The nightly attacks by two man-eating lions terrified railway workers and brought construction to a halt in one of east Africa's most notorious onslaughts more than a hundred years ago. But the death toll, scientists now say, wasn't as high as previously thought.
Over nine months the two voracious hunters claimed 35 lives no small figure, but much less than some accounts of as many as 135 victims.

I remember the movie, that’s why the article caught my eye.
I wonder if the lions were in zero’s grandpappy’s village.
It was in Kenya. Could’ve changed history if they ate him.

Lion Mutilates 42 Midgets in Cambodian Ring-Fight Spectators cheered as entire Cambodian Midget Fighting League squared off against African Lion
Tickets had been sold-out three weeks before the much anticipated fight, which took place in the city of Kâmpóng Chhnãng.
The fight was slated when an angry fan contested Yang Sihamoni, President of the CMFL, claiming that one lion could defeat his entire league of 42 fighters.
...
The fight was called in only 12 minutes, after which 28 fighters were declared dead, while the other 14 suffered severe injuries including broken bones and lost limbs, rendering them unable to fight back.
Sihamoni was quoted before the fight stating that he felt since his fighters out-numbered the lion 42 to 1, that they
could out-wit and out-muscle [it].
Unfortunately, he was wrong.

The skins were originally used as rugs. The remnants of that were used for the stuffed lions you see today. That was the explanation I was told as to why they look so small. And yes, no manes.

I think it was 2 young males who hadn’t developed manes yet.
To: daku
Here they are:

Apparently they were both rare male lions without manes.
To: Bushite; daku
IIRC, the hides were damaged and the taxidermist had to scale the animal down to ‘make it work’.
Also, the fact that the lions did not have the typical male mane is one of the things that made them so dangerous. Again IIRC...
Without manes these lions could slip through the thorny underbrush more readily and be all sneaky.

Interesting.
I’ll have to check it out, I’ve always thought I was up on what’s what in the animal world, but I’ve never heard of adult African male lions without manes.
I watched a documentary where they put different fake male lions in an area with a pride of female lions. The fake males all had different lengths and colors of manes. The females preffered the males with the longest and darkest manes.
Maybe the ones that ate all those poor railroad workers in the 1800’s were just sexually frustrated, and went on a feeding binge.
