Word For The Day, Thursday, Rocktober 29, 2009 - stentorian
dictionaries ad nauseum, internet | 29 Octoberr 2009 | Thursday's sub

Posted on 10/29/2009 4:25:45 AM PDT by secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

stentorian \sten-TOR-ee-uhn\, adjective
Extremely loud.

Example sentences:
Around his family, Sergeant Charles Mingus Sr. was easily angered and often violent and closemouthed the rest of the time, except when he gave orders in a stentorian voice that carried the assumption of command.
-- Gene Santoro, Myself When I Am Real

He broke the tradition of stentorian tenors, whose big voices and melodramatic high notes were needed to fill the concert halls and vaudeville houses.
-- Richard Corliss, "The Book on Bing Crosby", Time, May 17, 2001

Then a stentorian voice blared an all-points bulletin: "Calling the G-men! Calling all Americans to war on the underworld!"
-- Strobe Talbott, "Resisting the Gangbusters Option", Time, October 15, 1990

The bearded, often curmudgeonly Knoller can be found in the press filing center on most every presidential trip, his stentorian voice booming out 35-second takes for radio -- as many as 20 a day -- and shaping the day's news for dozens of journalists who can't help but hear him.
-- Dana Milbank, "Bush by the Numbers, as Told by a Diligent Scorekeeper", Washington Post, September 3, 2002

Etymology:
Stentorian comes from Stentor, a Greek herald in the Trojan War. According to Homer's Iliad, his voice was as loud as that of fifty men combined.

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

"Rise and shine!"

Shouldn't that be "Twist and Shout"?

On the other hand, stentorian voices are not welcome this early in the morning, unless the house is on fire, and perhaps not even then. Just deal with it.

That was not the point being made by your detractors on that thread and it’s hyperbole to act like it was. Catholics ROUTINELY get dumped on, always fair game for any sort of crap that anyone wants to throw. Sure larry david is free to throw up any sort of swill, and it’s his own cash, but Catholics and other right-thinking Christians are perfectly within their rights to be outraged by it and to want to boycott the show, etc.
The point being made by others on the thread is that Hollywood ROUTINELY derides faithful Christians, this is just another hideous example of it. Long live secularism.

Hollywood isn’t going to change because Bill Donahue calls another press conference. I’m sure it helps him raise funds, but he’s like the boy who cried wolf.

People who already don’t watch a show acting outraged because of a third hand account of a scene and threateing to “boycott” something they already don’t purchase is ridiculous.

Sinead O’Connor ripping up a picture of the Pope was an outrage because she was making a comment about the Church. Larry David is not trying to do anything except be funny.

The point was not to offend. Finding offense where it isn’t intended isn’t very good for anyone. And attacking a person personally for having a different point of view is decidely unChristian.

Piss Christ was at a public museum, wasn’t it?

I do enjoy Larry David’s work. He’s not trying to make any statement, like I said. One time his TV self accidentally ate the Baby Jesus cookie his TV wife had made for her family’s Nativity.

It was funny. It wasn’t an attack on Our Savior. I’m sure Bill Donahue had a heart attack when he saw that, and called a press conference.

(Don’t get the wrong idea. The show has been on for 7 seasons. He’s not attacking Christ every week. And he has broached all kinds of “controversial” subjects.)

Well perhaps you should not have gone onto the thread to defend the indefensible if you weren’t wanting to be attacked. You certainly should have known that your viewpoint would be not be one common to FR.
And abortion isn’t going to be outlawed just because there is another prolife vigil in front of an abortion clinic, so we should probably stay home and keep our mouths shut. right?

No, there is a distinct difference between eating a baby jesus cookie and associating body waste with a religious figure. sorry. The statement that Larry David is making is that it’s ok to deride the faithful. ANYONE who would get upset about this TV show must be as ignorant and neanderthal as the poor idiot characters who reacted insipidly on the show. right? we should all be cosmopolitan and adult in our religious thinking and realize this is all harmless fun, right? sorry. it’s offensive.
so were you defending the piss christ? public museum/on tv, what’s the diff?

i am saying that if you are going to take a contrarian view on FR, your skin should be thick enough to stand up to whatever comes your way. you have been here long enough to realize that, and whining about it as being unchristian is kind of silly considering what you are attempting to defend.
not apples and oranges. Speaking out against the offensive no matter what/where, on principle, is RIGHT no matter whether you consider it ineffectual or not.

Where do you draw the line? Sounds like you would have been offended even if no body function was involved, but those who follow tortilla icons were still shown as gullible.

For the Piss Christ, I don’t remember all the details. And I was younger then.

no, i drew the line, i said the body function was offensive. that is my personal line. my complaint with shows like this, and the mentality in general is, that it DERIDES FAITH OF CHRISTIANS. makes sport of believers. attempts to make anyone who is OFFENDED by this clear attempt to offend, look SILLY for being offended by it, because we are all so sophisticated and adult and can laugh at ourselves.

The stentorian NAACP is all up in arms about an "offensive" display by a citizen on his own private property, even to the point of openly expressing a goal of forcing him to take down his display and putting him in prison (for the crime of erecting a display that they find offensive).
