the fat girl

I always thought the most unattractive thing about her was her freckles, which I associated with the malignancies affecting my younger brother, but most others in my high school class saw that she was fat, something I myself did not overlook, but minimized because of the freckles seemed a greater affliction.

I never knew the fat girl very well, if at all. The fat girl was from the south side of town, Old Families and Old Money, with its own grade school, while I was from the north side of the town, New Families and New Money, and a nouveau "progressive" elementary school.

And then when both sides of the Sandhills town of circa 3,000 were united in junior high school, I was in grades 7A and 8A, while she was in grades 7C and 8C. There were three classes of 7th- and 8th-graders (including 7B and 8B), where one was placed based upon ostensible intelligence. But in retrospect, perhaps the fat girl was not, really, stupid.

And then through all four years of high school, I do not recall that I ever had a class that included the fat girl. She always remained an ambiguous blur, and while I was a callow, shallow lad who could be rude and insolent much of the time, I never saw anything in her that excited my interest.

The story “drew me in”... even though it wasn’t pleasant.

You’re a good writer.

I read it three times and still can’t figure out what the point of that story is.

Moral of the story ? Fat girls need to get laid or they go squirrelly in the 7-11.

A rambling narrative that takes us nowhere. What was the point of it? Was it to get in some tangential digs at Ronald Reagan? A narrative or a story must have a purpose and a point; it must take us somewhere, and make us think, or feel some emotion. This drivel did nothing, as it said nothing.

I do not know why it was posted on FR.

Ending is anti-climatic and somewhat, well not pointess, but ambiguous perhaps.

OK, so here is a synopsis of this story. This girl is fat and ugly in school and gets no dates. Then, the writer meets her some years later, she is not only still fat and ugly and gets no dates, but also loony.

As for the moral of the story, you are spot on.

My school had an odd kid with freckles who smelled of a mixture of camphor and sea bass. That kid went on to become Hermann Goering.

It really is a strange world, isn’t it?
