The Street ^ | 8-17-09 | Matt Horween

We already have a structural trade deficit with most countries of the world and we are spending money outside the U.S. at an alarming rate on two active wars and countless military installations worldwide as well as an expanding foreign aid program. All of this while we and other countries like Spain are in a jobs depression. We are still losing more than 300,000 jobs a month, and Challenger/Grey said recently that layoffs would get worse in the months ahead going into year-end.

Think maybe the government is just too big and is suffocating our economic capability? I sure do.

It got so big back in the 70s that our economy reached the breaking point and couldn’t survive price shocks of any kind. Back then the Dims tried to deal with it with even more government, like they are doing now, and we ended up in a double-dip. Ouch!

Michelle Obama is doing her part in creating new worthless government jobs. I wonder if she has hired an official dinner table “mouth wiper” yet.

We have over 200 homes and businesses that suffered roof and siding damage from a Severe Hail Storm June 30th.

I can't find ONE roofing contractor doing a job that doesn't have predominately Hispanics on the roof tops.

My point is I am wondering how many of our OWN US Citizens are losing out on a job because we allow Illegals to be employed for less than American workers?

Yes, I assume most of them are Illegal. Go figure..

We need about 218 Reagans in the House and 51 in the Senate and one in the WH. Don’t ask me how thats going to happen unless we all start voting other FReepers into power.

many moons ago I used to roof...even here in MN, most of the big roofing companies used sub, sub, sub contractors (IE: all mexican labor of questionable background)

kinda of like “ASE certifed mechanic” on a car repair joint’s window just means there’s one on staff there, not necessarily working on your car.

If the "stimulus" money were actually to stimulate the economy enough that businesses wouldn't have to let people go, those people could continue to afford health insurance. That would ruin the gubbmint's plan for a takeover. The way it is now, the jobs are increasing only in the number of government "workers" who are more than happy to give up freedom for "free" health insurance coverage. Sheepdips.

A nation of truly employed people wouldn't have to depend on government for other things besides healthcare. They could buy cars without bribes and homes without Fannie & Freddie's interference. Bailout? Baloney! It all went to Zero's cronies!

Geeze, can I please get a break from all these big fricken government hacks?

Redirect all the savings from foreign aid cutbacks into physical infrastructure in the U.S. and college scholarships for American citizens.

Ahh, yes, the put government back to work idea. I want the federal government out of my school, not more pathways for the feds to get involved at the college level, and please, not one dime of college scholarship money creates a job, ever. Just more big government gimmes, ugh...

We can reduce our balance of trade and current account deficits by huge amounts if we convert all of our vehicles to an interim and abundant fuel that we have right here in the U.S.: natural gas.

Yeah, gosh, we don't import natural gas at all.. The supplies are never limited, nope... For Pete's sake, advocate for easing of laws that prevent drilling and exploring in the US, for all natural resources - that'd create jobs. Requiring conversion of all our cars to a less efficient power source will just be yet another drain on the economy, and ultimately a job killer - this bozo writes for The Street?

Install solar electric panels on every roof in the U.S.

Ooh, we're in economic hard times, let's make it easier on the devastated housing market and require yet another extra beanie to be put on new homes. You can NOT regulate your way out of a recession, but you certainly can DEregulate your way out of it. I like that you support nuclear power, but this solar panel idea is just moronic pipe dreaming.

Geeze, now you're into liberal pipe-dreaming - OOh, let's REBUILD America's infrastructure, err, while we tear down our hydroelectric dams and tax the heck out of everyone in the name of fairness and equality. I'm not taking your pie, I'm giving pie to me...

In closing, I want to say that all of the above is possible. The plan will result in better air quality and tens of millions of new good jobs that will last for several generations.

Can I have the ten minutes of my life back, please? Oh, heck, it was slightly entertaining. I grew up in Los Angeles, I remember, back in the 1970's, what the summers were like, the green haze that hung over the city. Just like every other whacked out enviroweenie, you have completely and utterly lost your ability to say: We did it, we succeeded, we've done what we set out to do. The air quality is fantastic compared to what it used to be, and a fair bit better than anywhere else in the world for the populating density we have in the Los Angeles area.

So, nuts to your 'dream jobs creators' that it wouldn't surprise me to see coming from Pelosi's lips in the coming days, because what you propose does nothing to create jobs, just destroys the economy even further.. Hey, wait, you're not one of those short investors looking to tank the market for your own financial gain, are ya?

correct. the only thing gubermint involvement with student loans has done is increase the cost for college.

they go up more than double the cost of inflation every year...yet nobody hauls the presidents of colleges in front of Congress.

How about how college president's salaries have gone up even faster than the price of colleges? Oh, that's right, they gotta cut back, raise the price of tuitions, because they're out of money...
