I’ve lived in Nome and can tell you two things. It’s not a modern city, and the people who are missing probably got cold, and moved south.

Did a little googling and there is an issue of disproportionate abductions in Nome, especially as to native Americans visiting Nome, a regional center. Some claim there is a serial killer who's never been caught. The FBI looked into it and concluded there's no evidence of that. Many say the real culprit is Nome is a "wet" city unlike other commercial centers in that part of Alaska and if you combine a bender with frigid winter, you get deaths and disappearances.
Oh, and the movie was filmed in Bulgaria. Nome is out on the tundra.
