Feuding families cause riot of about 150 in Ala

MARION, Ala. – Two Alabama families that had been fighting for years turned their feud into a full-scale riot Monday outside a small-town city hall, with up to 150 screaming people hurling tire irons and wielding baseball bats. Eight people were arrested, and at least four were hurt, Trooper John Reese said. Two were taken to hospitals. The town's police chief was hit in the head with a crowbar but was OK.

The two- or three-year-old feud apparently prompted a fight earlier in the day at a high school, after a window was shot out of a home Sunday night. Then, "all hell broke loose" later in the day, said Sgt. Carlton Hogue of the Perry County Sheriff's Department.

"It was a full-scale riot is what it was," said Tony Long, mayor of the town of 3,300 about 85 miles west of Montgomery.

Hogue said the rioters were "throwing jack irons, throwing tire irons, anything they could get their hands on." Some people carried baseball bats and brooms.

Statement issued from the President’s Office: You may have heard news of an altercation at the Marion City Hall this morning... We have discussed the potential threat to the campus with state and local law enforcement and have been assured of the safety of our students.

The altercation involved two families from the community who became violent after the detention of two family members. A protest erupted at City Hall. Area law enforcement were immediately called and brought the situation under control.

The administration is satisfied that there is no threat to the students and employees of the College. We have asked the students to refrain from visiting the downtown area for 24 hours.

I was just using the picture ( The Hatfields ) as a example of American folklore of feuding families in the news story of the 2 feuding families in Alabama.
Whether the folklore is true or not about the Hatfields and the McCoys is for historians to work out.

I’m with you April. Let me just say that family fueds of the type described here — and the “Hatfields & McCoys” of historic infamy — went out DECADES ago down in the South. With a few exceptions, all us “bumpkins, “rednecks” and “hillbilly’s” are pretty well behaved now, at least by comparison. So, y’all Yankee folks poke fun at “us-uns.” But I don’t think it was our “brand” that started that riot. Sounds more like an urban affair to me....
