It seems the planned protest of Lance Cpl. David Raymond Baker's funeral by Westboro Baptist Church, a Topeka, Kan.-based church known for picketing at the funerals of American troops who have died in Iraq and Afghanistan, never materialized.
"If they were there, they didn't make themselves known," said Painesville Police Capt. Rick Kline.
Painesville police received word from another department that protesters may have been on Walnut Avenue, though none were found upon investigation. There were also two buses that passed by the church before the funeral, but again, no protesters were involved.
"(The buses) slowly drove by because of all the people there, but they didn't attempt to stop," said Kline, speculating the buses may have been headed to the Lake Erie Storm football game that kicked off at 1 p.m. at nearby Jack Britt Memorial Stadium.
"We didn't have any issues whatsoever," Kline said. "The whole ceremony was what it was meant to be in respect to David Baker."
However, information received by The News-Herald indicates that Westboro agreed to cancel their protest at the last minute in exchange for one hour of air time on the Canton-area radio station WDJQ-FM 92.5.

I was there and watched the buses drive by.
the buses had Oregon plates, the team that the Lake Erie Storm played that day was from Kentucky.
I dont say that it was not the Kentucky team but it does seem unlikely that a Kentucky team would contract with a Oregon bus company to travel to Painesville, Ohio.
The Wetsboro Baptist are from Kansas. It seems more likely that the buses carried Nuts from Kansas than a football team from Kentucky.
Update on the Lance Corporal David Baker funeral.
Like trucking companies, bus companies will register many of their vehicles in a few states. It's not unreasonable for a bus to have OR plates and never see OR.
The vans were bringing two women’s volleyball teams from Tiffin and Glenville State to play at Lake Erie.
I was glad to see so many Marines, young and old, bikers and other supporters of the Baker family in the area that day.
I bow to your superior knowledge. I dont recall the name of the bus company so I can not look up their service area.
Your sure that it was the buses that drove by the funeral.
Thanks Pontiac!
They could fit in a cooper..
Did anyone hear the broadcast?
Not the buses, I did not see them, but I was at the gym when the two vans with the volleyball teams arrived.
Thank you.
