I tried it out with the surname “Kerry”.

No hits - but of course he was in Cambodia in 1346.

Nothing under my surname (English). My grandmother’s surname (Scottish) showed 39 members. No idea whether they are related, as our family history only goes back to the 1760s.....

Here is a simple quiz to determine if you had an ancestor who served in the hundred year’s war:

1. DO YOU HAVE ANY BRITISH OR FRENCH ANCESTRY?

If yes, you did have ancestors in the 100 years war. In fact, you are descended from most of the soldiers who served in the war on whatever side your ancestry fell.

Assume one new generation every 25 years. (For medieval times, that may be to0 long a time period, but we’re being conservative here.) We would thus have about 27 generations since 1347.

How many ancestors does one have 27 generations back? Two to the 27th power is about 128 million, which is far larger than the population of England and France of the time. The estimation for the entire population of Europe in 1347 was 75 million. About a third of those died in the black plague shortly thereafter.

Of course, you would be descended from some people in multiple ways and others not at all. But the overwhelming odds are that you would be descended from most of the people alive in 1347 from your ancestral country.

Technically the English (the Plantagenet faction) won most or all the multiple wars of the 100 Years War until Joan of Arc turned up. After which the English fortunes waned and we were eventually forced to quit fair France.

Of course if Kerry had been there he would have sold out Joan of Arc and then given evidence to the US Senate about her "murderous rampage, reminiscent of Jengis Khan". And then we would have had to 'SwiftGalley' him.

Let seen I had one hit on the family surname
Rank: Archer
Year: 1401
Nature of Activity: Garrison

Could be a match considering we already trace the family surname back thirteenth generation to an ancestors in Parish of All Hallows County of Kent, England, who died in 1485...

LOL!

Actually, they're behaving nicely - of late.

One of the reasons I find history so fascinating, my (Scandinavian lineage) father stormed in at Normandy with the second wave, perhaps his ancestors did a little looting and plundering there about 1150 years previously?

Found my ancestor, John Hayden, rank: Archer. His captain was Lord Edward Despenser, served in 1375 in France. My records show that he died in 1408.

I didn’t know he was an Archer, nor who his Captain was, etc. Will add that to my records.

Thanks for the heads up.

I have other ancestors I can check for participation!

Interesting. Sixteen matches on surname. Of them 6 had a (popular) first name that appears with my relatives. All were archers but several were “armed archers”. I presume that having arms made them better able to draw the bow. Only a handful were listed for more than one year. One had a single quarter. Another had a year and “sick”.

Thanks for the very intriguing link. I've traced my paternal gfather back to Scotland to the 1550's, and he came from Irleand. Not sure how this English soldier fits in, if at all. But I'm sure he was supremely skilled archer nonetheless!
