A town of Vermont man killed a pit bull that was attacking his 14-year-old German shepherd Sunday morning. Mary McMurray, 53, first tried to pull the pit bull off the couple's "furry kid," Dexter, who was attacked at their home around 10:20 a.m.

McMurray's husband, Robert Johnson, 64, heard her screams, and the couple used a baseball bat and a 40-pound iron rod to try to stop the attack. Finally, Johnson went to a shed and got a shotgun.

He shot the dog four or five times, killing it.

"I've never seen anything like it," said McMurray, who still was shaken late Sunday afternoon.

Dexter was treated for a couple of punctures above the trachea and is supposed to be released from the vet clinic today.

Lt. Brian Hayes of the Dane County Sheriff's Office said authorities don't know who owned the pit bull.

Well, when they find the owner of the pit bull, I hope they slap him with a big honkin’ fine for letting the animal wander freely.

“He shot the dog four or five times, killing it.”

A baseball bat, a 40-pound iron rod and a shotgun. Are they sure it wasn’t a zombie pit bull ?

Beautiful story. I am greatful that his dog will be ok. One less dangerous pit bull to worry about. I believe this will be done more often as we see the huge increase of pit bull attacks.

I am a ‘dog man’ and I can’t stand pitbulls .
I have owned examples of the breed over the years and they
have always caused far more problems than they were worth .
As a breed they are scary , and for good reason , to others .
The dog may appear to love it’s master (and family) but you just cannot trust them with others and especially other dogs .
Notice to pitbull owners : The is more in life than your own myopic relationship with your deadly weapon on four legs .
Way way too many people prefer this breed . I don’t know who’s
got less brains ; the dogs or the owners ?

Pit bulls, tattoos, piercings and rap music all go together. It’s a way of life!

I think the owner should be charged the same as if he had taken a gun and wounded the shepherd. Pit owners should be charged the same for the animals actions as if they had done the damage with their own hands. If they want to take a chance on an insanely vicious breed, they should be responsible for the consequences.

My son had a seemingly gentle, puff ball of a pit bull that he wanted me to take, but I still had kids at home that might run and I wasn’t going to ever take a chance on a pit bull switching into hunt mode. No WAY.

Hope Dexter is okay. 14 years old is getting up there for a dog, and often the older one is, the harder it is to heal.

Didn’t realize until after I posted on here that this was practically in our backyard.

Miss Z. is now 13— never thought she’d make it that far being such a large dog. We’ve been on borrowed time for a while, but now it’s official...

Yet again, dog running loose with no owner in sight. Irresponsible ownership, according to the experts (not the ratings-greedy media or google) is the number one cause of dog attacks. How many of these stories have you posted where the dog was a cared for, trained, socialized, fixed, registered, vaccinated inside dog? I can tell you, you don’t have to search. ZERO. Considering the 13 thousand daily attacks occurring from all kinds of dogs, and the fact that the majority of them are of the untrained, undersocialized, unvaccinated, intact, outside/chained, unregistered variety, I find it interesting that a breed of dog can have people so blinded to the real cause. What ever happened to personal accountability?
