Word For The Day, Tuesday, 10/20/09

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

umbrage; noun

1. offense; annoyance; displeasure: to feel umbrage at a social snub; to give umbrage to someone; to take umbrage at someone's rudeness. 2. the slightest indication or vaguest feeling of suspicion, doubt, hostility, or the like. 3. leaves that afford shade, as the foliage of trees. 4. shade or shadows, as cast by trees. 5. a shadowy appearance or semblance of something.

Etymology: Origin: 1400–50; late ME < OF; see umbra, -age

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

TOPICS: Word For The Day
KEYWORDS:

the soother is sicky, which is kind of dang WIMPY unless he has full bore swines. it’s a sign of sloth, not consideration to skip WFTD school, considering we aren’t REALLY passing germs around in here... ; )

After reading reviews of many who took umbrage at the unclaimed baggage center in Alabama, we decided not to go. Mini-bowling it is!

ROR!!! Too funny.

I am once again taking umbrage with the danged weatherman.......we were fully OUTSIDE the frost warning zone for overnight, yet this morning EVERYTHING was covered in frost.

I will say I did feel for the poor guy. I saw his forecast during the morning news, which starts at 5am, he was on again at noon, then during the 5-6:30 newscast, and finally the 11pm. This station has 4 weather people, why they had the poor guy do all of those newscasts in one day is totally beyond me.

Interesting, because according to the map you were in the warning area, but I wasn’t. The frost took out the last of my tomatoes, and that is why I’m so torqued. I still HAD plenty left. I would would have covered them had I thought the temp was going to drop so much, but I really had no clue. Overnight low was supposed to be in the upper 40s, not mid 30s.

i am pretty sure we didn’t get below the low 40s. it’s going to be 70 today and a low of 49 tonight. the map doesn’t sound remotely accurate.

Agreed.

It's supposed to be in the 70s here as well, and while it is a gorgeous sunny day, it's still only 55.

The actress chosen to portray her was not remotely close how I had pictured the character. I saw her more as a Helen Thomas look-a-like(please, no pictures).

Home for lunch-

Obama’s lack of patience
Is almost like his skin-
Every time they are tested
They wear a little thin

Constantly taking umbrage
And doing things despotic
Some psychiatrists are saying
He may be going psychotic

He won’t listen to generals
And his critics can’t get near-
With fingers firmly in his ears
He just refuses to hear

“evil at every turn.”

My only comfort is that people appear to be waking up and getting pissed in droves at last-it looks like the patience of America with the Carter wannabe is wearing thin. Still, building a bunker is looking like an attractive idea...

but is it too late? is he even concerned about his plunging poll #s? they are going to use the next year to RAM THROUGH every possible bit of socialism that they can before that next election. The war on Fox, the FCC internet rules, etc. really makes it seem that it is full out war.

I don’t think it is too late, but the longer people drag their feet on firing/impeaching him, the uglier the thing could get-more like Richard Nixon, who resigned under threats of criminal charges and jail time, and less like Clinton, which was a softball impeachment not even followed through with.

I'm sorry, but I have to take umbrage with the dingbats that inhabit NoVA..........

Man arrested for making coffee naked

A Virginia man said he is fighting the indecent exposure charge brought against him after he was spotted making coffee naked in his kitchen.

What I want to know is 1) why was this woman walking the streets at 5:30am with a 7yo, and 2) why was she charged under peeping tom type statutes?

I have less problem with her out walking on the street with the kid at 5:30 am. She may have been taking him to a babysitter’s house on her way to a job. But someone being charged for conduct in their home is ridic unless he was naked in his picture window, putting on a dang show.

I’m still wondering why she wasn’t charged with at least trespassing, since it appears she was using HIS yard as a shortcut to where ever it was that she was going.

It is definitely ridic. Heck I can think of more than one occasion I traipsed thru the house buck nekid, while home alone, to either get something out of the dryer or a cup of coffee and the only 2 rooms in my house that do not have at least one window facing a road are the dining room and bathroom.
