'Smashing Pumpkins' Singer Claims Swine Flu Is An Obama Conspiracy
Newsbusters.org ^ | 10-30-09 | Noel Sheppard

I love a conspiracy theory, how about you?

Although this one isn't necessarily new -- lots of folks have opined about the convenient coincidence of an escalating so-called pandemic mixed with an under-supply of vaccinations while the country debates healthcare reform -- it's all the more delicious when it comes from a rock star of some note.

With that in mind, when singer, songwriter, and leader of the now defunct alternative band The Smashing Pumpkins suggests swine flu "is not a naturally occurring virus," and that "President Obama has declared a national emergency" when "there isn’t one," you have to pay attention just for the entertainment value alone.

I was a big Smashing Pumpkins fan when Gish came out, but they went downhill in a hurry. They were the worst live concert I’ve ever seen. Their encore was 20 minutes of noise. People left the coliseum in droves during the encore. I never bought another album of theirs.

The bald guy from Smashing Pumpkins: “The deeper message here might be that people will soon be ready to abandon the idea of a paternalistic system that governs this world. Before doing so, we must face down our deeper fears about our own liberty and tolerance. The time is coming when we will cast votes with our hearts and not our minds.”

Not to ruin his karma thingy, but didn’t we just vote our hearts not our minds a year ago? Hopeychangythingy.

In Rainbow Six by Tom Clancy, a billionaire enviromental wacko creates a virus called Shiva. The plan is to release it at the Olympics, thus ensuring that it will go to every country on Earth. When the pandemic takes root, he intends to distribute the vaccine, which in reality is the virus. Within a year, 90 percent of the human population will be dead and “the planet is saved”. Of course being stewrads of the Earth, they stay in a Bioshpere until the virus runs its course.

Corgan has always been a little (OK a LOT) off. He is one of those who think that pharmaceuticals will kill you and that all you need to do to cure things like cancer is to just stop eating meat, HIV doesn't cause AIDS (the latter is a conspiracy), and vaccinations actually cause the disease they are supposed to prevent. I recall a few years ago a rant about how companies were genetically engineering food to make you addicted to it. (Good singer though)..

Saw them in there first show in the US since 2000, Asheville, NC in June 2007 and it was fantastic. Sure, their new stuff sucked but the old stuff was incredible. Corgan has never regained the genius of Siamese Dream and MCIS but he still puts on a good show.

He actually mostly donates to Republicans. Vary rarely do authors and script writers get a lot of say in casting. They get a check for the rights to their work, that’s about it. (His address is the Huntingtown one below, I don’t know if the Baltimore is also him)

I remember it well, but mostly because Clancy wrote that the delivery device at the Sydney Olympics would be the big cooling water spray fans needed because the summers in Sydney are so hot. Problem is Australia is in the southern hemisphere and September is their late winter time. My suspension of disbelief was lost at that point.

But I did enjoy what happened in the end to the greenies at the hands of the Rainbow Six team.

I believe the Global Warming issue has made a lot of people overly skeptical of ‘science’ so they cling to anyone or anything that challenges conventional science, no matter how kooky. What they don’t see is the difference between so called science that attempts to play fortune teller- predicting the future, and real science that tests, analyzes, and actually has to make accomplishments regarding real life issues or problems. You see it far too often when people compare global warming science(sic) to vaccinations, etc.

I don’t hold that against anyone. We need to change minds in order to win.

I’ll say what I said on November 5th: The American people were given a choice between a radical leftist and a man who’s entire campaign was based on the idea that he’d ‘go across the aisle’ to work with radical leftists.

The American people, in electing Barack Obama, made the most quintessential of American decisions. They cut out the middle man and went right to the source.

Let’s worry from now on about giving people a PROPER choice rather than trying to berate them with a choice that really amounted to the evil of two lessers.

I don't believe Clancy is a liberal. He donated to Duncan Hunter for President...
http://www.newsmeat.com/celebrity_political_donations/Tom_Clancy.php

His wife is Alexandra Llewellyn, Colin Powell's niece. I bet family gatherings were interesting, like the rest of us, during the election;)

A quote on wikipedia from him says, “I’ve made up stuff that’s turned out to be real, that’s the spooky part. I like writing. It's the most fun I've ever had at anything. You can build your own little world and — like a kid with his toy trains, — except instead of trains I have tanks and ships and airplanes and things... I get to make them do all the things I want them to do, and if I don't like the way things work out, I start again. The information is all out there, if you go looking for it, and the classified stuff just comes from analyzing the unclassified stuff and connecting the dots.”
(Sounds like he could be a FReeper, connecting the dots and all)

It does make one wonder what “dots” he connected to come up with Rainbow Six though.....Scary times.

The ending is totally sweet;)

I think Corgan is the guy w/hair on the right. Homer was traveling with the group as the warm-up act who was "shot" with a cannon ball in his stomach.

SP: "Hi Homer, we're the Smashing Pumpkins."

Homer: "and I'm Smiling Politely."

Billy Corgan with hair? Or maybe this was an early episode from back before Corgan shaved it off. Either way, having Homer be the opening act for the Smashing Pumpkins is pretty funny.
