Rising folk star Taylor Mitchell killed by coyotes
news ^ | October 29, 2009

A PROMISING young Canadian musician has been attacked and killed by coyotes while on a tour promoting her new album. Taylor Mitchell, 19, was considered a rising star of the folk music scene, having just earned a Canadian Folk Music Awards nomination.

She was hiking alone on the Syline Trail in Cape Breton Highlands National Park when a pair of coyotes attacked her.

Tourists rushed to her aid when they heard her screams and found Mitchell bleeding heavily from mulitple wounds "all over her body", according to The Canadian Press. "She was losing a considerable amount of blood from her wounds," paramedic Paul Maynard told TCP. One of the animals was later shot by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, but the other got away.

Park officials said it was highly unusual for coyotes to be involved in such an aggressive attack.

Coyotes? I highly doubt this. Coyotes would run away if you stepped towards them.

Concur. Sounds like wolves or wild dogs.

I would seriously doubt Coyotes were responsible. A small child or a small pet I've heard of, but never an adult.

I would have no qualms with shooting them on sight.

Winding through the northern half of Cape Breton Island, the Cabot Trail traverses the Cape Breton Highlands National Park, 366 square miles of magnificent highlands and coastal wilderness.

Actually, I know a guy who had a slight stroke and fell out of a tree stand while deer hunting.

He fought coyotes off him after falling on the ground. He HATES them, and is an expert on coyote hunting now. His techniques are pretty impressive, and he has been quoted extensively in outdoor magazines.

He also is an expert wild turkey caller, and avid turkey hunter, another reason he hates coyotes.

I think coyotes have been known to enter people’s open doors and attempt to drag small children from the house. Some wild predators fear people only because they have been hunted for centuries (e.g. wolves, black bears). Once hunting stops, they may become dangerous again.

How large was this 19 year old adult?

Two HUNGRY coyotes were after my 90 lb bull mastiff; was this gal much more or less than 90 lbs?

They shot one of the coyotes involved in the attack, assuming that it was legitimately linked to the attack, that would indicate that it was indeed a coyote attack.

Oh no they wouldn't. Many who live on the edge of land that has been turned into housing development have lost their fear of man. I've seen them follow a little boy on his 4 wheeler back into my yard. They also attacked two of our German Shepards.

Perhaps, but I’ve never heard of coyotes going after adult people is a head scratcher. Additionally, I’ve never seen them hunt together. Many odd and curious things do happen though.

I’d believe a feral dog or Coydog. Doubtful on a Coyote unless she was down and bleeding.

Interestingly, a Mule is one of the most efficient Coyote killers. They let them get in on the rear legs and “bang, zoom - to the moon.” It’s comical to watch in a weird way.

Coyotes fiercely protect their dens, fighting to the death. I have seen coyotes take on bobcats (well once I saw a coyote pair chase a bobcat out of the area).
Once I was working in the desert, and took a wiz. The next day, I noticed that there were coyote tracks around where I had gone and it was still wet. Betting that a coyote had marked his territory over me, I made sure I did it again. Next day, same thing so I continued. After about 4 days of this, the coyote simply defecated on the spot, ending the discussion. He won as far as I was concerned.

I don’t know about the coyotes up there, but in the South they are only about 25-40 lbs. On the smallish dog side of sizes.

The Eastern Coyote - Our Biggest Dog

The eastern coyote is actually a wolf-coyote mix, having interbred with wolves in northern Québec and Ontario as it moved eastwards. The mixed parentage has made it a very effective and adaptable predator.

Very sad

I have seen several young dairy heifers attack a young teenaged boy at our farm one day -

Animals are unpredictable - especially if they know how humans act

A 6 month old Brahma heifer can turn on you too from behind - flipping them down and applying steel-toed boots is the cure - but you still will have some black and blue spots

I wore my Colt and would shoot any dog, bull, rattler, horse, or gator if it became a problem

We found large cougar tracks near the woods quite often

I’ve seen a Brahma cow attack an experienced rider and put a horn through part of the saddle and kill a fine quarter horse at a large ranch near the Everglades

There is a reason American ancestors knocked off the coyotes. I lived in a subruban area where they were very agressive with pets and people. When they live around people and nothing bad happens to them, they begin to think they are the boss. Just like an untrained aggressive dog.

Never met a coyote that didn’t run when it saw me.

Don't count on that. I live in the near foothills in northern CA, about 25 miles out of Sacramento. It is a rural area, lightly developed (lots of large mandarin groves and christmas tree farms, with five acre lots in the developed areas).

This spring, my neighbor had to bring down a coyote stalking one of his animals because it didn't run when he confronted it.

At various times of the year we are inundated with them, and it's interesting to see them try to lure our dogs. Mine is a 60 pounder and my neighbor's is about 20 pounds larger. They don't scare easily.

Coyotes? I highly doubt this. Coyotes would run away if you stepped towards them.

Two coyotes attacked our cocker spaniel when she wandered off a trail where we (hubby and I) were hiking. She was terrified. It was definitely two COYOTES and it was very frightening. We had bear spray, but the coyotes fled upon seeing us. We were in the nether-regions of a state park at the time. A single coyote took down a fawn in a neighbors yards recently as well, viewed by our neighbor.

I looked at her press shots, and judging by her size compared to her guitar, she wasn’t very big. I’ve never heard of an adult being killed by coyotes before, but there are a lot of things that happen that I haven’t heard of.
Animals kill things to eat and live. Nature’s beautiful, but there are a lot of bones under the beauty.

My brother’s FiL’s brother (he later bought 25,000 acres up midstate after they sold the ranch for big bucks/acre) was on the horse when it was gored

After that - they used Jeeps and dogs to round up that one herd

I dodged some nasty big Brahma’s moving them around at the Belle Glade auction - buyers need to see them well - a whip is not enough - you need to be fast - like in bullring or rodeo
