Pit bull takes down 150-pound doe

MACOMB TOWNSHIP Deputies were shocked to find the scene of what a frantic 911 caller described as a pit bull attacking a deer the morning of Sept. 24.
Responding officers couldnt believe their eyes, said Macomb County Sheriff Mark Hackel. A 50-60 pound dog had a 150-pound doe pinned to the ground in a Macomb Township neighborhood near North Avenue and Hall Road (M-59).
When one of the officers called the dog, he came. He even sat on command.
Unfortunately, the officers, after realizing the doe was suffering, had to put her down, Hackel said.
One of the officers was able to (apprehend the dog) without any injuries to himself, he said. He wasnt violent toward the officer.
At press time, the dog remained in the custody of Macomb County Animal Control, said Chief Animal Officer Sue Jeroue, who could not say whether he would be euthanized because of the attack.
At this point, its still under investigation I cant comment, she said.
Hackel said a day prior to the incident, a neighbor called to report a lose pit bull roaming around the residential area of Northbrook Road. Concerned for the well being of children nearby, she asked for police to come out, but they couldnt find the dog.
Around 10:30 a.m. Sept. 24, another caller reported a pit bull in the area killing a deer.
The neighbor was pretty upset, Hackel said.
Detectives know who the owner is and where they live, but the sheriff was unsure whether theyd actually made contact with the person responsible for watching the dog at the time of the attack.
The dog was legally licensed and tagged, but Hackel said that its possible charges would be brought, as Macomb Township has ordinances against unleashed dogs.
There may also be fines from the DNR, he added, for disturbing wild life.
When the report first came in about the attack, officers expected to find a small fawn. Commenting about pictures of the two animals, Hackel said the deer was rather large and the dog looked strong.
He wasnt sure what would happen to the dog but did say the incident proved that it could pose danger in the community.
If I lived in that neighborhood, Id be concerned too, said Hackel, who lives in the township.
He said Macomb Township does not have ordinances against residents having pit bulls as household pets.
On Sept. 9 in Clinton Township, a pit bull attacked an animal control officer when she responded to a home on reports of a dog bite. The woman was able to fight off the pit bull, but when police arrived, the dog attempted to attack an officer and was shot in the leg. The animal was later euthanized.

Out of season?
Sounds like the dog was defending its property. Considering it came when called and sat on command, I’d say it’s probably a good hound, unlike most of the ones in your other postings.
That’s a capital offense for a dog around here.
A dog took down a deer? An animal attacked another animal? Come on Chet99, the pitbull posts are getting to be a little too much.

You do realize that using dogs to hunt deer is legal in many states. I have seen a dog take down a deer. They also kill other animals. People need to realize dogs are not humans. They still have instinct to kill and eat. If we did not feed our “pets” for awhile they might just take us down. A dog is a dog.
And I thought the standard “dog bites person” stories you usually posted were repetitive. Now you’ve moved into “animal attacks animal”?
Like to see monster dog try take down a mule buck.
Here in Michigan, a dog that runs deer is unlikely to be around long enough to do it twice.
That said, you’re quite correct about the instinct. I’ve got Jack Russell terriers and you won’t find a more single minded hunter. I’ve got one sitting here staring out into the dark whining because he wants to get the woodchuck we saw about 5 hours ago.
As for neighbors being horrified that a deer was killed I can only say the people in the US are about as weak as they come.
Try not feeding a pug for 12 hours. They’ll snot on you while you sleep, and in an agressive sort of snotting way, too! /h
Good dog.
Wish I had a deer killer. My Dog tends to keep them out, which is good with deer.
I’ve been places, quite civilized places, where deer wandering near your garden take a .22 or 12 gage in the haunches...a dog that did it for you would be highly prized.
Dog trained for out of season meat locker restoration!
“Here in Michigan, a dog that runs deer is unlikely to be around long enough to do it twice.”
Why, you have something against dogs killing deer?
Yeah why?
I consider a dog that kills deer a good well trained dog!
In Michigan its illegal and a good many deer hunters will kill a dog they see chasing deer.
So ....then it is legal to shoot dogs that chase deer?
BAD DOG! LOL!
I don’t think its legal but I doubt the DNR or courts will do a whole lot unless someone raises a really big stink over it. I’ve never heard of anyone being prosecuted for shooting a dog that was running deer.
I’ve never had a dog that seemed very interested in chasing deer. I had a german shepard that might chase one a short distance then give up.
I’m not sure about Michigan but in Minnesota a dog chasing big game between January and August can be shot by anyone and the law specifically states that the shooter cannot be held liable for any damages (to the dog)
A single dog takes down a wild animal and people want to euthanize it? Poor thing was doing his job as nature intended.
If he doesn’t threaten humans, fine the owner and let the dog be.
The dog should be in his yard or leashed.
I live just a few miles north of the border between Macomb and Lapeer counties...Lots of rural area's in Macomb, lots of subs. and more than 1 mall. Dense population in most areas
#1 There are lease laws, this dog was running and the owner was not present...
#2 Its illegal to hunt with dogs in Michigan,
but #3 the deer population in the area is out of control...you cannot drive down any 2 lane cement/asphalt road in the state without seeing dead deer.
I have let me lab out the back door and had a deer take of running, she stops mid chase when I call her...On the 4 1/2 acres I own, over the years have had many dead deer on my property. I live on a Michigan 2 lane highway...Any dog that would attack a deer (unless starving) would sooner or later attach a kid.. There was no indication that this dog was starving...just not under control of owner...
Just ask any farmer what he thinks of dogs running loose and he will tell you shoot, shovel and shut up...I had one of my son's shoot one when I had a farm, it was trying to find a way into my pasture with my goats...Its legal to shoot any dog on your property in Michigan if you have hoofed animals...lots of city folk lose their pets when they move to the country cause they are really stupid people...

Sorry for the double post, I was told to do it...:O(
nature is scary!
Triple post, I am humiliated......:O(
Chet...this is not really a “Chet finds a pit bull story fit to print” hoss
I lived in deer country...plenty of other domestics kill deer they can get frequently when given the opportunity
btw...yet another thing i have in common with Pits..
taste for fresh venison...though I do cook mine first as a rule
YEP...and the owner may lose his right to hunt in the state..cannot bait them either for the last 2 years.. A dog that will run a deer will run a calf, cow or horse or goat. That kinda pisses off farmers...Cause they will run them until they drop, right in the farmers pasture....
Please provide some actual cites.
I've never heard that ... perhaps because it doesn't happen. I'm sure the poster of this thread would have posted numerous cases if this were true, since it is his reason for living.
Just because you love your animal doesn't mean others find them cute running free in the countryside....Keep them under control or someone will shoot them if they wander far enough away from dense populations...
Well, just a dumb blonde, I’ll bet there are lots of things you never heard about..
Okay, post a few links and educate me.
Like I really thought you would be able to back up your BS with any real facts or a reviewed study rather than anecdotal "stories".
Googling "stories" as factual evidence is a joke.
any farmer will tell you that any dog he finds in his pasture will soon be a dead dog.
I can tell that any farmer I find on my property will soon be a dead farmer too.
It swings both ways.
Looks like a good dog!
You just have to keep them active.
They are the best guard dogs in the world, sweet and loving to family, scarly looking, bred to tackle and hold down until the master comes to deal with the poacher. Not prone to biting.
But every moron in the world thinks it is a pitt bull.
And people who know and love the breed will stop their car in the street to give a shout out!
I had a mastiff/bully mix that was one of the most devoted, loving critters I’ve ever had the pleasure of sharing my home with. He was slow to warm to strangers, but that it not necessarily a bad thing when he is protecting the property. Couldn’t stand a skunk and would kill every one that he could find. Needless to say, I bought lemon juice by the gallon. Oddly enough, skunks were’t his gateway to attacking kids.
I hope you don’t always have a reading comprehension problem at no time did I mention a farmer going onto yours or any body else’s property to shoot a dog.. Since you don’t seem to understand simple sentences, it would be useless for me to waste time explain anything else to you.
You named yourself, and its not my job to educate you..go back to school for that or read some books and educate yourself...
Ya gotta love folks who make statements that can’t be substantiated and then get all pissy if you ask for details.
Too funny!
You misunderstood my post and it caused you to go on a rant about me not understanding yours!
Is there a language you understand better than English or should I post to you using only pictures?
Shakes head laughing at you and walks away ..........
Seems to happen a lot on wee chet’s threads.
