I am fortunate to be alive. I encourage anyone that has not had enough to continue. The time will come when alcohol will bring a person to the their knees and a sufficient psychic change will occur in order for recovery to happen.
The hardest reality to accept is that nothing will change the behavior of an alcoholic until that person reaches his own personal rock bottom. Sadly, death is the rock bottom for many.
I hope for the sake of his children, his rock bottom is before his death. Otherwise (as a disinterested observer) taking that first drink after a period of sobriety, be it one day,one year or ten, was a stupid choice. CHOICE being the operative word.
We went to many of the live tapings of the show this season. He is so sweet, nice to everybody, has enough of a sense of humor to parody himself all the time.
I was there for the taping of his singing segment. The man can actually sing. I was ready to cringe, but he was belting it out live. He didn’t like the first take, and got the bugs out on the second take and took it. It was corny but it was really him singing dead live, no lipsync.
I have grown quite fond of him this year. He is a classic people pleaser, a genuine nice guy. He loves the crowds.
I did think he was drunk for that final show — he made even less sense than usual. He’s the sweetie of the judges, the “Paula,” if you will. He is VERY nice to the fans and tries to make the contestants feel good.
I hope he finally decides to make a full break from the alcohol this time.
He is actually not a pompous jerk at all. He plays with his “stardom” a little, but he is tongue in cheek. He is not by any means a genius but he is a really nice guy. He’s the kind of guy who would probably give you the shirt off his back.
I thought he was a bit of a ham / joke until this year when I went to a lot of tapings of his show and got to see him more when the cameras are off. I really like him and hope he can get the help he needs. He is very lovable and I feel bad for his daughter.
I always wondered how much of what I saw and heard was his sense of humor. I knew some of the shlotlz bit was part of his act. Thanks for sharing your personal impressions.
W.C. Fields went into a bar and asked the bartender, "Did I spend $50 in here last night?"
"Yes, indeed you did," replied the bartender.
"Well, that's a relief," remarked Fields, "I was afraid I'd lost it."
He needs to step away from the bottle, bang some German groupie chicks, and that’ll clear it right up.
Good question. I used to work with a guy who was in his late 50’s who would drink at least a half pint every day after work. I watched him down pints like he was drinking a soda pop. This went on for years and as far as I know he still drinks like that. Never heard of him getting alcohol poisoning of having to take a trip to the ER.
“A man drink like that and he don’t eat, he is going to die!”
“When?..”
