I'm befuddled trying to find a good Partion management software app.
I was looking at Acronis Disk Director, Paragon's app and Partitin Magic.
Since this is such a criticl decision,
I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions.
I want to repartition a drive so I can install Win7 Ultimate (I know, I know.... but I have to try it for work purposes and try the virtualization features.)
Many thanks in advance.
Fdisk?
I used this awhile back. It is free and worked great: http://partedmagic.com/wiki/PartedMagic.php?n=PartedMagic.UsingGParted
Does Windows 7 Ultimate INCLUDE virtualization features? I’ve been thinking about getting VMWare Workstation so I am researching the topic (and will post questions soon).
Heh...disklabel.
Partitionmagic works well for me.
Dittos on Parted Majic...I`d add really easy to learn too.
gparted.sourceforge.net/
It enables you to use all the features of the latest versions of GParted.
And it's free.
Love it. Wish it were a bumper sticker...would put it in my side window ;>)
That’s quite humorous..... NOT!
GParted is good. You can always try running it in VirtualBox too...
Been there and done that -
Finally found EASEUS Partition Master Home Edition.
You will receive a licensed copy for free that will allow you to create a new partition, format it, resize existing partitions all with an easy to use visual application.
This is not shareware, so you can use it over and over.
I like to create a new partition, move the My Documents Folder and other backups to the new folder.
Then if I want, I can waste the C:\Partition, rebuild the PC and still have my personal files when I have finished re-installing everything in a D, E or Whatever partition.
I keep at least 3 usb external hard drives..keep all important info on 1. I use the other two for recording music
Windows 7 Pro and up has a virtualization feature. It will run a virtual version of XP for compatibility. I’m not sure if it will run Linux. (It’s MS, so that’s probably a rhetorical question.)
FDisk will allow you to establish a partition so that the Operating System will find it and be able to perform a format. Suggest you use NTFS instead of FAT or FAT32 on the newer many multi gigabyte drives.
Fdisk can be used to delete an existing partition.
The challenge for most of us is to take a hard drive completely formatted for one partion and set up additional partitions.
First the existing partition needs to be resized to open up hard drive space that FDisk can use.
That is what Partition Magic EASEUS Partition manager and other utilities were designed for.
The reason I like EASEUS is you can install it with your windows programs, run the application. The APP will resize and move files on reboot. No boot disk is necessary.
They operate using the KISS principle - Keep It Simple Stupid.
FDisk, in the hands of a novice, can make all your stuff go away. It is powerful enough to do real damage, so proceed with each step carefully.
It's free and it is essentially a clone of Partition Magic. I've used both but free is better.
Same Here.
I remember terabyte disk units back at the office, now I have a 1tb backup drive for videos that I pull off of TVs from TiVo
