PARIS, Sept 27 (Reuters) - France's political elite rallied to the defence of Roman Polanski on Sunday, calling on Switzerland to free the 76-year-old film director rather than extradite him to the United States. Artists and film makers also urged the release of Polanski, who faces charges of having sex with a girl of 13 in 1977, accusing Switzerland of being overzealous in pursuing the case.

Polanski was due to receive a prize for his life's work at the Zurich Film Festival on Sunday, but was arrested on a 1978 U.S. arrest warrant after arriving in Switzerland on Saturday....

The Swiss are under a lot of heat from the US IRS to open all those numbered accounts in the banks. They probably feel that tossing them Polanski will lessen the heat from the USA.

Polanski was convicted and admitted subsequently that he had done it. He has avoided serving his prison time for decades, all while continuing to openly live in France, travel the world and make Oscar winning films. May he rot in prison for the rest of his life.

Not to condone, but it was a seduction scenario. The girl was allowed to be alone in his home by her parent (at least her mother) for nude photography. In those days he liked young girls, i.e. Nastassja Kinski - Tess of the D’Urbervilles for one.

It reminds me of Bobby Fischer being hauled in in Japan and Iceland had to harbor him.

We’ll see how this pans out. I think the Swiss are working a trade: Polanski’s hide for lessening the IRS scrutiny in their banks (rich Yanks and others hiding their money over there in numbered accounts).

Now wait a minute, nosing around Switzerland for taxes isn’t exactly “sucking up” to them :-)

Do I correctly assume this was a recent change in Switzerland’s foreign policy, and one which happened unbeknownst to Polanski? Had Polanski ever been before in Switzerland since this affair?

This is precisely why I loathe with an intensity that goes into hatred when I think of the Hollywood filth and the things they do and get away with. I don’t give a rat’s arse if they think he’s an artist, he raped a CHILD and got away with it and then Hollywood thumbs their fingers in our faces by awarding him and praising his ‘art.’

Rape is rape and the law has no business stopping when it hits Hollywood. These people openly flout the law and get away with it. If Polanski raped Mitterand’s daughter I think Mitterand would be the first to scream for the law to take it’s course, or he would lynch Polanski himself!

The Hollywood filth has gotten away for too much for too long and if this is Switzerland’s way of protecting the wealthy elite of this country, good.

OK. I don’t condone him at all (as stated). Thanks for the clarification. They hauled an even older guy out of Ohio to stand trial in Germany for being a concentration camp guard. (Demjanjuk - 89 or 90). In any event, what is good for the goose is good for the gander. I was also amused at the cravenness of the Swiss. They are not doing this out of a sense of justice, but to eke some break out of the American IRS.

In addition to an horrific crime against a child this dirtbag also fled to avoid prosecution. He needs to follow Susan Atkins.

The story first linked on Drudge said that Polanski often vacationed in Switzerland. And they never did this before.

I would agree that this is some kind of political act. But I’m not so sure how pleased Obama will be. It’s a dirty business, but it won’t necessarily earn him brownie points with the sodomizing, free-sex Hollywood crowd that loves him so much if he steps up and takes credit.

Do we really want to extradite him? He'll probably walk, or get a slap on the wrist. I would rather him never set foot in the United States again, than either of those two scenarios.

I thought I read a few years ago that the victim was no longer cooperating in the charges.

I’d rather say it’s because we have time limitation for prosecuting any crime (except war crimes and genocide).

For example - in Poland the time to prosecute for most serious crimes (including murder) is 40 years.
For rape, or child molesting it’s 25 years.

We have a limit too but it doesn’t apply if you flee the juridiction to avoid prosecution. In fact that is a crime in itself.

Vive La Suisse!!! This MADE my day for BOTH reasons!! I am pro-Swiss bank secrecy and anti-molesting young teens!!!!!

I have enjoyed some of Polanski’s work but what he did was WRONG WRONG WRONG. And the woman who was the child molested by him has finally come out from under Hollywood pressure to realize the wrong done to her. Sometimes it takes having a child yourself before you realize how bad some adults are.

In the USA, the statute of limitations does not toll (run out its time) while the accused is out of the jurisdiction in which the accusation was brought. I do not know what, e.g., Poland’s policy is.

There is a kink in the bank secrecy issue. It seems that Swiss banks have branches in the USA through which the “secret” accounts can be accessed. Well guess what, this presence means the banks can be legally forced to open their books on these accounts for fishing expeditions. Unless Switzerland wants to close all the US branches of its banks, it has to deal with this.

I forgot about this.

Do you realize that she lied, poor thing, to get away from him, saying she had asthma in the hot tub?

She could easily have HAD bad asthma in the hot tub.

And what did our hero filmmaker do? He gave her 1/2 a QUAALUDE, telling her it would HELP HER ASTHMA. This is after 4 or 5 glasses of champagne that he made her drink when she was thirsty.

He could have KILLED her.

What would have happened then? Worse than the many forms of penetration he forced on a drunk, drugged CHILD.

Sorry, Polanski. Justice is justice.

Notice the way they word it: having sex with a girl of 13, raping a girl of 13 was the charge, even consensual would have been statutory rape and from her story it wasn't consensual.

As I said above - in Poland the time of limitation is running regardless of the reason why there's been no accusation.

The exceptions are:
- war crimes,
- crimes against humanity,
- heavy crimes (like murder), committed by a person acting like a public servant

But I think we should consider your model.

Read the account, she was not "allowed" to be alone with him, she had a girl friend along who was supposed to act as a chaperon but Polanski sent her home saying it would be better and less distracting without her along. The parents thought she was with their daughter.

He got her drunk and tried to force qualudes onto her also, she tried to resist but was to drunk to really fight back. It was rape, pure and simple and it was obvious he planned it from the start when he sent the GF home.

He had already pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of statutory rape, and fled because he thought the (now deceased) Judge may not go along with no more jail time. A new Judge will probably honor the original plea bargain struck with the prosecutor and he’ll be back in Paris before you know it. They went easy on him 31 years ago. He was too stupid not to realize it.
