Apple today announced financial results for its fiscal 2009 fourth quarter ended September 26, 2009. The Company posted revenue of $9.87 billion and a net quarterly profit of $1.67 billion, or $1.82 per diluted share. These results compare to revenue of $7.9 billion and net quarterly profit of $1.14 billion, or $1.26 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 36.6 percent, up from 34.7 percent in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 46 percent of the quarter’s revenue.

Analysts consensus' expectations called for EPS of $1.42 on $9.2 billion revenue.

In accordance with the subscription accounting treatment required by GAAP, the Company recognizes revenue and cost of goods sold for iPhone and Apple TV over their estimated economic lives. Adjusting GAAP sales and product costs to eliminate the impact of subscription accounting, the corresponding non-GAAP measures for the quarter are $12.25 billion of "Adjusted Sales" and $2.85 billion of "Adjusted Net Income."

Apple sold 3.05 million Macintosh computers during the quarter, representing a 17% unit increase over the year-ago quarter. The Company sold 10.2 million iPods during the quarter, representing an 8% unit decline from the year-ago quarter. Apple sold 7.4 million iPhones in the quarter, representing 7% unit growth over the year-ago quarter.

“We are thrilled to have sold more Macs and iPhones than in any previous quarter,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO, in the press release. “We’ve got a very strong lineup for the holiday season and some really great new products in the pipeline for 2010.”

“We are delighted with our September quarter and fiscal 2009 results,” said Peter Oppenheimer, Apple’s CFO, in the press release. “For the full year, we grew revenue by 12 percent and net income by 18 percent in extraordinarily challenging times. Looking ahead to the first fiscal quarter of 2010, we expect revenue in the range of about $11.3 billion to $11.6 billion and we expect diluted earnings per share in the range of about $1.70 to $1.78.”

UPDATE, 4:48pm EDT: In after-hours trading, Apple is currently up $16.07, ot 8.55% to $204.12.

Maybe the will come through and say “just wait ‘till next quarter.”

Shouldn’t be long now, along with the “Android will kill the iPhone,” “Zune will kill the iPod,” “Los Hermanos Psystar will crush Apple” and “Windows 7 will crush Apple” people.

I wonder if the many Mac haters will show up on this thread.

Let me preempt them: Apple makes way too much money with their liberal hype of an over rated product. They should just license the software for everyone to use.

There!

Oh yeah, I forgot. The people who buy their stock are just greedy gays!

I switched from an iPhone to a Blackberry when we switched from AT&T to T-Mobile. I didn’t miss it quite as much as I thought I would. I do miss having the big touch screen though. I’m planning on pulling the trigger on an Android or N900 soon. Just can’t decide which way to go.

If T-Mobile were to get the iPhone I would jump to it immediately though.

Dennis, where is the losing quarter you so confidently predicted Apple would experience within 12 months. You said it would happen within a year? You've not got much time left before your crow dinner. Let me remind you what you prognosticated back in December of 2008:

To: Star Traveler

Cash reserve or not.....

If the current downturn continues its trajectory I predict Apple will post loses with 12 months

Psst - if you unlock your iPhone, you can use it on Tmobile.

That is true, but it won’t work on 3G. Which when I’m in a 3G area I would like to be able to use.

I don’t know about any other limitations, but I do know that one. In the past I don’t think visual voicemail would work either, but now that T-Mobile supports it on other phones maybe it would work on an unlocked iPhone.

How can you be greedy when Apple hasn't paid out a dividend since 1995? 14 years ago.

It does work on TMobile’s 3G.

VVM doesn’t work because TMobile’s systems don’t support the iPhone’s setup (last I heard).

Of course I was talking tongue-in-cheek but owning stock that continues to go up dramatically is a good way to make money - hence the greedy comment.

Don’t phones need the 1700 band to work on T-Mobile’s 3G? That was my understanding. I know they have half of their service in 2100 which the iPhone does support, but I would think both bands would be pretty key.

If the current downturn continues its trajectory.....

The stock market is way up from back then. People took their 0bama-bucks and bought an overpriced Apple computer to feel good about themselves. They can’t afford a new BMW but can afford to buy an expensive Apple whatever for a cheap ego boost

“I wonder if the many Mac haters will show up on this thread.”

Please don’t write off all queries as hateful. Good for Apple that they are doing so well.

A serious question: Where are people getting money to buy Apple stuff with, given the economic hard times we’ve been hearing about?

Right now, my Toshiba is running Leopard 10.5.8 so that I can post this. When I want to run one of my Windows programs, I will reboot the computer and run Windows 7. (I have a Steve Balmer-signed Ultimate edition installed.) Both are great OS’s. I hated Vista, and downgraded to WinXP on all my computers that had Vista. I have been running Win7 since the beta version came out early this year. It is fantastic. And Leopard it very good too, but there are a lot fewer applications and they are more expensive. It’s like the reverse of the Palm Pre/iPhone debate.

A serious question: Where are people getting money to buy Apple stuff with, given the economic hard times we’ve been hearing about?

Even during the Great Depression, sales of quality radio sets, automobiles and clothing remained strong. While people had less money, they wanted to ensure that what purchases they did make were quality purchases.

When my wife and I first got married, we were not that well off and we were criticized at the time for spending what little money we had on expensive, high quality furniture. I remember saying at the time "We can't afford NOT to buy quality." Well 20+ years later, our original furniture still looks like new while others have had to replace their cheaper furniture several times over.

When money is tight, you are better off focusing on quality as opposed to quantity.
