Word For The Monday, 10/19/09, Date

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

palimpsest; noun

1. A manuscript, typically of papyrus or parchment, that has been written on more than once, with the earlier writing incompletely erased and often legible. 2. An object, place, or area that reflects its history: "Spaniards in the sixteenth century . . . saw an ocean moving south . . . through a palimpsest of bayous and distributary streams in forested paludal basins" (John McPhee).

Etymology: [Latin palimpsēstum, from Greek palimpsēston, neuter of palimpsēstos, scraped again : palin, again; see kwel-1 in Indo-European roots + psēn, to scrape.]

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

It's Fall and there's a chill in the air. That means it's time for Mrs. Lovett's Meat Pies

I pulled out the palimpsest of Harrod's Cookery Book and followed the 120 year old recipe using the 60 year old set of pastry tools that were Grandma Moore's. Here are the results:

And Vast, I used some of my saved bacon drippings in the crust. Yum!

A rare Obama palimpsest, written on the back of an envelope on the way to a political event, indicates that the original text of his speech was, “Read the teleprompter.”

Thanks. They are. I usually serve slices warm with beef gravy over them. It’s a major production to make them, though. Preparing the filling and crust takes about an hour and a half and they slow bake for 2 hours and 40 minutes.

Isn’t that always the way? You spend hours upon hours in the kitchen, and then it is eaten in record time :)

We went to a lecture on local history studying old cemeteries here last month and learned some interesting tidbits. They use sidewalk chalk to help illuminate and discern the writing on the palimpsests known as headstones. It doesn’t cause any damage and really makes them easier to read.

Thanks. I had to do something to brighten the kitchen. The floors are dark wood, and the previous countertops were dark, as were the appliances. I added the new countertops and got stainless appliances and shelving in 2007.

Yes I am. Mine is a Smith's Edgeware Diamond. It was a finalist in the 2009 Housewares Design awards and also was in the Hammacker-Schlemmler catalog.

Shop around for prices. I believe I paid about $99 for mine. Metrokitchen has it for $129.

The palimpsest reads a democrat win here, but I am rooting for the underdog conservative. I hear Lindsey Graham and his ilk sent money to the pro-abortion, gay Republican candidate. This just exemplifies the inherent problems of a state that embraced Hillary Clinton and for six months out of each year is an ice covered tundra with snow pouring out of the skies.

Did anyone see, this area made it to Fox News over the weekend -- we spotted a piece on the snow in Binghamton.

The plank that allows
all my stuff here to rest
the substrate of layers
that make up a nest

the only solution, should something go missin’
is recounting the instant of its deposition
then trace the strata to find it’s location then
extract it, not touching the stuff that it isn’t

tactics, precision, a measure of guile,
is fully required to manage this pile
Don’t search unaided, seek my help, lest
you derange and obscure it— this pile-impsest

Of course, the dnc and our favorite RINO squads are determined to destroy her for that very reason.
