Two potentially key genes linked to the development of Alzheimer's disease have been uncovered by UK researchers.
It is the first gene clue to the condition in 16 years and has prompted scientists to rethink their theories on how the disease develops.
The genes were pinpointed in a study of 16,000 DNA samples and are known to be implicated in inflammation and cholesterol breakdown.
It is hoped the Nature Genetics study will open the way for new treatments.

This is one area that we should be spending billions and are not....
that basket reminds me....when Easter egg hunting you can find the ones you hid.

How ironic the discovery was made in a country where people will never be able to take advantage of it because the their socialist health care system.
Who's the "we" in that sentence?

“The federal government now spends about $640 million a year on Alzheimer’s research.”

A guy walks into a doctor’s office. The doctor says, “Sir, I’m afraid I have some bad news. #1) you have cancer and #2) you have Alzheimer’s.” The guy replies, “Alzheimer’s, eh? Well, at least I don’t have cancer!”
Right. Just think of the progress that would have been made on curing this insidious disease had the money spent on AIDS been spent on Alzheimers!
“Alzheimer’s genes link uncovered”?
Well, I guess that makes sense. Seems like someone forgot where they left them.
When my mother first started showing signs of dementia, they asked her who the president of the US was.
Her reply: “I don’t remember but I sure do like his wife, Mrs. Bush.”

Ping for you.
So the “we” is the federal government. Got it.
The Long Goodby .....One daddy and I know all too well....We went through our goodby with both Ronnie and mom at the same time. Dad will be ninety in January and just finished reading a dozen books in July and Aug.. He’s been following the Tea Party express, so I went to Louisville yesterday and got him a t-shirt, book and a couple of bumper stickers....I am so blessed.
If only there was a way to prevent AIDS. . .Oh wait, never mind.
Of course, if this topic *has* been posted, we might not notice...
Alzheimers works in strange ways. Sufferers (as we learned during Mom's fading days) can often mentally obliterate pain --- all of which adds to the mysteries.
It all sucks - solace that she's resting now with Dad, her hubby of 67 years who predeceased her by 18 months to the day. They didn't have to wait too awfully long to be together again.
Anyhow == re the Alzheimers postage stamp....I stumbled across this issue about the time she died on February 27, and ran and bought a few dozen --- used 'em on the "thanks" cards for the florals, etc. The postage may have made a few recipients uncomfortable, but wifey and I felt it was appropriate.
So similar to my late Mom's situation. There's some sort of connected disconnect thing going on.
Last year, during neurologist "mini-mental" exams, she'd be asked who was the prez......her answers would vary........but last summer she was asked who was running against Bush she'd say "That damned Clinton-woman"
