Jindal the Genuine
JWB

Posted on 10/08/2009 7:29:52 AM PDT by jwb0581

This past Sunday, I was in the small town (population: 12,000) of Eunice, Louisiana with my wife visiting with her parents. We went to church and to our surprise, Governor Bobby Jindal was slated to speak. Why were we surprised? Well, the church (Christian non-denominational) has an average attendance of only about 50 each Sunday. Surely the Governor has bigger fish to fry than speaking to a group of 50 small town folks, right?

But, there he was. I was able to shake hands with him and we discussed the weather. He kept thanking us for having him. Could not have been more genuine. I told him I was a big fan of his for a long time. When I said that, I looked in his eyes and I could tell it meant something to him.

He spoke for about 75 minutes about his life story and his conversion to Christian faith. It was genuine and real. There were no cameras. He wasn't speaking to a room full of rich and powerful. He wasn't asking for money. There was no build up or fanfare around town. The visit was unannounced. There were only about 50 people in the room, same as every Sunday.

Highlight of the talk? When he remarked that "there are many things I fear my children will be exposed to in school, but prayer isn't one of them" in reference to a recent court decision banning prayer before school board meetings because "children might be exposed" to prayer.

Anyway, it was refreshing to see. I can only hope and pray that Governor Jindal remains so grounded as he ponders running for national office in the future.

Just from the little I’ve seen of Jindal, he appears to be the genuine sort of person and the kind of politician we need.

A few weeks ago a thread on Jindal coming out as a RINO as he suggested we work with OBOZO on his health care takeover.

Thanks, but a big NO THANKS!

Is there some law prohibiting Christians from a “high-church” liturgical tradition visiting with and speaking to Christians from a “low-church” evangelical or charismatic tradition?

Good title for this post. I like Bobby Jindahl. He is the real deal, no fanfare, no entourage, no hype. Intelligent, articulate, brilliant. He is the genuine article. He will have a leadership role in the years to come. Louisian is fortunate to have him.

I’ve heard the RINO-Jindal grumblings before, and honestly, I haven’t been able to keep up with Jindal like I used to, so maybe they’re right.

I can only hope that these grumblings are people taking him out of context with an agenda to bring him down a notch, because it would be a tragedy if Jindal turns out to not be all that conservative.

Jindal is a RINO who says that we need to stop opposing 0bama and find a way to work with him.

Pass.

He is also ineligible for president, because he is not a natural born citizen. Not that that matters though.

He shall not have my support.

That may indeed be true.

He is also ineligible for president, because he is not a natural born citizen.

This is not true. This is from the wiki article on Jindal:

"Piyush Jindal was born on June 10, 1971 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to Agarwal Indian immigrants Amar and Raj Jindal, who had recently arrived for Amar to attend graduate school at Louisiana State University.[1] "
That's "Native Born Citizen", no two ways about it.

That’s native born if being born on american soil is the criteria. But is it a “natural born citizen” as specified in the Constitution? Does the parents citizenship matter or not?

Nope. Even if his parents were here illegally (which they were not) he'd be an NBC if born on U.S. soil. In Jindal's case his folks were in the U.S. quite properly after getting accepted to LSU, and acquiring all proper visas to accomplish their stay.

If this were otherwise, we'd have an awful mess with everyone needing to check exactly when their immigrant parents got their citizenship w.r.t. their own birthdate. In this situation, then if being a citizen depended on your parents citizenship status, then your own kids might have a citizenship problem, too!

No, far better to say that if you're born here, you're one of us (which is the law). Maybe add in the rider that this be the case only if your parents are here legally, but that's it.

Hell Edwin Edwards use to go the the annual Pentecostal Conference in LA every year when he was running for election, sit upon the rostrum during part of the service, speak to them for a while, donate a $1000 dollars to their offering, etc.

Where does the Constitution define "natural born citizen"?

If the question ever gets before the Supreme Court, look for them to go with the common-sense definition: citizen at birth. Any other definition would have to be based on obscure dicta and would appear contrived to justify an outcome.

Natural born citizen has not been defined by the Supreme Court. Some take the decision in Wong Kim Ark, where children of legal resident aliens were only found to be citizens as proof that if the SC is faced with this question they will find it to be a higher standard. They also say that the Framers were using Vattel’s definition of NBC which requires two citizen parents.

Personally, I can’t see the SC being willing to use a definition that would create a constitutional crisis. If they ever answer the question, which seems unlikely since so far none of the cases seem to be aimed at that question and/or none of the cases can survive a motion to dismiss for lack of standing/justiciability. The alternative, that birth on US soil grants NBC status has enough support that they would go with it if for no other reason than to keep order.

Read the wiki article on acquiring citizenship, the references in the wiki page point to the actual government documents which reference the appropriate U.S. law codes.

Look people, I want to get to the bottom of the Obama NBC mess just like you. But I also know that you have to get the fundamentals of the law right, or else we'll look like imbeciles to the rest of the world.

You tried to indirectly conflate anchorbaby with natural born citizen status. What kind of conservative/supporter of the Constitution tries to claim just being born on American soil even if parents aren’t citizens (and you liar, you even included parents as illegals) are natural born citizens. You got called on it and now want to dissemble your idiocy. The law does not make a child of an illegal alien a natural born citizen. ... And you tell me to back off. Riiiight. Your ilk are taking over Freerepublic.

Yeah, the mod can ban me, but where is Freerepublic going as it is corroded by these pernicious posters?

I too have had the pleasure of speaking with Gov. Jindal one-on-one. Also observed him speaking with other people at the small gathering at the gun dept. of a local sporting goods store.

What struck me more than anything else is that, when you are having a conversation with Gov. Jindal, you have his undivided attention. He looks you right in the eye and listens to each and every word that you say. He is not looking over your shoulder to see who else is in the room, or rushing you to finish your comments or question so that he can move on.

The other thing that was so refreshing is that if someone asks him a question -- if he doesn't know the answer he says exactly that. He offers to find out and get back with the questioner. I witnessed a very nervous young reporter from an obscure little town newspaper ask Gov. Jindal about a water issue in the area of this small town. I had never heard of the issue either. Gov. Jindal did not hesitate to acknowledge that he was unaware of the problem, but he called a staffer over immediately and notes were taken.

Jindal is a genuine guy, a good man, and works hard as governor. Do I agree with every thought in his head? No. Will I support him without hesitation? Absolutely. Bobby Jindal is a gem.

Wikipedia is definitely the historical record I would like to see determine the fate of our nation. /s

As has been explained ad nauseum, if simple native born citizens could be eligible to the office of president, then any enemy of the US (i.e. Kim Jong Il, Achmedinejad, Gadaffi, Chavez, etc.) could move to the US, spawn an anchor critter, then raise that critter to become president, and destroy the nation from within.

Pretty much defines exactly what is happening right now.

Any other definition (particularly the 'two-citizen-parent' definition) would also be in conflict with two centuries of electoral precedent. There's no shortage of Presidential and Vice-Presidential candidates who were the children of immigrants (Ralph Nader, Bill Richardson, Michael Dukakis, Arlen Specter, Hubert Humphrey, etc.), who didn't find themselves confronted with any questions about their parents' U.S. citizenship at the times of their births.

In fact, to single out one particular example, Vice President Spiro Agnew was the son of Greek immigrants. And according to the 1920 census, they were still aliens when Spiro was a year old.

I'm too young to remember the Nixon Presidency myself, but I can't say I've ever heard of anyone questioning or disputing Agnew's eligibility or citizenship status.
