[Pictures taken of the Spanish prime minister with his wife and daughters alongside Michelle and Barack Obama have caused a stir, not least because the teenagers look like goths]

The official photos, taken at the Museum of Modern Art where the Obamas were hosting a dinner, were uploaded onto the U.S. state department's Flickr page.
Unlike the Obamas, Spanish prime minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero has always tried to keep his daughters, Laura, 16, and Alba, 13, out of the public eye.

oh Lord. These girls look awful! I don’t care if you are a goth look or not. This attire considering the occasion is way off the mark. One can do goth and still look formal and lovely (for a goth look, which I am not into really). A lovely black dress with black ballet flats at a minimum would have been flattering. Skip the metal wrist bands. Uck!

The whole goth thing is about shocking right? Why bring them? I know they are most likely trying to be supportive and ‘understanding,’ but they need to teach the children to respect the parents’ needs and expectations as well. They can always change into their goth world afterward if the parents are that tolerant. No wonder the parents hide them. They have a real problem at home and are trying to hide that.

yes. I agree about Michelle. She looks fantastic here. Now if we could just get her to apply this working formula more often, she would be a fashionable first lady no matter what her politics or personality.

I held back from making a comment to the effect that the Prime Minister was right to keep them out of the public eye, out of a desire not to be cruel. I see I was needlessly concerned.
So, “keep them out of the public eye”, and rightly so. The blonde really needs to work on her posture, and the blackhaired one is standing as though they let her out just for the photograph, and she’s nervous around other people.
I’ll bet they weigh more than a duck!!!

When goths were big, when I was younger and I hung in the music world in which this style was rampant, I would often wear white (being a very feminine, natural blond with very blond hair this really got their hateful goat, which of course I loved!)
I often went as formal as possible with all the girly touches (not over the top of course--LOL). When I went into the restrooms they often hissed at me. I just smiled at them. Often laughing. Once I even thought I'd scare a couple of them and said, "watch out girls. You never know I may just be carrying a pretty big gun, in this lovely little purse." and walked out tossing my long blond locks. LOL.
The only thing that is strange about this picture is the “The Long Legged Mack Daddy the Zebra” allowed ANYONE else beside HIMSELF to be included without HIM being the center of attention.

She one looks thinner because her sides are cut off. She looks like her dress is more attractive that it actually looks to be on closer examination. (I actually projected a sheath dress with a pashima type wrap draped tightly across the front beneath her chin that mostly likely came together in the back. Had Michelle been wearing that outfit with this same color and the wonderfully colored and pointed shoes she has on, I would have to reconfirm she looks fantastic. As is she needs to hire a new designer. Preferably someone with a classic style that takes risks and really works the wonderful choices of color that she can wear as she is so dark. Her hair is close to nice, but is greased down just a tad too much.
However she looks much better as you mentioned. It is sad. She could really look sharp, especially if she lost some weight.

“Goth” is appropriate. Wasn’t it the decendents of the Goths who got run out of Spain by the muslims? Zapatero is taking Spain in that same direction.
