Protests planned for Hawaii's 50th anniversary

HONOLULU – Protesters will march the streets and Hawaiian chants will echo from the sprawling lawn of Iolani Palace on Hawaii's 50th anniversary of statehood, as high-minded panelists ponder the islands' future at a daylong conference.

(snip)

About 1,000 demonstrators who would rather see Hawaii's independence restored are expected to rally outside the conference at the Hawaii Convention Center.

"We want to show how U.S. imperialism has spread across the Pacific and across the world," said Lynette Cruz, an organizer of the Hawaiian Independence Action Alliance. "It'll be fun."

I've never been to Hawaii as I prefer a museum to a beach. Regardless if the people of Hawaii want independence they should have it. It does not sound like the majority do though.

I agree.

Let them have their independence!

That should help REDUCE our debt with them gone from the union.

Someday we’ll have a president who was born in Hawaii.

Hawaii is not only a wonderful place to visit ( in some ways a museum in place -— ) but it has some wonderful museums as well. If you have never been it is hard to explain the place but I love it and have for over 40 years.

The attitude that says we ought to return all states to the original status will inevitably lead to another civil war. While the states have rights they are also part of a union. Wasn’t one enough?

It’ll be fun? HUH? What’s this person smoking?

I say if they want to be off on their own, fine. I think you’re right, though...most of the people don’t want to go. But maybe pineapples and Kona coffee will come down in price. That would be a good thing.

All I ask is they give up 0bama’s birth certificate before they go. HA!

The dirty little secret in Hawaii is that the current Hawaiians displaced the indigenous Menehune, by slavery and slaughter.

Another dirty little secret about old Hawaiian culture was the rigid caste system, and that only the “Ali’i” were allowed to surf!

Hawaii is the “loveliest chain of islands in the Pacific.” It really is an incredible place, words cannot describe.

Hawaii is beautiful but if they want independence, let em have it. You can visit as a tourist whether they are part of the U.S. or not. Perhaps if they are not part of the U.S., they’ll be even nicer to you, to support themselves since they would be cut off from all the government programs that fund them.

Vote June 27, 1959: Shall Hawaii immediately be admitted into the Union as a state?

Yes 132,773

No 7,971

Looks likes the proposition passed.

I know what they are up to. Hawaii demands their independance and mugabe gives it to them via executive order. Hawaii will become the republic of hawaii with no extradition to the USA. mugube flees to hawaii to be with his “birth certificate” and can’t be touched.

I don't think Cruz is a Hawaiian name. So here we have a non-native telling the rest of us to get out.

"Tropical paradise for me, but not for thee..." Typical liberalism.

Hawaii received $15 billion in federal spending last year, # 6 highest in the nation on a per capita basis.

I’m sure some other state would be more than happy to take that 15b.

“Someday we’ll have a president who was born in Hawaii.”

I’d be willing to make a deal with them

Unseal the Kenyan's birth certificate, for all to scruitinize, and we’ll set you free! They can then be on their own and help reduce future U.S. debt.

At one point in time, Todd Palin apparently supported a party that preached secession of Alaska from the Union. That was considered sinister by the anti-Palin crowd. Now, a group of folks want Hawaii to say bye bye to America, and they claim they’re having ‘fun’. I love hypocrisy when it’s so darn obvious...

1959 7,971 no votes. Now they expect ~1,000 protesters. It seems to be that, even before you factor in population growth, they’re losing ground.

This is why I just do not get those FALN terrorists from Puerto Rico. I have never met an American who would not grant Puerto Rico it’s independence if they asked, but everytime it is on the ballot the people there vote it down. (welfare checks more compelling than having a country, I guess...)

And well worth the trip. My first trip to Pearl and The Arizona still leaves me with goose bumps. The presentations they do on the tour of the habor should leave everyone in awe and stunned silence. Words cannot describe the gratitude I have for those who lost their lives that day and for all those who served making sure that the US won that war.

Well, that’s what some people called the indigenous to Hawaii.

“Menehune” appeared in census’ taken in Hawaii in the early to mid 1800’s.

Once again the news sways reality: 1000 protesters against a backdrop of 50th anniversary celebrations. Do you think that we will hear a positive spin about the happenings in Honolulu today? Unless you live here in the islands, most will be treated to the usual negatives. As for independence, these islands would have eventually been conquered by someone. Can’t imagine independence though. Independence from what? If one wants to live the days of the Ali’i, there are plenty of remote spots to settle. For the rest living here, we are treated to Federal funds, diversity and Heineken. Life is good. Aloha! God Bless Hawai’i and America.

Oh yes we do!

UNITED STATES without Hawaii!

The other states will be UNITED.

I’d like to see Mass. and Calif. remove themselves from the U.S.. I have NO problem with states leaving the union. All those states do is vote for socialists and drag decent states DOWN.

True but I’d bet she is Hispanic because it is a common Hispanic last name. California made the mistake of keeping many Hispanic town and city names - such as Santa Cruz ... .

Obviously you are not a “conservative”.

It is “silly” for Hawaii to want to become independent but if liberals want ot be “silly”, I say, be independent. As a conservative, I don’t want to enslave them to the United States. Let them have their freedom FROM THE U.S.. Yes, LIBERALS are silly and insane at the same time.
