Insane: Woman Flashes Around Insurance Claim Money, Gets Robbed
The Business Insider ^ | 10/23/09

Posted on 10/23/2009 1:13:31 PM PDT by FromLori

Why anyone in their right mind would cash an insurance claim check and then go to a bar to flaunt said money is beyond me. But one Springfield, Massachusetts woman is probably wishing she had gone to the bank on the way to the bar:

WWLP: Massachusetts police say they are searching for two men suspected of robbing a woman of $27,000 after she flashed the cash in a Springfield bar.

Sgt. John Delaney said on Friday that the 22-year-old woman was robbed Monday night by two men wearing dark clothing and bandanas, one armed with what appeared to be a semiautomatic handgun.

According to police, the woman bragged in the bar of receiving the $27,000 from an insurance claim. Police say she was later robbed after she left the bar with a male friend.

Delaney said the woman should have put her cash settlement in a bank.

“dollars to donuts”

Even odds, then? Inflation has pretty well ruined that expression.

A fool and his money are soon separated.

My son rents a condo from a young Dr. who won $275K in Vegas a couple months ago. The wife said she wanted the winnings given to them in cash. The casiono manager said that they were equipped to do so; but strongly recommended that they don’t. She asked if she could just ‘touch’ the cash - that was arranged. Then they had the cash just deposited into their account, and kept $5,000 out for ‘mad money’.

While the temptation to have a briefcase with $275K is certainly appealing; getting robbed of it, or getting killed for it is simply stupid. But, upon hearing how they got comp’d to a Penthouse, best seats to the hottest show on the strip, and a $5K allowance to the Luxor’s high roller’s resturant for them and their friends - it must have been one heck of a trip.

Of course, this will NEVER happen to me; but I do enjoy meeting people who did luck out in this manner.

Where in the world, other than at a bank, could one cash a $27,000 check? I seriously doubt that any local check-cashing store would be willing (or even able) to cash a check for that large an amount.

I’ve always wanted to go into a car dealership with cash - and I mean Corvette, not Kia.

Because I am a cynical person I have to ask 1) since she was robbed does she still have to pay the taxes on this money 2) if not, could this be a scam to avoid paying taxes 3) the lady is an idiot.

My son said that they drove their Surburban back. I’m sure that they drove those 6 hours grinning like a dung-beetle. I know I would.

IRS? Take your chunk now, please.

Bills? Good-bye.

Hello, Boss? ... I need to take some time off, I’ll be back in a couple weeks.

Time for a nice long cruise, a new car and save the rest.

First...I guess it would depend what the settlement was regarding. See above link for when a settlement/court decision is taxable. If it was taxable...then I have no idea what happens...but you do bring up a real good/interesting idea.

I have a feeling she would not have had that money much longer anyway. I would have gave her a week to blow through it.

Its true what they say..... If you give all the rich people’s money to the poor people, the rich would have it back in 6 months.

In 2005, when my wife & I bought our van, another couple bought a Jeep wrangler with a brown paper sack full of cash. The manager at the dealership locked himself in the office for 20 minutes to count the money.
