I live and work in these mountains (in fact I drive past Pilot Mountain at least twice a week), and I never grow tired of seeing the things God has made. Thank you for posting.

You are very welcome - and I envy you your daily view! I was born in the NC Mountains and have a deep love of them in my heart - so you are very fortunate to live and work there.

FYI. If anyone is planning on driving down for a visit, I-40 is closed near the NC/TN border. Rock slide has closed down east/west bound lanes. They expect it to be closed for at least 3 months. Bummer.

I tried [posting the pictures] but am doing something wrong. You needed to first click on one and let it open in another window or tab. There you can access the .jpg location url.

Every summer (during the 1960s) we would go by scenic railroad from New York City to Tennessee to see my father’s relatives. (my father met my mother in NYC while on leave from the Navy back in the 1940s. I’ve lived here all of my life). Besides seeing all our wonderful relatives in Tenn, I used to really love the day trips we took to the Smokey Mountains. In fact, I loved it so much I eventually ended up majoring in geology. Since then I discovered that we had our beautiful mountains right here in New York State.

The mountain you are asking about is Pilot Mountain. The nearby town by the same name is the one referred to as Mount Pilot in the Andy Griffith series. The neighboring town of Mount Airy was the inspiration for Mayberry.

Thanks for the answer. I was wondering the same question too-—”Pilot Mountain”—really a cool and unusual top for a mountain......Beautiful..Beautiful shots. It is nice to slip away from thinking about all the problems in the world. Thanks.

My husband and I are life-long residents of NC and we went to the mountains on our honeymoon 36 years ago this past August. We vowed that we would go back every year. I can count on one hand the number of times that we have been back in all of that time. We live about twenty-five miles from the coast, but it really doesn't take THAT long to get there now that I-40 was completed several years ago. It seems we get too busy to take the time to enjoy God's handiwork! Thanks for posting these beautiful pictures! I saved them so that I can enjoy them again and again,
