Seagate First With SATA 6Gb/sec. 2 TB Drive

Seagate today started shipments of the Barracuda XT, which boasts the fastest SATA connection yet.

The Barracuda XT is a 7200 RPM 3.5-inch hard drive featuring 2 TB of storage capacity and a SATA 6 Gb/sec. interface.

"Capacity and performance remain the defining attributes of hard drives for PC gamers, digital multimedia content developers and many other customers requiring high-end systems at home and in the office," said Dave Mosley, executive vice president of Sales and Marketing at Seagate. "Seagate is meeting these requirements with the first 7200 RPM desktop hard drive to combine 2 TB of storage capacity with the fastest Serial ATA interface to date."

Of course, before you go blazing off with a SATA 6 Gb/sec. drive, you're going to need a motherboard that supports it. Right now, such boards aren't yet commonplace, but right now options include Asus' P7P55D Premium and Gigabyte's P55 series GA-P55-Extreme motherboards.

Yay! An even FASTER Seagate drive to fail more frequently than any other brand!

Give me Western Digital, or give me DEATH!

I only buy seagate HDD. They have the best return policy and great warranty coverage.

Don’t skimp and try to save $10 by buying a crappy drive with a 1 year warranty. Buy the a seagate you can’t go wrong!

How do speeds of Solid State Drives compare "normal" hard drives?

Have they fixed their buzzing, epic-fail problem that seems to happen to a good chunk of Seagate drives?

I'll wait.

Seagate drives have been terrible lately.

Seems like the only trustworthy drives anymore are Western Digital, and even THEIR 1.5 TB drive was bad (in fact ALL 1.5 TB drives had problems, so you may want to skip them).

I've got BUCKETS of blood from being on the bleeding edge. I'll wait on this one.

Wow WD is the worst for me. Seagate has been the industry leader with support.

Yep - I enjoyed that show, too but must admit I would rather watch the female version with Lindsey Wagner - what a blonde babe with a sexy voice!

One of the benefits of these big drives is that the data stored on the outer tracks is very fast, so people who only use a small amount of the storage space get a performance increase in speed.

AFAIK, Seagate has a 3 yr limited warranty. Western Digital's is 5 yrs.

Hmm..

I can count the number of WD drive's I've replaced in my 20 year PC support careeer on one hand. Seagates and Maxtors have been by the truckload. IBM (now Hitachi) used to be pretty good too, can't say for sure now.

I notice that Dell ususally replaces a failed Maxtor or Seagate with a WD.

Seagate makes very good SCSI drives though.

Oh well, I guess every person's experience is unique.

re: Give me Western Digital, or give me DEATH!

Amen! I've been buying and using hard drives since the late 70’s and the only brand I've found that goes the distance is Western Digital. At times I've had to go with other brands, but nothing lasts like WD.

I am very reluctant to go with the really big drives. The bigger the drive, the more you lose when it fails.

Worthless. It is still going to have the same access times, spindle speed etc.. as the old Sata standard. Going to 6 Gb/s is not going to somehow magically increase those. But you will be able to add more into a raid setup though before exceeding bandwidth.

It’s funny to me as well. I have had 5 WD and I have lost 5 WDs (typically 1 or 2 months after the warranty expired). One was during the warranty but I lost critical data (photos). I just put on my hawaii pics but didn’t get a backup made when the drive died.

So not only is it 5 out of 5 bad...it also brings back anger for losing my photos.

Seagate I’ve replaced 2 of them but have bought dozens. And one of those my friend fried it by jamming the connector in backwards...it was a smoking hdd when he turned on the PC. THey replaced it no questions asked.
