Arctic Ice to Last Decades Longer Than Thought?
NatGeo ^ | 9/21/2009 | Ker Than

This year's cooler-than-expected summer means the Arctic probably won't experience ice-free summers until 2030 or 2040, scientists say.

Some models had previously predicted that the Arctic could be ice free in summer by as soon as 2013, due to rising temperatures from global warming.

However, that scenario required Arctic sea ice to shrink at the record-setting pace of summer 2007, when sea ice coverage dropped to 1.6 million square miles (4.13 million square kilometers), said Walter Meier, a scientist at the U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colorado.

This summer Arctic sea ice shrank to only 1.97 square miles (5.1 million square kilometers). The 2009 drop is still the third largest on record, but it's not as big as some scientists had feared. (Explore a vanishing sea-ice interactive.)

Arctic sea ice typically shrinks in the summer and grows in the winter. It typically reaches its lowest coverage around mid-September.

One-Year Reprieve

Meier cautions the new findings do not mean the Arctic is in recovery, or that global warming is slowing down.

"I look at it as a one-year reprieve," he said. "I don't expect that to continue."

For one thing, this year's ice is thinner than in the past, and thus more vulnerable to future melt.

"If we get another really warm summer," Meier said, "we'll probably be back to where we were in 2007."

Do these scientific "experts" realize how foolish they look?

Arctic could be ice free in summer by as soon as 2013,

Bullcrap! They were predicting it could be free of ice last summer and the summer before. These idiots can't even remember what they predict. A sure sign of a liar.

We are very fortunate to see this trend. Perhaps we can get a few more folks to realize - “the IPCC report - it’s a cookbook!”

Maybe these scientists could take some hair dryers, and a very long extension cord, and go melt some of that ice so that their predictions and reality can be merged a little closer.

My thoughts exactly...so we are expected to believe their revised models now that the initial models have been proven false?

"If we get another really warm summer," Meier said, "we'll probably be back to where we were in 2007."

"If"? "probably"?

Sounds really certain, doesn't he? And Congress is relying on these "experts" in order to destroy our economy by passing Cap and Trade?

When the claim is right, take credit for the claim.

When the claim is wrong, blame the models.

Not if I can fire up the Barbeque Grill, cook some steaks, give off some CO2 and "Melt Them Babys" !!!! Woo Hoo!

Well, Arctic sea ice regularly is increasing:

Increased between 2005 - 2006.
(Decreased strongly from 2006 to 2007)
Increased between 2007 - 2008. +14%
Increased against between 2008 - 2009. +24.3% above 2007’s low.

Sea ice is now (as of Sept 21) greater than what it was in 2005. And still increasing in extent. In April and May 2009, Arctic sea ice was at the ever graphed. Yes, a record high - right at the same year that the “experts” are claiming it will disappear completely.

Antarctic sea ice is also at an all time high - Coming off of a very, very cold winter down there, trying to become spring right now, but not having much of an increase in temp's yet.

The moron scientists who believe in melting ice caps don’t seem to realize that the Ice Cap ont he south is due to the continent of Antarctica being smack dab over the south pole region, and the Northern Ice Cap is caused by the shape of the other continents breaking up the flow patters of ocean currents.

The Northern Ice cap on this planet is unstable “BECAUSE IT FORMED OVER WATER!” When South and North America came together and disrupted the flow of ocean currents, BAM! It created the ocean heat/cold flow conditions for a Northern Ice Cap.

It's what happens when science is overtaken by politics. They mindlessly extrapolate a trend from a mere blip in geological time, in this case beginning in a year (1979) when a cool period ended and a warm period began. The newest cool period began around 2005 in the Arctic (and several years earlier in the lower latitudes).

In addition, the short-term influences of the La Niña and El Niño current anomalies, as well as the natural variability of atmospheric teleconnections (PNA, NAO, AO), and solar output cycles make a total wreck of computer models based on such short-term data.

In short: it's all garbage designed to induce support for funding.

Every year they push back the ‘disaster’ another few years.

I grew up in the 70s with all the Global Cooling crap. We were supposed to be livingin igloos by now according to the articles. When that didn’t pan out, they grabbed onto Global Warming. Any proposed emergency for drama and funding.

Same thing happens with the rainforests. National Geo claimed 30 years ago the Amazon would be fully deforested by the turn of the millenium. Surprise!! But please, send more money for research!

And fools buy into this crap.

This summer Arctic sea ice shrank to only 1.97 square miles (5.1 million square kilometers).

This is as good as that infamous 1720 error in a crevo thread.

Cheers!
