor in my kids and grandkids. Normal people are repulsed by what homosexuals do. That should never change. But the homosexuals understand what Alexander Pope said about vice: “First we pity, then endure, then embrace.” Hence, they are constantly trying to desensitize kids to the disgusting nature of what they do, and trying to equate what they do with heterosexual relations.

If by “persecute,” you mean not physically attacking them, I agree. If not “persecuting” means that you have to say, “Love is wonderful, no matter whom you love,” I disagree. Not every mutual application of friction to genitals constitutes “love.” Frankly, I like it when anti-sodomy laws kept them in the closet. It is a crime that those have been struck down as unconstitutional.

I deal with this a lot with my friends on Facebook. About half are liberal and pretty damn crazy. I’ve seen that the divide is very clear between libs and conservatives. There really aren’t many people in the middle. Those who are in the middle usually don’t care about politics so they just blow with the wind.

This was a status update from one of my friends, “thinks that those who vote against gay marriage should call or email all their homosexual family, friends and coworkers and explain why you think they are less of a person than you. If you don’t feel this way, you shouldn’t vote to limit a person’s right to equality and happiness. But really, the point is you shouldn’t feel this way...”

Like most libs, his argument is based on nothing but knee-jerk emotion followed by the obligatory telling me how I should live directly following a statement telling me not to tell others how to live.

In short, don’t discuss politics on Facebook. You can’t win with liberals because they have no logical thought process, and you just end up leaving a bitter taste with all of your friends.

eh, it would probably go no where - but my response would go as follows:

So what if the Bible was written nearly 2000 years ago? It is the Word of God (‘Holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost..’). HIS Word is timeless, and it is a treasure.
Just because it wasn’t written by some literary pygmy of the “21st Century” we’re to ignore it? One of God’s greatest gifts (amongst Grace, Salvation, and HIS Son) is HIS Word – and you’re saying we should ignore it because it is ‘old’? … This is the advice of a fool…

Now you talk about “love”, and “hate”. Christians are ‘haters’. They deny the right of two people who “love” each other to marry… So what exactly is this love and hate you speak of?

Let’s take the case of a heroin addict. Hopelessly addicted to his disease. Always looking for his next ‘fix’. The ‘hater’ comes by and tells the addict that he needs to stop shooting himself up. It is wrong. He is going to kill himself. The ‘hater’ offers to help the addict ‘kick’ his evil habit. But the ‘hater’ does call this ‘habit’ evil. Very judgmental. Quite the ‘hater’…
The ‘loving’ fellow comes by and tells the addict: ‘shoot up. If it feels good, do it. I am not one to judge. I love you – I affirm your right to live as you may…’ Who loves the addict, and who hates him?

If someone is ensnared in the sin of homosexuality it is no favor to tell them that ‘all is well’. We are all sinners – and thank God Jesus came to save sinners. But if we really believe in Jesus as our LORD (and that IS the only way to be saved) – there must be a repentance of sin. While we are in the flesh it is a long battle. Some ups, some downs. But there is a repentance. To tell someone trapped in sin that what they are doing is ‘OK’ is cruel. There is one destination for the unrepentant sinner – eternal hellfire where the worm dieth not… To claim otherwise, is to deny the Word of God. And to pretend that the Word of God is like a carton of milk with an expiration date is delusional.

You speak of two same sex individuals who “love” one another. If you truly love someone do you want them to go to hell? Or, are you like the individuals in Romans 1:32 “…Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them”. …; That is they know what they are doing is wrong, but they take pleasure in taking others down to hell with them… If a person has such sinful inclinations (and since the Fall we are all cursed with sinful inclinations of some kind – heterosexual adulterous lusts are no ‘cleaner’ than homosexual lusts; drunkenness, etc … we all have our sinful ‘spots’) he needs to repent and pray for the Spirit’s help to overcome the sin – not seek others to engage in the same sins.

You can’t argue, reason, or even discuss these matters with someone like that.

They have none of the tolerance and love that they demand everyone else demonstrate towards them.

None.

They are not interested in discussion at all, just trying to pic a fight.

You might be able to marginalize their attacks with some humor.

Or you might just take satisfaction in mocking them and really getting them PO’d enough to self destruct on line.

Save yourself the time and effort of even attempting to engage in meaningfull discussion. It won’t happen.
