Kim Clijsters Advances to Finals Over Serena Williams Williams looks a little somber as she begins her serve, then slaps a backhand into the net. Then she hits an ace. Balance returning. She’s got to keep the ball in play here and doesn’t, hitting another backhand into the net. Clijsters is two points from the match and the finals. She’s got to keep that out of her mind.
Williams goes up the T but misses, then foot faults. Scolding the lineswoman may help her get back her strength, but she’s down match point. Boos may also drive her back into the game. Brian Earley, the tournament manager, appears. An argument ensues. Williams is given a warning, which costs her a point. The match is over. Williams is heard to say: “I didn’t say I would kill you.” An argument on match point. Suddenly, Williams walks to the other side of the net and shakes Clijsters hand. It’s over. Has she defaulted? With Williams serving at 5-6, 15-30 in the second set, she faulted on her first serve. On the second, the line judge called a foot fault, making it a double-fault. That made the score 15-40, giving Clijsters a match point. Williams went over and said something to the line judge, who reported it to the chair umpire. That led to the chair umpire awarding a point to Clijsters, ending the match.
Williams already had been given a code violation warning when she broke her racket after losing the first set.
Well, so far, it looks like the media is going to let her get by with this. Am watching Serena’s press conference and the media is trying to make excuses for her.
Serena is making it sound like she didn’t misbehave.
Well, what a B.S. artist....regardless of the call by the lineswoman, Serena’s behavior was inappropriate; she brought this on herself, and it’s a damn shame that Kim Clijsters had to have the match end the way it did.
More players need some Jack Dempsey sportmanship and ask no quarter and make no excuses.
It is silly to berate a line judge when one can ask for a replay.
Williams was playing well and Clijsters was playing better. How many moms in the top 50??...usually one or none. Players take note: don’t let your best fertile years go by. The Mom was cool, polite, and powerful.

She brought this on herself and got what she deserved. The bottom line is she was out played.
she’s also been carrying around a big chip thinking she should be ranked #1 when she isn’t.
I’d compare Serena’s reaction to Joe Wilson’s outburst the other night, “Rude, but right” as one columnist put it. The y both breached decorum, but they both had darn, a good reason for doing it.
The foot fault call was one of the worst calls in the history of sports. Foot faults are almost never called, and the replay showed it was not even close to a foot fault. If you are going to make that call, in that spot, you’d better be 100% sure.
Do any other sports allow officials who wear glasses?

What an ass. Thank goodness she lost. She doesn't deserve to win. Then she gets her face right away in front of the media to try and salvage her rep. Like Mary Carillo just said...S. Williams could have won an Oscar for her performance in the press conference. I hope this ends her tennis career; she doesn't deserve to play in the pros again.
And this is a “businesswoman” who is now part-owner of the Miami Dolphins. How classy. Her agent had better get an apology printed by morning, since obviously Queen Serena doesn’t see the need for one. And the poor line judge is probably done for the tournament, for security reasons I would not want her back out there.

Gee, I can’t for the life of me figure why self-hating white liberals in the media would be making excuses for the abominable, classless, threatening behavior of Williams.

It won’t end her tennis career - can you imagine the outrage if, say, a white male player had said that to a black line judge? Double standard very likely to go in play in 3, 2, 1...
Just watched another replay on CBS. There is no mistaking that Serena told the line judge that she was going to shove the tennis ball up the judge’s “effing a**” and maybe down her “effing throat” a moment later. Dick Enberg even commented that CBS’s “sensitive microphones” picked up “Serena’s profanities” after her foot fault.
I suppose the media will be all over this tomorrow and will be covering for her.
Just now, Enberg, John McEnroe and the woman (can’t think of her name but she is a fixture at tennis matches) just commented on Serena’s outburst. McEnroe clearly was uncomfortable and said so especially since Serena had said in her press conference that McEnroe and Navrilatova were her idols. Mac folded his arms over his chest in a very defensive posture as he commented that Serena’s behavior was indefensible as was his incident many years ago. (good for MacEnroe for saying this). The woman then said Serena deserved an Oscar for her performance at the press conference. Riveting TV for a change.
The only reason I saw any of this was because the SEC football games had finished!
Serena was a total embarrassment to herself, tennis and America.
That’s not the only big thing she’s carrying!!!

IMO we would need a baseline view - I agree from behind it didn’t look suspicious, but Mac shouldn’t have said it wasn’t a foot fault. Serena needs to reflect on what happened after that.

A hot-headed Serena Williams’ temper got the best of her as she lost her U.S. Open semi-final in stunning fashion Saturday night.
As a result, Kim Clijsters moved on to the finals Sunday.
The incredibly boorish behavior by Williams took away from a superb performance by Clijsters, who outplayed Williams much of the match.
Williams’ problems started in the first set, when she angrily slammed her racket onto the court and broke it as she lost 6-4.
That was her first code warning.
Then, down 6-5 in the second set, and with Clijsters needing just two points for the victory, Williams was called for a foot-fault on her second serve.
Williams exploded, moved in menacing fashion toward the line judge who had made the call, with her racket extended. Williams reportedly yelled obscenities at the female judge.
The foot fault put Williams at match point.
But suddenly, her abusive behavior toward the line judge became Williams’ second code warning of the night.
And, just like that — with the lost point being match point — Williams had lost the semifinal and Clijsters had won.
McEnroe was a big cry baby, always arguing about calls.
it’s very hard to say...and I wonder how many people really watch for foot faults since it happens so rarely. And how can Mac see from way up there in the birds nest...LOL
New Yorkers don’t take kindly to these types of antics. They will remember next year.

Yes, he was. I think now that although he acknowledges his earlier behavior during his playing days, he would prefer that it go away. William’s behavior tonight brought MacEnroes’ and Ilie Nastase’s behavior to the fore, once again.
There was another foot fault earlier in the match.
She started with, “I swear to God, I will take this racket and shove it up your f#@&ing a$$.” Then it was one profanity after the other and the bleeping made it impossible to hear the rest. Why didn’t she just shut up and challenge the foot fault call?
Well, I believe Yael T. Abouhalkah, who wrote that column, could have left the “reportedly” out of his phrase “reportedly yelled obscenities”.
It’s one thing to argue, whine about a call, but to take a ball, with your racquet, yelling at the lineswoman, saying you going to take the F’ing ball and shove it down her F’ing throat....now that’s a big difference; and it was her use of profanity—the obsenities she used—a string of them...that got her the point penalty (combined with her earlier smashing of a racquet). Game over man!
Yeah, it’s only where the ball lands. Which apparently was about to be up the line judge’s ^$#!

Hmmm, could be right. But they can challenge service calls, and a foot fault is the outcome of a serve.
