Sorry to clog the board with a vanity but I have a problem. It is an extra older machine running Windows 2000 Professional. Our office had power problems and I did not have it on a power backup and it lost power.
Userint.exe Uable to local DLL
MSVYKJ.DLL could not be found in specified path witha long c drive path.
I am not a tech. I tried to boot in safe mode but still no go. It is a P4 2.0 which is still okay but maybe I should junk it and make the drive and external and hopefully a new machine can access some of the files I may need.
I do have a Windows Pro 2000 diskette but i have to look to see if I have any ROMs. I know a tech but I am not crazy about dropping more than $100 to fix it. Thanks to all.
Did you try booting in safe mode?
Google your thread title, a number of items come up
I tried but it did not seem to help. This is about the level of my expertise. I can instalkl RAM and put an old drive in an external drive but I am pretty limited.
Try a bootable CD (e.g. Knoppix) with file/drive fixing software.
Don’t take it to Best Buy whatever you do.
I just searched my computer with Windows 2000.
It boots and runs fine.
It did not show that it has MSVYKJ.DLL anywhere.
Running a machine as old as yours with very old and insecure software is dangerous.
Do yourself a big favor and save a lot of headaches, get a new box. They're dirt cheap right now!
I looked this up for you. Try this website.

Buy a MAC. All problems solved. Just wish all were that easy!!
1. Insert the original Windows XP CD (Windows XP with a Service Pack is preferred, but not required) and reboot the computer. You may need to configure your computer to boot from the CD-ROM drive.
2. When the Windows XP Setup has started, press “R” to “repair the Windows XP installation using Recovery Console”.
3. Select the Windows installation to repair (generally this is C:\Windows) by typing its number and then pressing ENTER.
4. Type the Administrator password and press ENTER.
5. Type the following commands:
D: [ENTER]
CD I386 [ENTER]
EXPAND USERINIT.EX_ C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 [ENTER]
NOTE: If your CD-ROM drive has a different letter assigned to it, enter “X:” instead, where X is the appropriate drive letter.
After entering “EXPAND USERINIT.EX_ C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32” you should see the text “1 file(s) copied”, in which case all went well.
Note that there is a space between EX_ and C:
Remove the Windows XP CD, type “EXIT” and press ENTER to restart your computer. You should now be able to log on as normally.
Except it’s a Windows 2000 machine, not an XP machine.
LOL! Yeah, that’s why Apple doesn’t have any repair shops.
Sounds like your PC may have experienced some file corruption as a result of the power outage. Might need to have a tech look at the computer, it will not improve on its own.
Help
Use the Windows XP SFC command to have windows scan and repair files; to run this command, follow the below steps. Additional information about the SFC command can be found on our SFC command page.
Once the above steps have been completed, Windows will verify that all protected windows files are intact.
“Most computer and IT professionals are far left wingnuts, and are afraid of God-fearing Americans.”
That has not been my experience outside of the government space. There are a lot of Conservatives in the IT professional world especially among those who are highly analytic. I’d wager the company I work for has a majority of conservatives. Every project I’ve worked on has been almost exclusively conservative or conservative leaning. I was surprised after working in the government space where I did feel somewhat outnumbered but even then I wasn’t alone.
A lot of young IT professionals are apolitical. They are more interested in spending their money, many have very big salaries in comparison to their peers. The problem with being apolitical is that it almost always favors Democrats because people who are apolitical tend to parrot the Media.
I have that same problem in IE. However, it runs with no problems in Firefox.
I love my Knoppix. What kind of fixing software can you recommend while running Knoppix? I don’t fool with Linux anywhere near like I used to.
I am glad I can fix my own gear. The yo-yos I see in Beast Buy do not impress me. I would work at my local one since it is so close. My time there would probably be brief since I am not a ripoff artist. One time a BB manager got a hold of my resume and called me up. I told him I would be interested in a tech job. He was like a broken record saying he wanted was customer service.
I dont understand why I’ve been able to upload many pictures
to several folders, but just this past week it wouldn’t let
me get there. Not even the easy upload option.
Double check your spelling of the
actual error message
Are you sure it really is - MSVYKJ.DLL
Thanks. I cannot get Windows to boot after keying in my login/password in Windows.
How do I boot to a DOS command? I guess if I get to DOS I can type sfc/scannow
Thanks
I think it is pressing the F8 as the computer boots.
If not, try the ESC or DELETE key during boot up.
That should get you to the start options menu. The menu should have a DOS option.
Thanks.
He may have come to the right place but you didn't, troll. You need to work on the vernacular - conservatives don't usually use the term "God-fearing Americans" in this context, "wingnuts" is a locution more typical to liberal boards, and in any case a fairly high percentage of FReepers are, in fact, IT professionals, starting with one Jim Robinson.
And so you're outed, spamboy. It was just that easy. Have a nice day.
Hey, while we have a computer thread, what do folks recommend for home budgeting and financial record keeping? Money? Quicken? Or what? Thanks.
I gave up on Quicken when it became glutware.
Now, I use a more basic ‘freeware’ program called Money Manager Ex.

THAT is sick... :p
Not XP... Win 2000 Pro..

Thanks, I just downloaded FireFox on my backup box.
I’ll see if the problem is solved.
Thanks a lot.

Good point.. All I hear over hear (for the last year and a half.. the only English I hear) is, “Yes We Can!” ... wanna puke now :/
This includes GE and their companies plus Disney/ABC and others.
Thanks. Tried it but I need Windows 2000 Pro ROM and cannot find it. I bought multiple copies years ago and did not throw them out as far as I know. I will keep looking.
I can access everything through Task Manager by Browse but my desktop is gone.
I wonder if that free Linux utility will work? I wonder if there is any freeware. I have to keep looking for a 2000 ROM I may have.
Usually F8... sometimes F4 (older systems...)... ESC (for many laptops) and DEL (for most desktops) puts you in BIOS/CMOS settings.. wouldn’t help in that case :(
Ok.. I have been holding back hoping that someone else could help you out... I don’t have much experience with Win2000... but the simplest solution was mentioned earlier (the only mistake was of mentioning XP instead of 2000... but it’s still the same). If you can get the 2000 installation disk, put it in and boot from it. while it is booting (even on P4s) it should give you the option to boot from the CD/DVD. Take the boot from CD/DVD option and it should give you further options (like I said.. my memory on 2000 is very vague... was about 8 years ago last time I used it)..
It should start loading drivers and such.. just wait for the options to show up.
One of the options should be to repair the system files (may ask for an admin password.. just hit ENTER).
The original disk SHOULD then check and compare the files on the boot hard drive and replace any files it deams corrupt.
2 things though...
1: You will have to reinstall any and all updated drivers (and necessary applications... they will still be on the HD, but the system, more or less, resets everything.)
2: If/when you get to the control prompt (DOS prompt), it probably will not give you access to or recognize all drives (for example, the CD/DVD drive)... or it will, but it will not have the same drive path you are used to (unless you have 1 HD and 1 CD/DVD... C:/D: respectively)
I really wish I could help you further, but I can’t remember the exact logon for 2000. IF you have, or able to upgrade to, at least 1 gig of RAM on the P4... you should definitely get the latest BETA of Win7 and install it. It has the most drivers available of ANY Winblows system and installs in less than 15 minutes (for me anyway..).
Thanks. Trying to find the Windows 2000 Pro CD ROM. I can get things working but the desktop is lost.
It is a P4 with 1 Gig of RAM. Should I go to MSFT and install the Wiundows 7 Beta? Will it fix the dlls? Will it die at some point as it is a beta? Thanks.
This was originally Netscape... but Netscape fell and Mozilla took over. My first internet browser WAS Netscape (1995?!) |
Yes to both... I am a BETA tester of the new Win7... and it has never been easier to install a Operating System on a Win machine... being a P4, it may take longer than a newer system.. but the drivers are all pretty much there. This is the first OS I have installed that DIDN't give me driver problems. (but you need probably a HD larger than 4 gig.. :/) OH.. 1 more thing... if you install a OS, but you still have files you need or want on your previous system, you need to use your back up 'box' to store them on. The best installation is always a FRESH installation. (of course, you can't upgrade 2000 to Win7.. but the same rule applies). |
You are most welcome. I run both. Somethings I like in IE better and ditto for Firefox.
I miss the simple days of Netscape.. and no “script kiddies” :p
BTW, if you are able to find the original Win2000 Pro CD and do a repair... make sure you have all of the drivers handy (motherboard, HD, audio, video, net, monitor, CD/DVD, and I am sure there are more.. those were off the top of my head for a P4...
I build my own systems and haven’t “bought” a PC for the last 15 years.. was cheaper back then to build your own (by about 15-25% of the cost of a store bought unit))..
