Quite a memory for the Giants. Swept in four.
I thought the earthquake hit on October 17th, 1989, but then I got that date from Wikipedia and the USGS websites.
It was October 17.
It was October 17. I was driving home from having my birthday dinner with my parents. I went into the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel, and when I came out and got radio reception again, the news was going nuts with the earthquake.
I was on my way from from work, heading to Marin from Oakland and was about 5 minutes from the Cypress structure (lower deck Northbound) when it hit.
It took about 4 hours to get home thru the back streets of Oakland and San Pablo Blvd. and the slow crawl over the Richmond-San Rafael bridge was a bit nerve wracking.
I was in Candlestick. What a ride.
October 17th at 5:17 PM. I was walking down Bryant Street after work when it hit. Just a few seconds of shaking. The brick facades of several buildings on our block collapsed into the street, one of which crushed five people in their cars.
Okay, I asked the headline to be changed. Sorry.
Oct. 17. Admin Mod has been asked to correct it. Thanks, all.
No worries ;>), I remember watching the TV coverage scary images to be sure.
I was stationed at Ft Ord at the time and living in an apartment in Marina. I just got off duty and was butt naked with my hand on the shower knob when it hit. I thought the noise was my neighbors until it really started shaking. Threw on my robe and flip flops and out the door with stuff falling down around me. After a bit, I went back in and picked up. Went to the field for 45 days the next morning. That’s my earthquake story.
