Roland Emmerich still game for Stargate sequel film?
SciFi Wire ^ | 10/13/09

Posted on 10/13/2009 6:07:08 PM PDT by KevinDavis

Given the complex mythology built up around Stargate SG-1, Atlantis and now Stargate Universe, it's easy to forget that the whole thing started in 1994 with director Roland Emmerich's movie, starring Kurt Russell as Jack O'Neill and James Spader as Daniel Jackson.

In the years since, Devlin has told us that he still wants to produce the two sequels he and Emmerich always envisioned, and Emmerich told us over the weekend that he's also game, though that means overcoming some rights issues and his natural aversion to doing sequels.

"Whew, it's a tough one," Emmerich told us in an exclusive interview in Jackson Hole, Wyo. "I mean, I constantly keep talking about it with Dean, too. I mean, we also keep talking about an Independence Day sequel, but it's just, like, such a ... tough thing to do in these days."

In 2006, Devlin told us: "We would just continue the mythology of the movie and finish that out. I think the series could still live at the end of the third sequel. So we're going to try to not tread on their stories."

"When we created the original Stargate, we always envisioned it as a trilogy, and, unfortunately, the way in which the movie got made, we didn't really have control over [it]," Devlin added. "I think it will be very exciting to actually get to go do parts two and three."

Last Friday, Emmerich said: "It was probably good that we never did these sequels, because it forced us always to do something new. ... In general, I'm not a big fan of sequels. I'm just not a big fan of sequels. Because it's very rare that a sequel really works for me. Like, for instance, Aliens was a great sequel. But most of the time they're kind of a lesser version of the first one."

Another consideration: Russell is now 58 and Spader is a rotund 49 (as anyone who's seen him on Boston Legal can attest), and that may be a bit long in the tooth.

Not to say they couldn't recast, though, and it would be fascinating to see how Emmerich and Devlin's Stargate mythology would have diverged from the elaborate universe we've seen developed in the TV shows.

Sorry I don't think a Stargate sequel would work.. Especially with SG1/SGA/SGU ... For the record I like SGU...

Let the whole thing die. I hated SGU. Worst. Premiere. Ever. Sucked worse than a Cat V hurricane.

SGU has an interesting concept. A prequel may be interesting for this series, maybe remove some of the stranger stuff (like Merlin, etc) that the series fell off the cliff with and have some sort of origins film?

And apparently easy to forget Russell didn't play Jack O'Neill. He played Jack O'Neil, a totally different Colonel (with no sense of humor)

Did you noticed that 2 more expendables were wiped off the SGU passenger manifesto last week?

Not a sequel but its own stand-alone story. That could work.

The thing kinda ruined the Stargate experience was the lack exploring to different planets with different cultures.. Later on with SG1 and SGA they all showed up on planets with people who happened to have renaissance civilizations in both galaxies.. So far SGU is going away from that.

Maybe a movie could be based on SG-22 or something, studying a world that was thought safe and empty.

Nothing against MacGuyver, but I always liked Russell’s take on the role. If they are thinking of doing a sequel without him, then I hope they make altogether new characters instead of trying to recast the role. I just can’t see any of the younger actors today doing a decent enough impression to make it work.

Joshua Brack took the folded up paper from his pocket and unfolded it to a full twelve by twelve square. He touched the paper with the ring on his right pointer finger and the paper came alive. It was a computer and he moved his finger along the top of it to input certain commands.

The computer had already downloaded all of the locally available news feeds and he cut the link. Then he began to study some of the latest developments, looking for the key.

What would it be this time? A name, a place, an event that triggered the decryption codex in his mind. It was always something different. Somewhere in the data he had downloaded through his hack was...

A photo. A photo of a woman that was identified as the Martian Assistant Attorney General, he stared. He could feel his mind unraveling the codex data. He could see the words coming together overlaid onto the image.

His mission this time, on this world, in this time was to murder her. To kill the entire government of the Republic of Mars, he guessed this would presage an invasion. Martian resources had been invested into planetary defense systems, they would never expect their downfall was already below their feet.

Joshua Brack closed the paper computer and put it back into his coat pocket. Its memory erased, no trace of anything would be left behind, its pass encryption already changed.

It meant nothing to him. His last mission had been to brutally snuff out the African Liberty Renaissance. The rise of Africa had been deemed a threat to the World Order and he felt nothing as he plunged the continent back into the stone-age.

That had been a month ago for Joshua and a decade ago for Earth....

The second episode did not have the flashbacks, thank God. It did have people using the stones to inhabit people back on Earth so they can talk to them. Really violates the laws of physics but its scifi for crying out loud.

If they were doing an unknown off-world team, I'd vote for Adam Baldwin to revive whatever the hell character he had, just because I wouldn't mind seeing him in another SF movie with a big gun in his hand.

Battlestargate. No thanks to SGU.

This approximates my reaction to SGU so far. If I want to watch tedious people making one stupid decision after another, I'll watch C-SPAN, thank you very much.

The Ancient stones are an established part of Stargate Lore:

1. Joe Spencer accidentally used one to learn about SG1’s exploits in Season 8.

2. Daniel Jackson and Vala Mal Doran also used them to make contact with the Ori.

“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.”

However if they were smart they would use the stones to let Rodney McKay have a look at the ship. He may be insufferable, but he knows a heck of a lot more about Ancient technology that the basket case they have aboard now.

I was sorely disappointed with the original Stargate. With an entire universe of storylines available we got another stupid “fighting the barbarians” plot. The TV show was better than the movie, but it’s run it’s course and should be buried. Please not another never-ending Hollywood franchise like Star Trek. Just let it go.

On the other hand, as a Bad Movie buff I have found Emmerich’s crap to be the most consistently hilarious fare with “The Day After Tomorrow” topping the list. So anything he does will likely be entertaining to me... just not in the way he’d want.

Nah. It’s better to let it go. The horse is dead.

No, no, no. Stargate was the one Emmerich/Devlin movie that didn't suck rocks. Do not make a sequel. We know what that means: Bigger, louder, more IQ-reducing explosions.

You already hit your nadir with The Day After Tomorrow. Don't tempt fate further.

Sincerely,

The People

In truth neither the original movie, nor the television versions ever did a thing for me. But yes they got it right with Kurt. If you are going to trust a commander with a backpack nuke as the last chance to save Earth from unknown dangers regardless of the possible cost to him and his command, you’ll select a SOB who is unlikely to get cute with his orders. That rang true.

I'm assuming that it was pre-Firefly. He led an off-world team. Don't remember the rank. But it would be a good excuse to get him in a film.

Athena/Boomer from BSG is another one.

Let MacGuyver keep his widdle Stargate character. There's only one guy for the role whom I'd trust to save my ass while he saves his own, and it ain't Jack:

It has been so long since the origanal movie came out that it would be diffcult to do with the same personal. They could go alot of different ways that has nothing to do with the spinoff shows but hollywood has become so PC about everything it does it is almost meaningless for them to make movies anymore. For me it has been a while since I have seen a movie and wanted to go back to watch it again. Hollywood has been boring the crap out of me for the last few years.
